Rape in $country categories

Do people agree that the Category:Rape by country tree, eg. Category:Rape in Italy, also makes sense as part of the Category:Women by country or Category:Women's rights by country tree? Criminal justice financial obligations

I just stubbed Criminal justice financial obligations. Sorry for it being just a single sentence. I will deorphan it and do what else I can. If anyone out there cares about the subject, please consider adding a bit to expand it. There are plenty of refs pasted its talk page. Many thanks. Bills and invoices for criminal justice financial obligations

Hi. I'm looking for the bills and invoices given to those who were incarcerated. They are for the Criminal justice financial obligations article.

Examples:

  • Bill for per diem jail charges
  • Fines
  • Restitution
  • Bill for court costs

An example of what I am after is contained roughly half way into this pdf.

(I cannot find anything at commons.)

So, if anyone has something like this and can take a photo of it to upload to commons, it would really improve the article.

Many thanks!

  • I’m a member of WikiProject Oregon. Murder of Martha Morrison has a Wiki-Oregon tag, but we don’t see many crime articles so this one is hard to rate. Since you folks see this kind of article all the time, we would like to follow your lead regarding article quality rating. If someone from your team can review and score this article, we’ll use your expertise as guide for our rating. Thanks!--Orygun (talk) 18:31, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

A new newsletter directory is out!

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Protected witnesses: suspected criminals or not?

Hello. I'm planning to write a biography about a criminal-turned-protected witnesses. The man was one of the founders of Los Zetas crime syndicate, but he was never convicted of any crimes because he collaborated with authorities to frame others (who later were convicted). My question is: how do I refer to the person in the lead? "Mexican criminal"? "Mexican suspected criminal"? I usually refer to subjects by "convicted" or "suspected" depending on their legal status. See here and here for examples. Thanks, MX () 20:15, 13 May 2019 (UTC)

Proposed chance of status

The Samuel Little article should probably be upgraded from its current designation of "Low Importance," given the accruing news about the scope of the murders and the multijurisdictional impact of this confessed serial killer. Note also, there is some question about the reliability of the articles content (see entry of this date at the Talk page), and elevating it might have the important result of improving the trustworthiness of the article content. 2601:246:C700:2DB2:9C90:D6E2:6F44:E4AB (talk) 19:54, 8 June 2019 (UTC)

OIS charge

If an officer was charged as a result of an OIS but later not convicted, could we please redact their name? I think what is interesting about these articles is how OISs occur and their circumstances, but not necessarily the names of the individuals involved. However, the name is still in all our references (newspaper articles) and on Google, so I am not sure we can redact it. Do we need to wait for the press to redact the name from their URLs first? At the same time, if they are not convicted, the justice system assumes it is a normal part of their job.Zigzig20s (talk) 22:52, 24 July 2019 (UTC)

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

O. J. Simpson murder case article

More eyes are needed at O. J. Simpson murder case (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views).

It has gotten progressively worse in recent months. In this section, I stated, "The article should be careful to not include every little thing, or everything in excessive detail. This is per WP:DIARY and WP:INDISCRIMINATE. Wikipedia is not meant to give a blow-by-blow/day-by-day account of the trial. It's meant to sufficiently summarize what happened." Despite this, the article continues to be expanded with any and everything by one editor in particular. Different types of issues abound. I took the article off my watchlist, and have occasionally checked back. Like I stated, worse and worse. Flyer22 Reborn (talk) 21:29, 30 December 2019 (UTC)

2019 and 2020 crimes by month categories

I added {{Year by category}} to the top of the month-by-month sub-categories of Category:2020 crimes by month and Category:2020 crimes by month. Compare with Category:2018 crimes by month.

My change has one obvious side-effect: It adds the category page to Category:Year by category — used with year parameter(s) equals year in page title. Since this is just the category page not the pages in the category, it's no big deal.

It also has subtle side effects of calling templates instead of spelling out the year verbatim, which can slightly increase server load. This is to assist copying-and-pasting Category:February 2020 crimes to Category:March 2020 crimes and so on when those pages are needed. Again, since this only affects the category page and the category pages aren't viewed much, this is no big deal.

If this should be pushed through to all of the years going back to 1970 plus 1919, consider asking a bot to do it. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 19:09, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

Is there another article to link this up with? In the lead it says "DNA found at the scene linked the murder to two other murders and six rapes." Which suggests to me that the article might be better under a different title with this as a redirect. Are illicit trade and black market the same or different topics?

There is an ongoing discussion on the talk page on Black market on whether it is the same topic as illicit trade. An editor, who is of the opinion that it is a duplicate topic, has converted the article that I created on illicit trade into a redirect to black market.   The latest version of the illicit trade article can be found at: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Illicit_trade&oldid=974366109 One way or another, I think that the relationship between these two topics needs to be clarified, and your contribution to the discussion would be much appreciated. Hi all

I've just started an article for Hubert Nathan Myers and Clifford Williams who spent 43 years in prison of murder before being exonerated. Its clear that they are notable enough for Wikipedia and very widely covered in the media (I've only added a small number of the references available). However I don't understand what to call the article to correctly fit in with Wikipedia policies (biographies are not usually my thing). There appear to be a few options:

  1. Keep the article about two people (this makes sense because their stories are so closely related)
  2. Split it into two separate biographies
  3. Rename the article to be able the case (I assume this is the actual correct one but no idea what to call the case, The state of Florisa vs ??? maybe).

Please feel free to just change it to what is correct

Thanks

Categories and levels of importance

How is it determined whether a crime is categorized as being of mid-level importance or more or less importance? I see that 2021 storming of the United States Capitol is designated as a crime of mid-level importance, which seems a bit of an understatement, but I wondered about the criteria for this judgment.--Bhuck (talk) 13:58, 12 January 2021 (UTC)

This had puzzled me too. Unfortunately, the Crime WikiProject guidelines offer no guidance. Then I discovered the vital articles list. I note that the 2021 storming of the United States Capitol article is a level 5 vital article in the History - Americas section (item 14.3.7 on the list). If you open the multiple WikiProjects banner on the talk page you will see the article is ranked as "High" in other WikiProjects.
As a crime it is basically a riot in which several people were killed or injured. so a along with with murder or manslaughter as well as other violent crime is involved there is a rioting mob committing an aggravated burglary. I presume that means it ranks below Crime, which would presumably be a "Top" article, since that is a level 4 vital article and any level 5 vital articles about types of crime mentioned, would be "High" importance. While it is a vital article, it is not a vital crime article, so a "Mid" importance rating for the article in question, from the crime perspective, which would seem about right for this WikiProject, though perhaps it could rank higher for other WikiProjects. While it wasn't revolutionary or world-changing, it was a relatively rare event; the last storming of the Capitol was in the early 1800s, I think. So it isn't a "run of the mill" crime, which would only rate as "Low" without these sorts of distinguishing aspects that makes it stand out from the crowd.
Another way to think of it is like a music chart, the "Top" category is the top 10, 20 or 50 odd articles you would choose. Next are the "High" hundred or so articles to go on the list. Then "Mid" takes up the middle ground thousand or so articles, while "Low" is the large pool of notable articles. Meanwhile "NA" makes up the category of pages that are not really articles but various ways if finding a notable article; such as Categories, Disambiguation pages, Redirects, Images and Notable Lists (Note:Wikipedia is discriminating when it comes to lists, so some lists might not be articles but can be useful for navigation.) At the moment I think WikiProject Crime might be a bit top heavy but that could be because those top articles are also top articles in other projects. Though, I don't think one should go trying to even things out by changing scores; it is probably a sign that there are another 50,000 to 100,000 crime articles to be written in the "Low" category, rather than the other categories might need "adjustment". At least that is my thinking. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 12:06, 5 March 2021 (UTC)

Free image for Raymond Riles, Texas Death Row

I created the entry on Raymond Riles, a longtime death row inmate in Texas. There is a request for resentencing pending before the state criminal appeals court, and that decision may bring some traffic to the article, so I am trying to locate a free image. I have tried searching several of the sites listed here (like Flickr and Pond5).

I know that some mugshots are considered PD, but I don't know a lot about that area. There is an image on this Texas death row information sheet, but I don't see any information about the source of the photo. It's old, and it could be the photo that was taken by TDCJ when he was received into death row in the 1970s, but I don't think I can move forward without knowing the source for sure. I just thought I'd see whether anyone has had a similar situation or whether there might be a PD image that I am overlooking. Thanks! Larry Hockett (Talk) 14:31, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

Help with "Anabaptist/Mennonite Church sexual abuse cases"

I have created the page Draft:Anabaptist/Mennonite Church sexual abuse cases and am still working at finishing up the draft. I was wondering if someone on here would be willing to look it over and point out if there is anything that could cause legal issues and suggestions for changing things. I would like to change the title of the page to "sexual misconduct" cases rather than "sexual abuse" cases because this more accurately describes the content of the page and most of the cases referenced on the page were not dealt with in a court of law but were handled only within church organizations.

