US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Project page categories

I replaced two red-linked cats with their new names on the project page. The cat names had been changed per discussion here and here. It's a minor tweak but I see red whenever I see...uh, red. Carol M. Highsmith's America

A large (3948 image) archive of photographs of Alabama has been donated, without restriction (i.e. in the public domain), to the Library of Congress. The photographs were taken by Carol M. Highsmith in the Spring of 2010 all over the state, including many sites and events of cultural interest. Some have been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons already (see Commons Category:Photographs by Carol M. Highsmith). The rest of the "George F. Landegger Collection of Alabama Photographs in Carol M. List of colleges and universities in Alabama for FL

Hi folks. I'm preparing to nominate List of colleges and universities in Alabama for Featured List status. I'd appreciate any comments or suggestions anyone has. Do you think it would be good to go through an official peer review? Looks good to me. I would find some sources for the ending statements in the lede paragraphs though. I know that will be an issue for some people. The red-links may be an issue, I've seen it become a big one on some nominations and a non-issue on others.
I asked for a peer review for the NHL's in Alabama list and found it helpful. I also had one done prior to having the GA assessment on the Mobile article. Raime and I did not request one for the tallest buildings in Mobile list though and everything went smoothly. The only negative is that a peer review can sometimes take a while, but if you're not impatient like me...

Proposal to add WikiProject Alabama under WikiProject United States

Greetings, I am a member of WikiProject United States, it was recently suggested that WikiProject Alabama might be inactive or semi active and it might be beneficial to include it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States, which Kumioko and me have added some of the projects like WikiProject American television and WikiProject United States Government under the {{WikiProject United States}} banner. After reviewing the project it appears that there have not been any active discussion on the talk page in some time and the only content updates appear to be simple maintenance so being supported by a larger project might be beneficial. This discussion is intended to start the process of determining if the project members are interested in the project being added to the projects supported by WikiProject United States. We may only have about six or so active members at this time, but I prefer that the project remain stand alone since this is the specific subject area that we contribute to and attempt to improve. I personally see no benefit in having the project supported by WikiProject United States. It looks to me like the other state projects have been somewhat absorbed into the larger project (such as article talk pages using the WikiProject United States template instead of their own), so what would the benefit be? Make that three against. I dabble in South Carolina articles and didn't notice a huge swell of activity when that project was merged. The only real difference I can see is a new banner and confusion over which talk page should be used. We do appreciate any support in improving articles. Wikipedia:Village pump (miscellaneous)#Otciapofa

A New Page Patroller has asked for help with Otciapofa, currently an unsourced fragment: "Otciapofa are a Muscogee tribe." My Googling leads me to believe that "Otciapofa" and other transliterations are the Muscogee name for Hickory Ground, which is on the National Register of Historic Places listings in Elmore County, Alabama. Can anyone verify this properly and hopefully rewrite the article to better reflect this as a place of importance to both the Muscogee and Alabama? Fences&Windows 23:58, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Although you are correct, that Otciapofa seems to have been a native name for Hickory Ground, it seems to be more complex than is first apparent. The Alabama Indian Affairs Commission, states that the Otciapofa are also a tribe, once part of the Creek (Muscogee) Confederacy in the state. It may be best to use this article to address the tribe and another to separately address the former town site, which was occupied by the Otciapofa. Altairisfar (talk) 13:28, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

Link to incorrect Ricky Ray on the Birmingham Stallions page

The article on Birmingham Stallions mentions that in 1984, cornerback Ricky Ray was signed. However, when you click on the link over Ricky Ray's name, it takes you to a page of another Ricky Ray, born in 1979, so he would be age 5 at the time of signing with the Stallions. Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

Toni Tennille

Hi,

I was wondering if somebody from WikiProjectAlabama could take a look at Toni Tennille. I've made a few suggestions for improving the article on its talk page (here, here and here, but have yet to get any feedback. Personally, I think the page layout is poor and should be reorganized. It seems that people are just adding sections without considering the overall layout of the article. Since it is subject to WP:BLP and is listed as an "article of interest" to your project, I thought I'd ask for feedback here as well. Overrated article

I have commented on Chickamauga Wars (1776-1794), the subject of a proposed move. In 2007 WikiProject Alabama gave the article a B rating. I believe that should be reconsidered. I would give the article a "Start" class rating. Areas of concern include WP:OR, WP:OWN, and WP:UNDUE. Also, the article is unfocused because of a tendency to narrate tangentially related topics rather than using wikilinks, a symptom of WP:OWN. The source list that impressed prior reviewers consists mostly of out-of-date material. Even works with recent publication dates are reprints of 19th-century books.

Having weighed in on the move proposal, I am reluctant to simply assess the article myself. If my case makes sense, I hope another WikiProject member will take a moment to do the assessment. (I've also placed a request with a link to this thread.) — ℜob C. alias ALAROB 14:27, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

Leaflet For Wikiproject Alabama At Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. Yes, it's a notable place with plenty of coverage in reliable secondary sources. There's no deadline with Wikipedia so fixing it or leaving it alone is almost always better than deletion. (I would oppose deletion in this specific case.) - Dravecky (talk) 08:03, 24 November 2014 (UTC)

Help with Alabama article

Hi there. I'm currently working on updating List of cities and towns in Alabama to have more information, images, and a better lead with the goal of bringing it up to featured status like List of cities and towns in California. I have brought 8 such lists to featured status in the past, and hope to see Alabama there as well. I'm wondering if anybody has some free time, I need help populating the "city or town" column, the 2000 population column, and the % growth column. If there are any GIS wizards out there, Alabama could also use a simple map that shows what areas are incorporated, and which are not. Thanks for your help. Suggestion

Hello all! I was curious if anyone else thought it might be a good idea to make a (nonbinding) guideline on how all the individual US state WikiProjects should organize themselves, to help standardize them. I originally put this suggestion in the WikiProject United States talk page, so feel free to look there if you're interested. It's pretty empty though; basically all they said was to see what each of the individual projects thought about it. Please tell me if you have any concerns with this idea; hopefully we can find a way for everyone to love it! US 50,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject United States/The 50,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more states than they might otherwise work on.
