British crime in film and popular culture[edit]

What about The Long Good Friday? I know for a fact the criminal underworld revolves around Bob Hoskins. --81.79.29.103 15:58, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Project banner image[edit]

If you want a particularly eye-catching image for the project banner, I like Image:John Tenniel - Punch - Ripper cartoon.png. Having any image would definitely help draw attention to the banner. Best of luck with the project! Badbilltucker 17:39, 22 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, great picture! I've added it to Template:WP British Crime Invitation for the other members to take a look (as it is certainly in need of a good image). I and the project certainly appreciate your assintance and I'm sure the project founder will be interested. MadMax 07:49, 23 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Day Awards[edit]

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 21:06, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Crime[edit]

Articles for deletion[edit]

  • The following articles have been proposed for deletion:
  1. Ebony Simpson, an Australian murder victim nominated on the basis of being a non notable/memorial entry. Interestingly enough, it has been proposed by one editor to merge the victim to the crime, which has apparently been becoming common practice.
  2. CrimeLine - a non notable/unverified organization.
  3. Dean Roberts (criminal) - non notible drug dealer
  4. Michael Tyrell (drug trafficker) - non notable criminal

Naming conventions concerning ethnic organized crime articles[edit]

There has been a recent cfd/renaming discussion relating to Category:Gangs by ethnicity as well as all ethnic and historically related street gang categorires which includes Historical gangs of London (a subcategory of Historical criminals of London) and I assume will effect naming conventions of general crime related categories to eliminate ethnicity from crime related categories.

On a related note, a related discussion on changing Jewish-American organized crime to a "less offensive and accusatory" title will also effect article naming conventions for similar organized crime related articles such as Talk:African-American organized crime and Talk:Greek-American organized crime and I assume related British articles as well.

Also, there has been some discussion regarding about a possible "collaberation of the week" between the various crime related WikiProject and I was wondering f that would be of interest to anyone ? MadMax 23:12, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

John Haase and Paul Bennett[edit]

These two (uncle/nephew, from Liverpool) are serving 20 years each for drugs trafficking and perverting the course of justice. They were the subject of a long Customs & Excise investigation which was detailed in a book ("Lima 3" by Harry Ferguson), convicted of heroin distribution, then pardoned after less than a year by the Home Secretary for providing information leading to the seizure of many firearms. After a long investigation it was concluded that this was a set-up and the weapons belonged to the pair in the first place. They were convicted and sentenced to 20 years each. They claimed that Michael Howard took a bribe (not substantiated), and Peter Kilfoyle MP spent some time campaigning for an investigation.

My question is whether they deserve an article? Personally I think the number of newspaper articles on the various trials, the book, and the involvement of the Home Secretary (the case is mentioned in the wiki on Royal Pardons) make them notable. I've started an outline here. If I reference it properly and obey WP:BLP, do others agree that this will make a decent article? I don't want to waste my time if it's not going to meet the criteria.

Proposed merger and page move[edit]

There is a proposal to merge Fred West and Rosemary West into a single article entitled Fred and Rosemary West. --Ohconfucius ¡digame! 03:23, 26 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I would welcome some alternative views/voices on this article. I got involved about two months after the article was originally started, and have put some work into expanding this and including cited information which outlines the importance of this case. A couple of editors have just weighed in, one of them suggesting it should be placed on AfD. This seems extreme to me: in fact I would argue that the ramifications of this case are already important and are yet to be fully realised, given that even now there's a government research going on which was prompted by the case and which is not due to reach completion for well over another year. But I think the article could certainly do with more editors working on it to get it balanced and up to scratch. At the moment it seems to be just me, plus the two editors who appear to be working as a team.

Hope to see you there. Alfietucker (talk) 15:05, 26 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Britons convicted of offences outside the UK[edit]

I know this project deals with British crime, but am wondering if there is a remit for including Britons convicted abroad. I'm interested as I've been working on an article about the Lindsay Sandiford case today. Any thoughts? Paul MacDermott (talk) 16:57, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Chris Huhne, Vicky Pryce, Southwark Crown Court and equal justice for all?[edit]

I received an email with the case of "Chris Huhne and Vicky Pryce each jailed for eight months” as a good example of equal justice for all. Others were more or less condemned by identical causes? All who lie to the English justice are sentenced to eight months in prison and 120,000 pounds? Or just politicians? - --Pires Portugal (talk) 20:13, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Leaflet for Wikiproject British Crime at Wikimania 2014[edit]

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

The deadline for submissions is 1st July 2014

For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:

The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Exploitation in Rotherham has just been released, and has been picked up by all the major British news media. What it reports is absolutely horrific. This is one of the most serious abuse scandals in UK history, and is a major UK crime story that requires in-depth coverage on Wikipedia. -- The Anome (talk) 16:37, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal[edit]

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject X is live![edit]

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Categories[edit]

For "Crimes in the United Kingdom" by year, is it the year of the crime or the year of conviction? For example, at Operation Midland we have at present both 2014 and 2019 though there was only one crime (perversion of the course of justice). For most crimes it is likely to be the year of the crime, but in this case it is less clear. I cannot see any guidance here.Davidships (talk) 08:45, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Can you help with page numbering?[edit]

I was wondering if anyone has a copy of the following book and could help with identifying some page numbers:

  • Szereto, Mitzi (2020). "The Summer of the Fox by Mark Fryers". The Best New True Crime Stories: Small Towns. Mango Media. ISBN 978-1-64250-280-0.