I'm also wondering if anyone would be interested in finishing up writing the article based on the links I have in there as references as I have some conflict of interests and I'm not sure if I should continue to work on this page right now but I think it's important for people in the church and the general public to be informed about the sexual misconduct that has gone on in the church and church organizations.

Thanks for your help.

Murder vs homicide

We had a discussion Talk:2021_Atlanta_spa_shootings#Category:murder here about when to categorize something as a murder. It was decided that it would be a violation of BLPCRIME to categorize something as a murder prior to a conviction. I'm asking if we should rename the categories to homicide. So instead of Category:Murder change it to Category:Homicide, Category:Murder in 2021 to Category:Homicide in 2021, and so forth to be more consistent with BLPCRIME and be more inclusive? I'm looking for guidance on moving the article Michael Taylor (demoniac). The disambiguation, demoniac, seems absolutely inappropriate for encyclopedic tone, though I just can't find precedent for this type of notability. It also occurs to me that the article could be better written if about the case and his exorcism, rather than about him as a person. This would, among other outcomes, solve the issue of the article title. Please weigh in if you have thoughts. — HTGS (talk) 09:28, 23 May 2021 (UTC)

Insurgencies and rebellions

Do articles about insurgencies and rebellions such as Battle of Chinagodrar qualify as a "crime" article assuming the page isn't about a "war crime"? Yes, an insurgency is treason, but this if every insurgency was considered under this wikiproject, the scope would be huge.

Signpost article

The following article in the current issue of the Signpost may be of interest to members of this WikiProject:

As described in that article, Wikipedia for more than two years illustrated its article on serial killer Nathaniel White with the picture of another man of the same name, who sued the WMF. This unfortunate case has implications for BLP policy as well as Wikipedia's sourcing standards for police photographs: the source used in this case, crimefeed.com (a site that belongs to Discovery, Inc. – whose journalistic standards seem to have deteriorated significantly over the years) proved unreliable, and the mistake appears to have had a devastating impact on the individual whose picture was wrongly shown both in Wikipedia and on TV.

Possible merger of related WikiProjects?

Hello all,

I'm not sure this is 100% the best use of time and resources, but... why are there separate WikiProjects between WikiProject Crime and Criminal Biography, Wikipedia:WikiProject British crime, and Wikipedia:WikiProject Australian crime? The talk pages on the other two child projects seem very dead, at least if automated notifications from RMCD bot are thrown out. The entire point of a WikiProject is collaboration, and collaboration doesn't appear to be happening there. I'd suggest three options:

  1. The status quo. Two dead WikiProjects, but maybe that's okay to let lie.
  2. Move them into this project as task forces - there'll be some parameter in Template:WikiProject Crime like British=yes or Australian=yes that marks it for addition to the relevant task force.
  3. Move them into this project as a straight-up merge. No special task forces, retain the old pages as historical reference only.

Of these, I would be in favor of option 3. There's no current marking of American crime or French crime as something special, and if the collaboration on the specific talk pages as Wikiprojects is dead right now, they'll still be dead as a task force. Option 2 is another choice if there's a belief that collaboration will continue to happen in the future, but there's no need for separate WikiProjects, so merge them in as task forces. And Option 1... well, that doesn't require any effort, at least.

Any thoughts on this? I'm just an interested outsider, not really a usual participant in this WikiProject, so this is only a suggestion. I do think that the entire point of WikiProjects is collaboration, and if that isn't happening very often on these sub-projects currently, than something should be done - the last notification on the British Crime talk page that received a reply on the WP talk page was in 2014. I'm sure some of the notifications attracted interest to other talk pages, maybe, but it's still pretty quiet. SnowFire (talk) 22:04, 29 November 2021 (UTC)

Quietness is not the point to judge - and I have left my comment at the Australian Crime Project. It is not a way to gain interest of editors, such rationale has in the past not gained extra editors or involvement.

Strong Objection - subsuming national projects is not what wikipedia is about - it provides assessment for component parts of the national project. I believe that a close examination of the history of what Military History has swallowed up over time shows that the incorporating/absorbing of projects or task forces has not improved the quality of information on wikipedia. In most cases where projects go quiet, too bad - the component nature of projects under the larger national projects are an important part of the larger picture - to label/mark/reduce the effort into of the above suggestions is missing the point of how some things can work despite apparent quietness.JarrahTree 09:28, 30 November 2021 (UTC)

  • The goal is improving the quality of information on Wikipedia, yes. A "dead" Wikiproject is not actually doing that though, so I don't really see your point. Whatever is "working well" at the current Australian Crime project can continue to work well as a task force or as part of the larger Crime project. Just to back up to first principles here - suppose someone makes Wikiproject Widgets (or some other hypothetical topic). There is no activity at WikiProject Widgets, ever, but let's say work on widget articles continues, and widgets is an important topic. The WikiProject Widgets still isn't needed - the entire point of a WikiProject is to arrange collaboration between editors. Deleting the project doesn't mean that widget articles are unimportant or will somehow become worse, and they might even become better. I disagree with your MILHIST example, too: I think a larger pool of talk page watchers is generally a good thing for when discussions or notifications need to be made. Less likelihood of a WP:LOCALCONSENSUS going off-track. SnowFire (talk) 23:56, 30 November 2021 (UTC)

Draft article for Murder of Sydney Loofe

Finally got to finish the article for the 2017 murder of Nebraskan woman Sydney Loofe. It would mean so much if anyone can take a look at the article and give some feedback or review. Thank you!! FlantasyFlan (talk) 05:02, 27 March 2022 (UTC)

