Algeria-related articles needing geographical coordinates

Based on a search of Wikipedia's articles related to Algeria, I've found some articles that I believe are about places in Algeria, and could usefully have geographical coordinates added.

The articles in question are listed in Category:Algeria articles missing geocoordinate data. At the time of writing, some examples included:

...and there are many more, as well. At the time of posting this notice, there were 464 articles in this category needing geographical coordinates.

Why add coordinates?

By adding coordinates, a Wikipedia reader can easily view the location on a street map, nautical chart, topographic map, by satellite photo, realtime weather map, and in many other ways. Coordinate data makes an article eventually appear in various services such as Google Maps' Wikipedia overlay, Google Earth, and Wikipedia's own internal map service. Coordinate data also helps readers looking for geographically-based data, such as locations near a reference point, or related information.

How can I do it?

The articles are all marked with {{coord missing}} tags, which need to be replaced with {{coord}} tags that contain the location's latitude/longitude coordinates; or you might be able to add coordinates to an existing infobox. You can find out how to do this at the Wikipedia:Geocoding how-to for WikiProject members. Houari Boumediene

Listing French name in lead in Algeria article

A user argues that the French name Algérie should be excluded from the Algeria article since French is a "foreign" language in Algeria. I argue that French, despite not being official, is significant in Algerian society and has been used in a de facto manner by the current Algerian government, despite Arabization attempts to remove French. I can't think of many examples where a language is widely spoken at a national level without being official. It would be a good idea to find other cases like this and decide accordingly. The situation in Tunisia and Morocco is similar, and in both cases the French names are used in the lead section, but that's not much of a precedent. If I were to base my decision only on those two, I would say it should be included in the Algeria article, too.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 19:18, 15 March 2013 (UTC)

yes i think that the french is a foreign language in Algeria, but in some cases is Very useful for example: إقلي or إجلي or إكلي We can not identify the proper pronunciation only through the french writing (Igli), I think that in this case what applies to the arab language applies to English. for this, I propose the deletion except in cases similar to the previous example Trabelsiismail (talk) 22:56, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

Even though the Algerian government doesn't declare French as an official language it also uses it in many UN meetings; as I wrote in the Languages of Algeria article: "Of the documents submitted by the Algerian government to the sessions of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names and the United Nations Conferences on the Standardization of Geographical Names were in French, and the government used French in its participation in almost all of the conferences associated with these groups." Another thing is that there are two elements of Algerian society - More westernized and bilingual people are in favor of bilingualism in Arabic and French while the Islamists and Arabists are in favor of Arabic monolingualism, so there is a political undercurrent to this debate. I do not think you understand the subject well, French language used because there is a third language (Tamazight) we not talking about it.

Arabic language written, with cultural and geographical extension.
Amazigh language is not written and in disappearing.

During the reign of Liamine Zéroual there have been attempts to Arabize administration and university studies but the political circumstances and the attempt to create chaos in the Kabylie by some quarters prompted the government to reverse its decisions and the use of French as an intermediate language. This does not mean adoption as an official language and that's what Algeria explained through withdrawal from the membership of the Francophonie a few years later Trabelsiismail (talk) 08:34, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

I am aware that the Algerian government doesn't declare French as official but despite that it uses French anyway (de facto means in reality). Do you have references that support the details about French being preserved in order to placate Kabylie? WhisperToMe (talk) 13:13, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

Came to page via Wikiproject:Africa talk page, so not Algeria specific interests. My reading of WP:NCGN does not seem to say that only official names can go in the first sentence (it specifically says "Relevant foreign language names (one used by at least 10% of sources in the English language or is used by a group of people which used to inhabit this geographical place) are permitted"). The question being discussed above about whether French is a foreign language seems unimportant to me, the question is whether it is useful to add for the reader on English wikipedia. Luckily, professional encyclopedia editors have already answered the question for us. See Brittanica here for Algiers, where they clearly give the Arabic and French names, following the English name. We don't have to follow this convention, but when our focus is on readability rather than some fuzzy idea of what a "foreign language" is, I think including French becomes fully justified. I never said that french take the place of the Tamazight language, I mean that the government used french for administrative transactions instead of Arabic, Because there are some parties tried to exploit the multi-ethnicity of Algeria to provoke conflict. The proof is, the constitutional amendment, which was considered Amazigh language as an official language of the Republic of Algeria although no actual use as a written or issuance of documents language. I did an RFC by notifying the NPOV noticeboard Wikipedia:Neutral_point_of_view/Noticeboard#Listing languages of a country and NPOV: Algeria and the French language - This was not due to any Wikipedian user conduct, but rather because there is a POV dispute within Algerian society on how important French should be (secularists and wealthy vs. Islamists) WhisperToMe (talk) 07:08, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

One said that the NPOV solution is to consider whether the alternate language names would be useful to an English speaker and not trying to think in territorial terms. Because French is used very extensively in Algerian society then it would be useful for an English speaker to know French names of Algerian places, Algerian government agencies, etc. Another clarified that it may be better to just ask "is it spoken?" From my understanding the consensus is towards including French in Algeria-related articles, since at the NPOV noticeboard the responders said the question is not to consider whether French is "Algerian" or "foreign" but strictly whether it is "useful" and/or whether it is spoken there, and considering its proliferation in Algerian society it is "useful." User:Dr. Blofeld has created Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/Contests. The idea is to run a series of contests/editathons focusing on each region of Africa. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