I recently created the page Malcolm Fairley and have cited a chapter from the book in the article after finding it displayed in its entirety on Google Books. But Google Books doesn't show any page numbers for it. I mentioned this at the helpdesk and it was suggested I ask on the talk page of a relevant WikiProject, so here I am as this seems like a possible place where there may be someone who owns a copy. Any help would be much appreciated, and please feel free to edit the article and add the relevant information. Thanks in advance, This is Paul (talk) 21:54, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sarah Everard Murder needs a wikipedia page?[edit]

Do you think the Murder of Sarah Everard should have a wikipedia page? If so, it should probably be made soon.DansterTheManster (talk) 17:33, 12 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Femicide in the UK[edit]

Hi all, in light of recent events concerning the disappearance of Sarah Everard and the list of femicides read out in Parliament [1] and covered in the Guardian[2]. I have drafted a new navigation box template to highlight the femicides that have taken place and the organisations and support groups that exist also. I took my cue from the Black Lives Matter template (so it could cover related pages, existing and proposed legislation, popular culture also) but I wanted to gauge your opinion on the usefulness and appropriateness of the draft template as things stand. The template is here. and there is a discussion on the template's talk page about what is best to include (or not), so those who do not wish to see it do not have to. Possible merger?[edit]

I have opened a discussion at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Crime_and_Criminal_Biography#Possible_merger_of_related_WikiProjects? suggesting potentially merging this WikiProject into the main Crime WikiProject, either directly or changing this project into a task force - please take a look and comment if you have any thoughts. SnowFire (talk) 22:05, 29 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Note: I've added an inactive marker to the WikiProject status. Nobody else has chimed in favor or against on this particular project in the discussion at WPCRIME currently. SnowFire (talk) 08:34, 5 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@SnowFire Why has this WikiProject changed status from Inactive to Defunct without a formal proposal to change its status? All that has been proposed is a possible merger. I would have expected reasonable notice be given to all interested users seeking their opinions on such a merger and a second proposal for making this WikiProject defunct, rather than just retaining it as inactive. Also, the fact that this sort of action was being contemplated should have been prominently displayed on at least the project page so that it might be noticed by other editors who are not members of this WikiProject. I would have thought the response you received at WikiProject Crime (now archived) should have been a clue that a lack of response does not mean your merger proposal was accepted by all editors. WP:POLSILENCE warns that lack of exposure of the proposed change of a policy, which I see this change as, may be a reason for the lack of response, not that anyone agrees with what has been done. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 10:32, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Cameron Dewe: It was prominently displayed for nine months on the main page with the "inactive" status tag. And this very talk thread was the proposal. Nobody responded, and more importantly, there have been no conversations and no nothing on this Wikiproject talk page for years and years and years, excluding bot notices. You've only noticed because I started, intentionally slowly, to actually clean up these banners, but there's nobody to talk too here. A WikiProject without active users isn't a thing - the whole point is to facilitate collaboration, which obviously isn't happening. More generally, the idea behind this project (and the Australia project) was incorrect to begin with. Subdividing projects is fine, but it needs to be sensible subdivisions - you can imagine someone creating a Wikiproject like "Crime articles that start with the letter A" but that would be silly. There's no need nor interest to call out British Crime as specially different, and no British Crime only community developed that wanted to be separate from the main Crime WP for some reason. This was a good-faith idea that didn't pan out, as is utterly obvious if you read the talk page. If you were genuinely using this WikiProject, you would have spoken up 9 months ago. You weren't, which is fine! Nobody was, so it wasn't a very useful place for collaboration. But that also means that we have to face facts: this WikiProject is defunct. Converting to a task force[edit]

Since this project is listed as inactive, would there be any opposition in converting this into a task force of Wikipedia:WikiProject Crime and Criminal Biography? This would give articles in this project a wider editor pool to work with. Gonnym (talk) 09:29, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The only issue I have with it is, fundamentally, British crime does not seem to be a particularly useful subset of crime, unlike say, Serial killers or organized crime. It's simply articles with an intersection of being both in the United Kingdom and crime-related, which IMO is a very misguided reason to have made a WikiProject - it's defined by being two overlapping scopes instead of a unique or specialized one
If it's going to be a task force of anything it should probably be of WikiProject United Kingdom (like how multiple WikiProjects have a law task force) Or barring that just flat out redirected to WP Crime and the pages marked historical or something PARAKANYAA (talk) 10:15, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's also a good point. Gonnym (talk) 10:24, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, checking again, that's closer to what Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia does with their template and WikiProject Australian crime. A crime parameter. Should be merged with WikiProject UK then - or at the very least the banner should as a subproject (idk if it matters if we change the name to task force) PARAKANYAA (talk) 10:38, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