Hello FlantasyFlan! Nice to meet you! I am reviewing on this article and should have some feedback for you in the next couple of days! CroissantAvenue (talk) 22:06, 6 April 2022 (UTC)
Hey FlantasyFlan! I've taken some time to give feedback on your article. Nice work overall. Most notes have to do with maintaining a neutral point of view and ensuring you're writing in an encyclopedic tone. I wrote comments below each section and bolded them (also bolded subheaders) so you can find them more easily. Let me know if you have any questions!
On November 15, 2017, Sydney Loofe left work for a Tinder date in Wilber, Nebraska. The day after, Loofe was reported missing after failing to appear for work at a local Menards store in Lincoln. Roughly three weeks later, Loofe's dismembered remains were found along a gravel road sixty miles away from her date location.
Two suspects, Bailey Boswell and Aubrey Trail, were arrested in connection to Loofe's murder. The suspects' stories have changed throughout time. Initially, Boswell and Trail denied involvement in Loofe's killing, but after the discovery of Loofe's body, Trail confessed to the killing, while Boswell has maintained innocence. Store receipts and video evidence released by the prosecution show the couple purchasing bleach, saws, and trash bags shortly before Loofe's disappearance, and cell tower data map out the suspects following Loofe on the day of the date. Trail was sentenced to death, while Boswell was sentenced to life in prison. Loofe's murder has attracted significant mainstream media attention, with news outlets publishing newer developments as the trials proceeded.
-Add citations to this section.
-Probably delete or reword the sentence "Loofe's murder has attracted significant mainstream attention" - it's typical for news outlets to publish stories on developing cases, so this doesn't really need to be stated
- Be careful on Wikipedia with the use of strong adjectives, as it can be seen as biased and speculative. Ie, in this case, “significant mainstream media”
Sydney Loofe
Sydney Irene Loofe was born on August 21, 1993, in Broken Bow, Nebraska. Raised in Arcadia by her parents George W. and Susie Loofe, Sydney and her family moved to Neligh around 2000. She was known for her skilled fishing. Loofe played basketball and golf while in school, but she developed scoliosis as a teenager, hindering her from playing sports. After graduating from Neligh-Oakdale High School in 2011, she worked at her local Menards store. Susie recounted her daughter suffering from anxiety and major depression. Merely days before her disappearance, Loofe discussed her worsening mental health with her family, who scheduled and drove her to a doctor appointment to get antidepressants. It was the last time that Loofe’s family saw her.
-While it’s generally nice to learn about the victim’s personal interests and background, you want to make sure the article mainly focuses on the facts of the case and is written from a neutral point of view. Personal interests usually don’t qualify as “encyclopedic” by Wikipedia standards, so I would omit the information about her playing golf and basketball, and developing scoliosis, as it doesn’t really pertain to the case.
Bailey Boswell and Aubrey Trail
Bailey Marie Boswell was raised in Leon, Iowa. She was an infant when her biological father was murdered. She excelled at school athletics, topping the list of fastest runners on her relay team and scoring dozens of points in basketball games. In fact, she was offered a scholarship to play college basketball. However, she turned to substance abuse after her graduation. A 2016 issue of the local newspaper of Cameron, Missouri, shows Boswell being cited $400 for possession of recreational drug paraphernalia. A mother to one daughter, Boswell was married to Freddy Pannell. Bailey's mother Priscilla recounted that the Pannell-Boswell relationship was "physically, emotionally and sexually abusive." Pannell had a drug addiction that led authorities to revoke the parents' custody of their school-aged daughter. According to Priscilla, Pannell also beat up a pregnant Bailey before kicking her face. Priscilla went on to discuss Bailey's move to Princeton, Iowa, and her unsuccessful plan to get back on her feet. The prosecutor claimed that Boswell sought out Trail on the now-defunct sex marketplace Backpage, alleging that she was looking for a sugar daddy.
-Echoing the same thoughts with the previous paragraph. Make sure you stick to relevant facts related to the case. I would delete the information about basketball and turning to substance abuse. Maybe could read something like:
“Bailey Marie Boswell was raised in Leon, Iowa. She was an infant when her biological father was murdered. Boswell was married to Freddy Pannell and had one daughter. She moved to Princeton, Iowa, after her parental custody was revoked due to drug-related charges. Boswell’s mother claimed Priscilla suffered abuse at the hands of Pannell. The prosecutor claimed that Boswell sought out Trail on the now-defunct sex marketplace Backpage, alleging that she was looking for a sugar daddy.”
Aubrey Clifton Trail endured a difficult childhood. At the age of two, he was abused by his parents before his grandfather took care of him. Only time separated Trail from returning back to his parents' household, where he was again abused by his stepfather. He grew up penniless, moving steadily from one foster home and juvenile facility to another, before landing in prison as a teenager for armed robbery.
-Again, you want to make sure you’re writing in an encyclopedic, neutral tone per Wikipedia’s guidelines. Maybe rephrase to say something like:  “Trail was abused by his parents growing up, and he spent some time living with his grandfather, as well as in the foster care system, and a juvenile facility. He went to prison as a teenager for armed robbery.”
The dates
Loofe agreed to go on a first date with Bailey Boswell on November 14, 2017. Boswell used a fake alias of "Audrey." Loofe asked Boswell twice if they will be the only people at the date, to which Boswell responded in the affirmative. The date was held in a basement that Boswell and Aubrey have rented for six months. On November 15, Loofe went on another date with Boswell. Before heading to her date, Loofe posted a Snapchat image captioned "Ready for my date." Cell tower data show Boswell and Trail's phones traveling from Loofe's rental home to Wilber. Loofe's phone last pinged in Wilber before the phone shut off at 8:32 p.m
-Great work here! Maybe change title to something like “Boswell and Trail Dating” so it’s a little clearer what you’re talking about.
Loofe goes missing
On November 16, Loofe, who was a store clerk at one of the Menards stores in Lincoln, failed to show up for work. Her mother Susie texted her, apparently unaware Sydney was on a date, but Sydney did not respond. Not customary for Sydney to not be online for this long, Susie reported her daughter missing, and the next day, the police paid a welfare check visit at her rental home. Sydney was not found in her home, but there was no evidence of an altercation, and her car, glasses, and purse were left behind. Sydney’s cat was not fed as usual.
-Nice work here!
Bleach odor at Boswell and Trail’s basement
Meanwhile, the owner of the duplex where Boswell and Trail rented the basement complained of a bleach odor emanating from the basement. The smell was so strong that a member of the owner's family began throwing up and getting hives. Additionally, it was strange for Boswell and Trail to have an air conditioner on in the cold month of November.
-“Meanwhile” is a bit vague. See if you can add a date, even if it’s just a month
-I would reword the sentence about the smell because of the tone. Maybe something like “A member of the owner’s family reported throwing up and getting hives due to the strong odor.”
-The sentence about the air conditioner may be viewed as speculative in the way it’s written. I would either delete or reword. Did someone report it was “strange?” Maybe could add more info from the article that you cited.
Loofe confided her date plans in several friends, among them Brooklyn McCrystal. After Loofe went missing, McCrystal set out to find out the identity of the Tinder date. She swiped left on one Tinder profile after another until stumbling upon the profile of "Audrey," where she swiped right. She messaged "Audrey," who responded by messaging back her phone number, which McCrystal provided to authorities.
-Make sure you’re sticking to an encyclopedic tone. Would reword the sentence “She swiped on Tinder until she came across the profile of “Audrey,” where she swiped right.
-Also would link to Tinder’s wiki page here
Within two days, Saline County police was able to pin down the Wilber duplex as the last place where Loofe's phone pinged. Police conducted a welfare check, knocking on Boswell and Trail's apartment door, but no one answered. Using the landlord's key, the police entered the apartment, but the only thing that caught their attention was the pungent smell of bleach. The next day, police came ready with a search warrant, but again, nothing was out of the ordinary, and the basement looked exactly the same as the day before.
-Change “was” to “were” in the first sentence
-Try to eliminate some unnecessary wording. Suggested changes:
“Using the landlord’s key, the police entered the apartment and noted the strong smell of bleach. They returned the next with a search warrant, and noted nothing of interest.”
Persons of interest
On November 28, Boswell and Trail were considered by police as persons of interest. The couple responded to this declaration by making a Facebook livestream defending themselves and maintaining their innocence. Boswell claimed that the dates involved her and Loofe driving the car around and smoking cannabis, and that following the second date, Boswell drove Loofe to a friend's home in what was Boswell's last sighting of Loofe. Trail can be heard praying for Loofe to be found safe soon. On November 30, Boswell and Trail were arrested at a motel in Branson, Missouri, albeit for a different set of charges related to fraud. They possessed "maps, sleeping bags and hiking shoes" that appeared to have been part of their plan to escape to Mexico.
-Would reword this sentence to something like:
“On November 28, (add year), police announced Boswell and Trail as persons of interest. Following the announcement, Boswell and Trail made a Facebook livestream defending themselves and maintaining their innocence.”
Loofe’s body is found
Search teams led by the FBI and local police departments eventually found Loofe's severed remains on December 4 and 5. Body parts, sex toys, apparel, and other items were found wrapped inside many 30-gallon black trash bags alongside a gravel road, approximately one hour west of Wilber. Part of Loofe's upper arm has not yet been found. Three months later, Loofe's slit bra and the shirt seen in her last Snapchat image were discovered.
-Great work here! Would delete the word “eventually” since you already state the date. “Eventually” may be considered vague by Wikipedia standards.
Trail confesses
Trail made several, sometimes contradicting, confessions. Initially, he confessed from jail that he solely killed Loofe. Referencing the law of retaliation, Trail proclaimed his wish to be executed for Loofe's killing. In a subsequent confession, he alleged that Loofe actually died following a third date with Boswell on November 16. In a third confession, he claimed that the trio was to participate in a sexual fantasy where he would be with two women and that he would choke Loofe, but that Loofe accidentally died as a result. In a fourth confession, he recanted some of his previous confessions, claiming there was no such things as sexual fantasy or threesome, but maintained that he accidentally choked Loofe to death. At some point, Trail told the FBI that his job was to make movies for special kinds of kinks; he was paid by people who wanted to see these movies, and he used their money to pay subjects such as Loofe, knowing full well that a choking kink can lead to death. However, some of Trail's confessions seemed credible to authorities, such as when he tipped them about the location where he threw Loofe's smartphone, leading the police to Wilber's Czech Cemetery where indeed they found her phone, driver's license, and credit card.
-Delete the first sentence. The rest of the paragraph shows readers through facts that the information he gave was contradictory.
-”At some point” is a bit vague, so I’d either delete or see if you can find a date
-Delete the phrase, “However, some of Trail’s confessions seemed credible to authorities,” as it sounds a bit speculative/opinionated in the way it’s worded. Instead, I’d suggest changing to “As a part of his confession, Trail tipped off authorities on the location of Loofe’s smartphone, leading the police to Wilber’s Czech Cemetery where the found here phone, driver’s license, and credit card.
Trial commences
A panel of three judges presided over the trial. On June 11, 2018, Boswell and Trail were charged with murder in the first degree and improper disposal of human remains. A day later, the duo made their first court appearance, In July and August, prosecutors expressed their plans to seek capital punishment for Boswell and Trail, both of whom plead not guilty. Prosecution would add conspiracy to commit murder to the list of charges pressed against the two. In June 2019, Trail pled guilty to just one of the charges, namely the improper disposal of Loofe's remains. At the end of June, a frustrated Trail lashed out at the court, proclaiming Bosworth's innocence and cursing everyone before stabbing his neck with what appeared to be a razor blade. He missed a significant portion of the trial following his injury.
* Make sure you’re writing in past tense, per Wikipedia guidelines. Change “would add conspiracy” to “added conspiracy”
* Again careful with the use of descriptive adjectives, as they can violate wikipedia’s neutral point of view guidelines. I would deleted the word “frustrated”
Caught on tape
However, the trial proceeded, and the prosecution presented evidence against the pair. Clerks from Falls City's Grand Weaver Hotel stated that they witnessed Loofe and the suspects at the hotel weeks before Loofe's disappearance. Surveillance cameras recorded Boswell and Trail checking in at a Best Western hotel in Lincoln, nearby Loofe's Menards, on November 14 at 4 p.m. On November 15, at 11:30 a.m., they shopped at Aardvark Antique Mall, buying a folding saw, a weeder, and food grinders. Shortly after, cell tower data for both suspects' phones show that they were waiting near Loofe's residence before her departure to work, and they appear to have followed Loofe to Menards. There, in that day's CCTV recordings, Trail is seen entering at noon right before Loofe exits the store, with Trail looking over his shoulder at her.
At Menards, Trail purchased "an air freshener, cotton cord, Drano, protein bars, a thermometer and lighters." While Loofe was at work, Home Depot surveillance tapes show the duo buying a foot-long hacksaw, wire snips, drop clothes, and a sharp utility knife with backup blades. Other surveillance recordings display Boswell and Trail purchasing a tree saw, 30-gallon trash bags, and a couple gallons of Clorox bleach before and after the murder. Clorox and Hefty plastic bags were bought from a Dollar General store merely hours before Loofe's second date and from a grocery store in Wilber the day after.
Staff at both stores testified at the trial. A manager at the Dollar General store confirmed that the barcodes for the bleach and plastic bags found near Loofe's remains match the ones in Boswell and Trail's receipts. The manager also presented a receipt dated November 16 showing Boswell buying a couple bottles of Drano. At the grocery store, Boswell purchased additional bleach, plastic trash bags, and a trash bin. After these purchases, data from cell towers show the pair's phones traveling to and from the area where Loofe's body remains were found.
-Excellent work on this section! Nice job sticking to the facts of the case.
Electric wire, sex toys, and clothes[edit]
Despite searches far and wide, authorities could not locate the cutting tools, especially the hacksaw. However, they had many items they could analyze, such as handcuffs, rope, dog collar and leash, and sex toys. Loofe's DNA could not be found anywhere on these items. Pieces of electric wire were found scattered near Loofe's remains, which Trail admitted he used to strangle her. However, the FBI found Loofe's blood on some apparel, namely a rubber glove and a pair of pants. Authorities could not identify who wore the glove or pants, although there was "limited support" for Trail's DNA on the surface of the electric wire. Overall, though, the quality of the latent prints was poor, disabling the police from definitively attributing them to any person
-Change “many” to “other”
Ciphers and sadist desires[edit]
In July 2019, three women took the stand to allege that Boswell and Trail had desires to record victims as they torture and kill them before profiting millions from the sales of these videos. In one of his confessions, Trail claimed that he recorded Loofe consenting to be choked, although that tape has never been found, and Trail never claimed to have recorded her death. Trail went on to recant the claim that he recorded Loofe giving consent to being strangled.
Later that month, the FBI revealed that while the pair were housed at the Saline County Jail, Trail transmitted letters, some ciphers, to Boswell informing her of what story to tell the court. The codes were deciphered, showing Trail taking full responsibility for the murder and painting Boswell as a forced participant in the crime. Also written in the letters are Trail's plans to strike gold by making snuff sex films, alleging that he lied about the original intention for no one to get hurt in the process.
-Nice work here!
Defense attorneys for Boswell and Trial were public defenders. After Trail confessed to the strangulation, the defense rested its case on presenting the couple's actions as kinks gone wrong. The defense painted Trail as a person with an impoverished and troubled childhood, someone who is assisting the police in bringing justice to Loofe's family. Trail's attorney also tried poking holes in the prosecution's case, painting Loofe as a depressed person who used cocaine and citing memes depicting choking and rough sex stored in her iCloud accounts as evidence that Loofe sought out such sexual fantasies. Similarly, Boswell's attorney emphasized Boswell's traumatic childhood, and accentuated her role in Loofe's murder as forced after being emotionally manipulated by Trail who was double her age. The common denominator in the pair's defense is the wish to avoid the death penalt
-Nice work here! Change “is the wish” to “was the wish” so it’s in past tense
Convictions and sentences
It took the jury only a couple hours to reach the decision to convict Trail with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and improper disposal of human skeletal remains. Trail sought a new trial, a request that was rejected by Judge Vicky Johnson. Boswell fared better with her request to change venue, which was granted due to prejudice. In February 2020, District Judge Julie Smith recused herself as she was instrumental in the recent implementation of Nebraska's execution protocol.
In October 2020, a jury convicted Boswell of murder in the first degree, conspiracy to commit murder, and improper disposal of human remains. In June 2021, the three-judge panel unanimously agreed to sentence Trail to death. Appealing the sentence, Trail sought to represent himself, a request that was denied. Boswell was sentenced to life in prison after one of the three judges opined that Boswell’s actions did not meet the standard of "exceptional depravity" needed for imposing the capital punishment.
In an unrelated case, Boswell and Trail were sentenced for defrauding hundreds of thousands of dollars from interstate coin buyers. Trail already had a criminal background involving forged checks.
Boswell is now an inmate at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women in York. Trail is on death row at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution in Tecumseh.
-“only a couple of hours” is a bit subjective. I would change it so it reads as an exact fact. ‘It took two hours” or “it took a little over two hours”
-Also not neutral to say “Boswell fared better.” Simply state “Boswell’s request for a change of venue was granted, citing prejudice as the reasoning.”
Legacy
A Facebook page, "Finding Sydney Loofe," was created, gaining 30,000 followers. The page is now named “Celebrating Sydney Loofe.” The Set Me Free Project, an anti-trafficking nonprofit organization, dedicated a $3,000 scholarship in Loofe's name to be granted to students pursuing careers in criminology, online safety, and social work.

Draft article for Murder of Missy Bevers

I wrote this article about the murder of a fitness instructor in the American state of Texas back in 2016. The case still attracts local and national attention almost six years later. Any feedback and review of this article is plentifully appreciated!FlantasyFlan (talk) 00:21, 26 March 2022 (UTC)

Hey FlantasyFlan! I also left some notes for you on this article. I remember listening to a podcast episode about this case! It's a bummer it still hasn't been solved. Anyway, here are my notes. I bolded them to make them easy to find:
On April 18, 2016, the body of fitness instructor Terri "Missy" Bevers was found at Creekside Church of Christ in Midlothian, Texas. Bevers's murder garnered significant media attention after Midlothian police published surveillance videos from inside the church. Captured around the time period before Bevers's murder, the videos show an unknown person in police tactical gear walking around, breaking glass and into doors. Police believe the person in the video is Bevers's murderer. Few developments have been made since the investigation commenced, and the assailant remains at large.
-See if you can add some citations to this section
Background[edit]
Terri "Missy" Bevers was born on August 9, 1970, in Jacksboro, Texas. Wedded to Brandon Bevers in 1998, Missy was a mother to three daughters, and the family resided in Red Oak. Missy Bevers worked as a fitness instructor, holding Camp Gladiator boot camps at Midlothian's Creekside Church of Christ, only twenty minutes away from her residence. Also, Bevers's friends recounted her actively volunteering for The Salvation Army.
-Nice work! Might want to cut out the Salvation Army part, as it doesn’t directly relate to the murder case. It could be viewed as “Biased” writing.
Murder[edit]
Before dawn on April 18, 2016, there was a heavy thunderstorm in Midlothian. The night before her murder, Bevers informed her students that the fitness class would be held inside, as opposed to the typical site at the parking lot. Bevers was last seen on the surveillance tapes arriving at 4:18 a.m. Shortly after 5 a.m., a student entered the class, stumbling upon Bevers's body. Bevers was pronounced dead not long after the police arrived.
-Nice work here!
Investigation[edit]
Bevers was found with several puncture wounds to the head and chest. A police warrant alleged that these wounds were “consistent with tools the suspect was carrying throughout the building." Although police did not confirm whether it was the weapon of murder, the hammer was found alongside other tools near Bevers's body.
-Nice work here.
Police turned their eyes to the surveillance cameras. Although outside cameras were not working on the day of the murder, internal cameras were functional. Tapes at around 4 a.m. appear to show the suspect of an unknown gender and identity walking in the church's hallways and smashing glass with a hammer to break into doors. Interestingly, the suspect wore SWAT police outfit and tactical gear from head to toe, including a "POLICE"-marked vest, a black helmet, and a black pair of gloves. Bevers was in the midst of transporting her exercise gear from her truck to the church when she met the suspect. Released tapes do not show the suspect encountering Bevers, and Midlothian police has not revealed where they crossed paths.
-I would maybe change some of the language so the tone is a bit more encyclopedic. Instead of “Police turned their eyes to surveillance cameras,” simply state “Police then checked the surveillance cameras.”
-I would also delete the word “interestingly” as it’s a bit subjective. Could simply state “The suspect was dressed in a police SWAT outfit…”
-Change “Police has” to “police have”
At first, the suspect surely looked to investigators like a man. However, police had a change of heart later, stating in a warrant that it appeared the suspect had a feminine gait. Investigators shared another potential clue: the suspect appeared to walk slowly, sometimes steadying himself with the wall and having trouble moving his right foot or leg. In 2021, a forensic podiatrist contested both claims, alleging that gait is affected by the weight of the gear and weapons and that there is no relationship between gait and gender.
-Change some of the language here to ensure you’re writing in an encyclopedic tone. I would change “at first the suspect surely looked to investigators like a man” to “At first, police believed the suspect to be male. However, they stated in the warrant that it appeared the suspect had a feminine gait.”
-I would also change the next sentence a bit to “Police also noted that the suspect appeared to walk slowly…”
Initially, police considered burglary as motive. However, they were unable to find anything missing, implying the suspect did not steal. Bevers left behind valuables, among them her purse and iPad. Sources revealed to WFAA that police now believe Bevers was not only targeted, but that the suspect planned to make the crime appear as if it was a burglary gone wrong. One of the
warrants filed by police claimed that the suspect possessed a smartphone with which he might have stalked Bevers's schedules and recorded her murder.
-Add as “a motive” or as “the motive”
-Otherwise, good work!
Additional police search warrants allege that Bevers received "creepy and strange" messages from an unknown male on LinkedIn. Police also believe that Bevers might have conversed with her murderer preceding the crime. Law enforcement was able to track down a person of interest who spoke with Bevers over LinkedIn during Bevers's last months, but the person stated that the conversation was ultimately flirty and innocuous.
-Nice work here!
As usual, Bevers's relatives were questioned. The alibis of Brandon, Missy's husband, and Randy, Missy's father-in-law, checked out: Brandon was in Mississippi fishing, while Randy was in California traveling. Suspicious were roused when a published search warrant reported Randy, four days after the murder, bringing to a dry cleaner a bloodied shirt. Randy later explained the blood as dog blood spilled by two dogs fighting. Midlothian police performed a forensic analysis on the shirt, confirming the absence of human blood and the presence of dog blood.
-I wouldn’t say “as usual.” Simply state “Bevers’s relatives were also questioned.”
-Change “suspicious” to “suspicions”
-The wording is a little confusing with the bloodied shirt sentence. I’d switch to “reported that Randy brought a bloodied shirt to the dry cleaner four days after the murder.”
Initially, a reward was set at $10,000 before doubling to $20,000 and rising to $50,000. As of 2021, there is a reward of $150,000 for information potentially helpful in capturing the suspect. CroissantAvenue (talk) 17:13, 8 April 2022 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

These are redirects with the names of a victim and perpetrator respectively of a murder; currently the redirect target for each is a biography of the murderer (under an anglicised orthography). Neither person is notable outside of the murder, and the murder itself is primarily notable because it was partial inspiration for a famous story. I got a little lost trying to find the relevant guideline; shouldn't the title of the article be something like murder of Elizabeth Chantrelle? Arlo James Barnes 00:23, 12 September 2022 (UTC)

Specifying serial killers' last meals

Reading the article about a serial killer Danny Rolling (who, incidentally, claimed to have been motivated by the desire to become a superstar), I find that the article states that his last meal was lobster tail. I realise I've seen similar information in other Wikipedia articles on serial killers, and I can't help but ask: who on Earth cares? This seems like totally irrelevant and random information. It tells us nothing of significance either about the person or about his acts that make the existence of an article about him justified. The article might as well tell the readers what his favourite colour was, which music band he liked the most and whether he took his tea with sugar. I can't help but get the impression that by this sort of thing, people are giving serial killers exactly what some of them are aiming at - superstar treatment, where even the most insignificant personal details about them become fascinating and 'hallowed' by their crimes for the morbidly obsessed (I imagine the readers would then go on to eat that very last meal in order to somehow feel more akin to the objects of their fascination and devotion, or why not be consistent and celebrate every day with the last meal of whichever 'saint' in the serial killer calendar was executed on that day?). IMO, it would be an improvement if the articles did not include that information. 87.126.21.225 (talk) 20:35, 2 November 2022 (UTC)

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Help with draft

I'm new to creating articles on this subject, and have created my first draft on criminal figures at Draft:Campbell brothers (criminal duo). I'd like some help figuring out if I've done a decent job. I'm unsure how to handle the neutrality on figures who are best-known for association with crime, so I'd love some help on if I struck a decent balance.

This is particularly sensitive since one of the two brothers' daughter is a prominent political figure, therefore I would want to be particularly wary not to strike an improper balance on neutrality about her father. SecretName101 (talk) 21:11, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

Best place to provide feedback would be on the talk page of the draft. Thank you in advance, I hope some of the editors frequenting this page provide assistance. SecretName101 (talk) 21:12, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

Seeking guidance

Could somebody point me to a policy, guideline, or essay that outlines what language can be used at what point in a criminal trial? For instance, in the U.S. a person (a) enters a guilty plea, maybe subject to a plea agreement, which may or may not be constrained by (e.g.) mandatory minimum laws, then later (b) is sentenced. I believe that it's proper to state that they "plead guilty to the crime" after (a), but they can't be described as "found guilty" or "convicted" or even definitively "committed XYZ crime" until a sentence is formally handed down -- correct?

And category and navbox/infobox inclusion of such facts should follow the same standards, yes?

If the prosecutor or defendant has revealed details of the sentence to be served, what's the best language for that? I'm hoping to see a formal statement of Wikipedia standards, but I've had trouble finding one. Pete Forsyth (talk) 02:56, 19 July 2023 (UTC)

I believe you're correct. Only say found guilty/convicted when that has been entered into law. Category/navbox are the same, use charges instead of convictions until then ig? I think you should use future tense on the planned sentence, and specify who said what.
I don't think there are many guidelines beyond WP:BLPCRIME and WP:CRIME, which are mostly about notability/innocent until proven guilty. BLPCRIME is kind of a mess of a policy (it's vague on whether a person whose guilt is not 100% confirmed legally can even be named, which has caused issues lately about the killing of Jordan Neely, the Moscow murders, and most recently the Gilgo Beach serial killer) PARAKANYAA (talk) 03:59, 21 July 2023 (UTC)
@PARAKANYAA: Thank you, that's helpful. -Pete Forsyth (talk) 17:40, 21 July 2023 (UTC)
@Pete Forsyth: I think that overall the criminal justice process is probably a mystery to most people. Each criminal jurisdiction has its own criminal procedures, and often uses arcane language or jargon that was first used centuries ago and has evolved over time. While this is common knowledge among the people involved in the justice system, (judges, lawyers, court reporters and the like,) there seems to be little research or explanation about what the actual processes involve, or the general principles behind the processes concerned and why they exist in their current form. This is not helped by having a multiplicity of often overlapping jurisdictions, each with their own quirks in procedure.
Answering your question about the language to be used, here are my thoughts:
  • Charge: A charge is the formal way that a person accused of a crime is taken to court. It marks the commencement of court proceedings.
  • Guilty plea: A person can plead guilty to a crime they are accused of at any stage, or enter a guilty plea when asked by the Court how they plea. A guilty plea is an admission of responsibility for committing the crime the person is accused of.
  • Plea agreement: This seems to be a common feature of US jurisdictions that is rarely seen in other jurisdictions. This indicates that some form of negotiation has taken place between the accusers and the accused to find the right combination of charges and sentences that the accused person can plead guilty to, and accept. Some jurisdictions limit or even prohibit this activity.
  • Found guilty: At the end of a trial, or hearing of the evidence, the decision-maker (e.g. judge or jury) issues their findings of guilt or not.
  • Conviction: Conviction is where the degree of culpability or responsibility for the crime is decided. Being found guilty does not necessarily lead to a conviction as there may be mitigating circumstances. Similarly, a not guilty finding on certain grounds, such as insanity, might lead to a person being detained for treatment on those grounds.
  • Sentence: Is the determination of the punishment for the crime. This can involve paying a fine, some form of restriction on liberty, victim or social reparation, imprisonment, or even execution, depending on jurisdiction.
I also wonder if it would help to have an essay that covers this and other advice when writing about crime. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 04:09, 6 August 2023 (UTC)

War crimes, crime of aggression and crimes against humanity

Are people who are wanted by Interpol or in prison for war crimes, crimes against humanity and crime of aggression covered by this project? Parham wiki (talk) 17:58, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

@Parham wiki: Most criminal codes recognize that war crimes, as well as crimes against humanity and the like, are valid crimes at both at a national and international level. Charges can be laid in places like the International Criminal Court and arrest warrants issued by criminal courts for "international" jurisdiction crimes. Interpol might co-ordinates such international arrest warrants, just as it does for national police forces. However, Interpol, itself, is not a supranational law enforcement agency, rather it co-ordinates the activities of various law enforcement agencies that do have powers to arrest people. To say that people are "wanted" by Interpol, itself, is not correct; Interpol is only communicating internationally that a member law enforcement agency wants to arrest somebody at large, internationally. Because it is still crime, I think this WikiProject should include these international jurisdiction crimes within its scope. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 09:47, 9 August 2023 (UTC)

WikiProject Scope for Criminal biographies

The Criminal biographies section of this WikiProjects scope includes the statement that "... due to the sensitiveness and uniqueness of their biography, something different needs to be done." but provides no further explanation. Various other guidelines such as WP:CRIMINAL and WP:SUSPECT, as well as WP:1E, WP:BLP1E and WP:PSEUDO strongly suggest writing about notable crimes rather than about the criminal perpetrators. This makes me wonder when is it appropriate to write a criminal biography, what needs to be done differently an an ordinary biography, and how sensitive and unique are criminal biographies that they require such special treatment, whatever that may be. Can someone explain this statement in more detail? - Cameron Dewe (talk) 05:18, 6 August 2023 (UTC)

I think a lot of this can be attributed to the fact that most of this WikiProject’s page hasn’t been updated since at least 2012, and that specific section has not been updated since the page's first revision in 2007. I updated some of the page (a lot of dead links) but the content of the page might need some changes too. I have no idea what that’s specifically supposed to mean, it seams like weasel words that can mean anything. Could be better summarized as “criminal biographies on wiki are often bad and this project aims to fix them". The only project specific concern is a lot of people get confused about legal terminology (as you summed up in your reply above, also I think an essay about the terminology would be a good idea)
From what I’ve noticed the rule informally seems to be
- If there’s a massive amount of information on a case that it can’t fit on just one page, it usually gets a page for both the perpetrator and event (like how there’s a page for both the Tucson shooting and Jared Lee Loughner, same with Virginia Tech and Seung Hui Cho)
- Some older cases were reported on primarily discussing the name of the perpetrator and not really giving a name to the “events”, this has mostly changed now but I’d argue that unless the modern coverage changes pages on the old cases should probably be built a similar way. Proportional to the coverage I suppose? From my reading PSEUDO only applies to victims of crimes, the perpetrator is inherently relevant to the event (since they mention Virginia Tech as an example)
tldr: this wikiproject is old and not maintained much, probably needs some updates PARAKANYAA (talk) 14:35, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
I altered the phrasing to be more in line with how this is actually treated (sorry if that's presumptive, but as it stands that guidance hasn't been updated in 16 years, is pretty meaningless, and it's bugging me too), more change could be done
Additional issue: The crime opentask template is also very out of date, and since it has template protection it can't be edited without making specific requests. This seems kind of useless for what kind of template it is... what's the point of a template for open tasks (some of which, like discussions, are usually time sensitive) that never gets updated and that we can't edit without asking template editors? PARAKANYAA (talk) 17:28, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
@PARAKANYAA:Thanks for updating the project page, mostly. However, I do think you were a bit too bold when updating the scope statement. I think your change is an over-simplification and the scope statement needs more meat on it, not less. I preferred it the way it was before and wondered if you would mind if that change was reverted. I also think we need to make a clear distinction between which articles are "Crime" and which are "Criminal Biographies" as these have been two different aspects of the WikiProject for a very long time. What I was seeking by my original question was further clarification of what distinguishes a Criminal Biography from an ordinary biography; otherwise why have them at all. Your identification that there are unique BLP issues is a good start, but I think the scope statement needs to go further and explain what gets included as a Criminal Biography, and what doesn't, and why. Then we can decide which banner is more appropriate; {{Template:WikiProject Crime}} or {{Template:WikiProject Criminal}}, because there are different assessment criteria. For example: Has Vladimir Putin committed crimes, or should he merit having a criminal biography banner added to his article? (He has just been added to the project.) - Cameron Dewe (talk) 10:14, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
@Cameron Dewe No worries (sorry for the late response, I forgot to reply). I re-added the removed material (though I kept the part about BLP issues). I agree that we need to be more clear on what does and doesn't count as one and what the difference is. I'm not really sure about what should or shouldn't count myself.PARAKANYAA (talk) 06:14, 20 August 2023 (UTC)

Page on Critical Criminology needs serious work on its reference section

Hello,

I'm not a member of this wikiproject (though happy to help with this), but came across a page that really concerned me: Critical Criminology. WikiProject Crime was listed in its tabs (which I am assuming is now this WikiProject).

The references throughout the body of the article are a mess. For example, the section on Conflict Theories has a sentence that begins with:

" Drawing on the work of Marx (1990 [1868]); Engels, (1984 [1845]); and Bonger (1969 [1916])..."

None of these sources are in the references section. I can be reasonably certain which works by Engels and Bonger the original editor is referring to, if I search on Google or another website their names and those dates, but to the best of my (pretty well informed) knowledge, Karl Marx never published anything in 1868.

The article is riddled with citations like this. I chose an example that included two famous authors, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, but most of the authors in these citations are not figures a reader would be familiar with.

While I admit I'm not the most knowledgeable about Wikipedia citation policies, nor the style guide for WikiProject Crime and Criminal Biography, this seems like a really severe problem to me. The article relies heavily upon citations that are incomplete, and the reader is not given anyway to find out who is being referred to exactly.

I'm potentially able to help track down some sources, but I don't feel comfortable spearheading this, and I also wonder if simply adding those citations is not the answer. Rewriting the article is definitely outside of my wheelhouse. JapanOfGreenGables (talk) 04:59, 5 September 2023 (UTC)

The article as a whole has many, many problems (particularly being written like an essay instead of an encyclopedia) and probably needs an overall rewrite but I can definitely fix the citation issue (when it comes to the stuff already in the page that is, it probably needs more citations) might take me a bit though
Crime is my main interest, but not so much Marxist theory which this seems to be a branch of, so me rewriting it beyond the citations would maybe not be for the best. PARAKANYAA (talk) 05:37, 5 September 2023 (UTC)

WikiProject image

This is pedantic and probably doesn't matter all too much, but since the WP banner templates are getting merged and I'm trying generally to clean stuff up, might as well say it now. The image this wikiproject uses on its page (and on the wp crime template) is almost the same as the one that WP:LAW uses, which is somewhat confusing, especially when one article is tagged with both wp crime and wp law.

I've temporarily changed it from the scale of justice image to Arrest.svg (which is already in use on the criminal biography template), but I'm not sure if that's overall a good representation of "crime". Maybe it is, not sure. I think a good idea would be a fingerprint, maybe. That has a sort of forensics-criminology connotation better than the scale does, which is more law-related. PARAKANYAA (talk) 06:32, 18 October 2023 (UTC)

@PARAKANYAA: I noticed the change but haven't considered to comment upon it until now. Having worked with banners using this icon for over a week, now, I have grown used to it. Nobody else seems to have objected to your bold change, and I can see the logic in keeping the icon as it is already used in relation to the name "Crime and Criminal Biography". I had thought that having icons that changed depending on the banner attributes might be a good idea, but since there is an issue with "Brand confusion" with WP:LAW, keeping the well-known icon is probably a better compromise. I am trying to think of a better icon to use but nothing obvious springs to mind.
The problem with using a fingerprint icon is that the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa already uses it as their logo, and they are not the only ones i have come across, so there is a risk of brand confusion with the real world. While a fingerprint might be recognizable as a forensics icon, it might not be for crime more generally. At this time, I am inclined to say: "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"! - Cameron Dewe (talk) 03:06, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, I agree. It seems an okay image for crime overall, and it's not close to any of the other WikiProject banners (which was my major gripe with the old one). I liked the idea of having the icons change as well, but AFAIK every other project that has something like that has a specialized task force or subproject for it - for example, the WikiProject Death banner changes images when the suicide task force is used. I couldn't find a way to have the image change without a task force parameter, and even then I didn't know what other image to use. There is no specialized task force for biographies in this project, it's all just one project, and re-separating them out after so long would be a bit of a nightmare. So yeah I think the new status quo is good. PARAKANYAA (talk) 09:06, 28 October 2023 (UTC)

Converting WikiProject Organized crime and WikiProject British crime to task forces of this project

As was brought up by Cameron Dewe in the merger discussion for the Serial Killer task force WP banner (which has now been closed as merge), it would be a good idea for WikiProject Organized crime and WikiProject British crime to be converted to task forces of this project.

British crime is an inactive project so I don't think there are going to be complaints. If they ever get any editors who would like to revive that then it's more effective for them to come here.

Unsure how Organized crime's editors would feel about it, but it doesn't seem to be a very active project at all and as WikiProjects generally are less active now than in the past, and there is near total overlap of their scope with our scope, I don't think it will hurt.

Making both task forces of this project defined by parameters in the template would be good IMO. No idea how to go about asking for those projects to be converted into task forces, though. PARAKANYAA (talk) 06:04, 12 October 2023 (UTC)

@PARAKANYAA: The last time there was a reply to a question on the talk page of WikiProject British crime it was in response to a question about a possible merger. And I was the only one to reply, then. So, if you are going to merge the project I would recommend pinging all the users who have said they were members and see if there is any response. This was not done last time the proposal came up and the project template was deactivated due to a lack of response, prior to my reply. There are a couple of thousand articles associated with the British crime project banner. You could use the standard Merge template.
I would suggest doing the same with WikiProject Organized crime. However, the way this project has been set up, it looks like it was previously a taskforce of the original Criminal Biography project that was not carried over into the current project. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 07:32, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
Makes sense. Is there any specific way to ping all the users of a WikiProject or do I just manually go through the member list? I'm not opposed to doing that I just don't want to annoy anybody, haha. There's also Wikipedia: WikiProject Australian crime which is not a large project and seems mostly inactive (same rationale as British crime). Nevermind, I'm an idiot that's a sub project of WP Australia I think. If that seems like a good idea then I can do that.
Also, complete pedantry at this point, do you think it would be a good idea to simply rename the WikiProject back to "WikiProject Crime"? From what I can tell it was initially called that way back in '06 before it was merged with "Criminal Biography". Criminal biographies are inherently a subset of crime as a whole, and while a very useful distinction to make I don't think it necessary for the project itself to be titled such. Given the usage of task force parameter on the banner template with regard to criminal biographies (hoping that they properly merge the templates, anyway...) seems clearer and I think it's simpler that way. PARAKANYAA (talk) 07:48, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
@PARAKANYAA: Template:Ping group looks like a possibility, as it allows a group of users to be pinged without their names being displayed; the list option suggest more than 10 users can be pinged at one time. Also the Template:Reply to, allows one to ping up to 50 users, but it mentions their names, or at least some of them.
I think it might be too confusing to just use WikiProject Crime. While simplifying the name would be a good strategy, long term, the current name is the result of merging two separate WikiProjects. I suspect that some people still have not got their heads around the merger, so there is a risk that the criminal biography aspect might be lost, or forked, if the name changes too much.
I think your concerns about WikiProject Australian crime can be handled in a different way. While that WikiProject is a task force of WikiProject Australia, a previous proposal to merge it into WikiProkect Crime has met with some resistance and opposition. And, as a New Zealander, I can understand and sympathize with my trans-Tasman neighbours, as it is a significant aspect of their history. I think it is simpler to just add the relevant articles to the Crime WikiProject, as some article within the scope of the Australian task force are outside the scope of the overall Crime WikiProjects. I have been adding the crime banner when I come across relevant articles, so over 700 Australian articles are already included in WikiProject Crime, which is about a third of all Australian crime articles. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 08:58, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
I am unbothered by WP Australian Crime being a task force of WikiProject Australia, it just seems too specific and too inactive to be its own thing, better off a sub project of something, whether it be WP Australia or WP Crime. I’d also be fine with WP British crime going under WikiProject United Kingdom but they don’t seem to really want it that way so hey. Organized crime is more clear cut, a weird orphaned-by-merge task force that turned into its own thing on accident and has had less activity since.
And fair point about the WP Crime thing. Maybe that could be solved with a task force for “Criminal Biographies”, but that seems too much and runs the risk of forking as you said.
While we’re on the topic of renaming things: “Serial killer” task force is an inaccurate name, as you pointed out. It covers all multiple murders (mass killers, spree killers, etc). The best rationale I could see for keeping it as serial killers is that “serial killer” is a better known term, but I think it’s too misleading for that to be justified. Case in point for the first several weeks of me editing crime articles I thought it was exclusively used on articles for serial killers and not mass killers which lead to me erroneously removing it and then having to add it back in. But mass killer isn’t quite right either (though I think it’s a bit better than serial killer in this context). What’s the best one? Multiple murder task force? Not as snappy. None of these are ideal, really.
Sorry if I’m bugging anyone with my maintenance stuff it’s just a lot of WikiProjects aren’t the best maintained, WikiProject Crime included, and I want this to be the most useful it can be so we can make better articles and organize to help articles in dire shape :D PARAKANYAA (talk) 09:54, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
@PARAKANYAA: Keep on bugging everyone. It is the only way to make changes and improve. I see two threads in the "Serial killer" task force, one is the criminal biography aspect of Serial Killers and Mass Murderers, then there is the single event notability of "Mass Killings". The dividing line is quite stark and I have often wondered if there needs to be a separate "Multiple or Mass Killing" task force to distinguish between the biographies and the events. Also, this task force seems to be the default go to WikiProject for every terrorist related killing in the world, when people are avoiding using the term terrorist when applying MOS:TERRORIST. There is also a scope description conflict between the banner, which says "... serial killers, mass murders, spree killers ..." and the task force scope, which says "...to serial killers, mass murderers, and spree killers ..." The single word change causes huge confusion and results in people removing the banner from articles that they believe are outside the scope of the project, based on the name of the task force, rather than its scope. I think we need to split the Serial Killer task force by applying the logic of WP:BIO1E. Serial Killers, and spree killers, are notable because they commit multiple crimes that kill multiple people. They are notable as criminals because they commit multiple events. Mass murders or mass killers are not, because they kill multiple people in a single event, so we write about the the deaths, killings and murders as an event, not about the perpetrator with a biography. Besides, if a person commits two or more mass killing events they become a spree killer or [mass] serial killer. This split follows the same logic as for having Crime and Criminal Biography as separate branches of the one WikiProject. I have previously discussed this with the task force, in a couple of discussions that are now archived, but we never managed to resolve the issue. I suspect the issue cannot be solved effectively, because of the fundamental differences between the types of articles one needs to write. Serial/Spree killers is primarily a biography. Mass Murder (and mass murderers) are either articles about a single event, or crime that is so monstrous it doesn't get called crime any more and becomes an atrocity or even genocide because it transcends the law of the land, or people in positions of power make it legal for them to do such things. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 11:14, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
@PARAKANYAA: Thanks for your continuing efforts on this merger. I like the changes you have made to the banner templates, so far. This has identified over 750 articles that are members of the task forces but not a member of the Crime and Criminal Biography WikiProject. Another 7,500 odd articles appear to have duplicated banners that need merging. I notice that you have enlisted the help of a bot to help with adding task force attributes. I think this is a good idea to assist with the banner clean-up and would suggest that its use be expanded to assist where the importance attribute of Crime and Criminal Biography articles is already known from an existing banner. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 05:08, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
@Cameron Dewe Sorry for my late response to both of your comments (and the rest I have not answered yet on this page), I was trying to formulate my thoughts.
The distinction between a general mass murder and a terrorist act can be kind of blurry, especially given lone wolf terrorists often have personal problems as partial motivations much like random mass killers. I think the thing that is in WikiProject Terrorism's scope that is specifically out of our scope is say, state actor terrorism or terrorist groups (this does not stop people from tagging those as crime though...) I'm on the side that lone wolf terrorist killers and their acts are still a subset of mass killer and are in scope.
I was going to change it to "Multiple Murder task force" or something but I feel like that would confuse people even more. The problem with renaming the task force is the problem generally with discussing mass/serial/spree killers, which is 1) that different jurisdictions have different definitions of each of those terms and 2) from personal experience on and off Wikipedia the average person does not know the difference between a mass killer and a serial killer, much less a spree killer (which somehow has an even less consistent definition than the prior two terms). Especially with older cases, serial killers will be called mass killers and vice versa - this still happens today, but less. The distinction isn't very clear in practice, and a lot of people tend to view mass killers as a subset of serial killer or vice versa
I feel like it isn't worth the effort to make an extra task force just to solve what is just a naming problem - this WikiProject as a whole is already not the most active, much less the task force. WikiProjects are first and foremost venues to collect editors to work together on topics they're interested in, and subdividing a small task force of a small project is splitting that, which is not useful IMO
To try to fix this I changed the scope of the Serial Killer task force a while ago to make it clearer that mass murder and mass shooting articles are in the scope of the project both when they're about the event and in the rare cases where the article is on the perpetrator (which happens sometimes if rarely, mostly with older cases or especially complicated ones). I also explained the definitions, which should hopefully help a tiny bit with people's confusion.
I did not actually do the bot, I believe that was a different user. I've cleaned up a few of the duplicates myself but yeah that's a lot. I'll see if I can find a bot that would be good to fix that. PARAKANYAA (talk) 08:09, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
@PARAKANYAA: I don't think you have really changed the scope of the Serial Killer task force, merely clarified it. Now you point it out, I agree that making the task force smaller is likely to be more confusing than beneficial and people will just have to deal with it. I agree that Terrorism is a bit of an outlier as far as crime is concerned, and each article that comes up probably needs to be assessed on a case by case basis to say if it was treated as crime or some form of military activity. So, yes, the "Lone Wolf" terrorist is in, but military-like actions are not, while the in-betweens could go either, or even both, ways depending on the circumstances. I think provided one or the other WikiProjects cover the article it is enough. I have notices some of the articles are being cleaned up. Rather than discuss what I think need to be done, here. I think I will start a discussion on the relevant template documentation page about "How to fix duplicated banners." - Cameron Dewe (talk) 09:14, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

Exclusion of Police and other Law Enforcement agencies

The scope of this WikiProject includes the statement that: "Crime and criminology related subjects can range from specific areas, geographical locations, and historical periods as well as overlap with other subjects such as WikiProject Law and Law Enforcement." However, I think this statement is somewhat misleading. While I see criminologist and criminology related subjects as being candidates for inclusion in WikiProject Crime and Criminal Biography because they study crime and criminals, and laws about crimes as also being candidates. I don't see articles about policing and law enforcement organizations as candidates for this WikiProject. The Peelian principles explain that the role of the police is to prevent crime and disorder. Although a police service or force might investigate crime, and individual police officers might commit crime, the ultimate goal of a police service, itself, is for crime to be absent from the community it polices. While the police might play a significant role in certain criminal related events, the police service itself is not inherently a criminal related organisation, but a law enforcement one. Also, the scope of WikiProject Law Enforcement explicitly excludes "... Crime and criminology, sociology, law, and similar topics ..." that might still be related to police work but are more about wider social issues. Thus major criminal investigations or operations by police or law enforcement agencies are not law enforcement articles, but crime articles. This project should have a corresponding statement that explains what the overlap with WikiProject Law Enforcement includes and excludes. As a start, it should exclude Police and Law Enforcement agencies and related articles, except those that document criminal related wrongdoing by police and law enforcement, because those might be excluded from WikiProject Law Enforcement. Thus, while an article about a policing agencies might be excluded, articles about the policing agency involved in a death in police custody or a crime related article perpetrated by individual police officers would be included. I have recently started discussions about this issue at Talk:Cornwall Police Service and Talk:James Holland (Texas Ranger) about inclusion of these articles in this WikiProject. While I believe articles about Police services and similar law enforcement agencies fall outside the scope of WikiProject Crime and Criminal Biography, I am less certain about police officers who are criminologists, so would welcome some input from others. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 06:43, 28 October 2023 (UTC)

@Cameron Dewe I think it goes something like this (or at least this is how I've been interpreting it while editing)
Criminology relating to broader societal issues is in our scope, not theirs. They only include "crime science theory and research" as it relates to law enforcement.
Specific law enforcement officers / police departments (unless they are individually notable for committing a crime) are in their scope not ours (however if a specific police department is known for corruption, does that make them in our scope? I believe so). If their work is simply in preventing crime they are not in our scope.
Crime cases that involve a notable incident of police misconduct or failure (stress on notable, to the degree of being a substantial aspect of the case) are in both scopes
I think the justification for James Holland's article being tagged with this project is that a major aspect of his notability seems not just tied to crime prevention more broadly, but specifically getting confessions from serial killers. Still, I'm not sure about how I feel with him being tagged here - but it's not completely baseless.
I'm not quite sure how the scope should be changed. I agree it is confusing. PARAKANYAA (talk) 09:24, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
@PARAKANYAA: I believe we are thinking broadly along the same lines. I too believe that, generally, articles about police and law enforcement agencies are out of scope of this WikiProject, except for wrongdoing related articles, such as corruption, committing crime or deaths and suchlike where the actions in a specific case come into question. I think the James Holland's article is an edge or borderline case because he is specifically noted for obtaining confessions from serial killers, so falls into the "and related" aspect of the serial killer task force. But his is a specific example of a Police officer who is also an expert in a specific area of criminology. However, his inclusion should not be used as an example that is can be applied to most police officers, who should normally also be excluded, even though they investigate crime. I am more ambiguous about Crime science theory and research. Where this primarily relates to law enforcement activities, it probably should be out of scope, but where it relates to understanding motives for criminals committing crime and interpreting the resulting criminal environment, it could be in, particularly where there is a clear relevance to a particular task force. I see the inclusion of borderline articles as needing some discussion to determine if they should be in or out. Which is why I have asked the question here. At this stage, I would suggest the project scope suggest that where editors are uncertain about which WikiProject to use, then an article's inclusion be discussed. The aim of the discussion would be to clarify any inclusion or exclusion principles in question and seek a consensus to include or not. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 10:26, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
@Cameron Dewe I think that is fair. PARAKANYAA (talk) 09:48, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

Conversion of Wikipedia:WikiProject Organized crime to task force of this project

If no one objects after I ping the members I'll do the conversion. No one has responded there for five years (my comment over there). Reading this there doesn't actually have to be a formal merge discussion, you just move the pages.

British crime I'll do in a bit because I'm not entirely sure what the best fate for that is, whether it be complete merge/task force here/task force on wikiproject uk PARAKANYAA (talk) 04:39, 17 October 2023 (UTC)

@PARAKANYAA: The way WikiProject UK seems to work is that they have separate WikiProjects for each UK topic, rather than having task forces. As a result, most of the British crime articles also have a regional UK WikiProject banner added too. Unlike WikiProject Australian crime, British crime does not have a set of populated categories that allow a robot to readily categorize and report on the articles by quality and importance. To me it makes more sense to make British crime articles a task force of this project because many of them also have a WikiProject Crime related banner, and any that do not, we still want to add a WikiProject Crime and Criminal Biography banner to them. If these articles are merged into WikiProject UK, the Crime relationship will likely be lost. In contrast, the Australian crime articles that are also members of WikiProject Crime and Criminal Biography can be compared, so one can identify the Australian crime articles that do not have a Crime and Criminal Biography banner. Also, the scope of WikiProject Australian crime is somewhat different to WikiProject Crime and Criminal Biography, so the Australian articles may need to be assessed individually, rather than included wholesale. This cannot be done with the British crime articles, so making these a task force, even if it is only a temporary one to rescue the banner assessments, makes more sense. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 04:29, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
@Cameron Dewe That is a fair argument, but the problem I have with it is that I don't think British crime is really that useful of a classification when it comes to us. It's not like the fact that it is in the UK is an inherently notable aspect of crime there- having an entirely independent project or task force of this project merely because it happens to have happened on British soil is odd. Seems like a very mislead reason to have made a WikiProject: its scope is defined not by its uniqueness or specification of a broader concept but merely by overlap of this project and wikiproject UK's. But then we're back to the question of what do we do with it? I just dislike the idea of making it a task force of this one. I suppose we could just flat out redirect its banner to this WikiProject and mark all its pages historical. PARAKANYAA (talk) 09:42, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
@PARAKANYAA: Now I think about it, a redirect should work. Anything that doesn't have an assessment will appear in the WikiProject log and in the assessment statistics table after the change is made, so there will be a record of the newly assessed articles. While anything that is already assessed for both WikiProjects will have a duplicated banner, which we can find by looking at the pages that link to the banner. Cleaning up the banner duplication should be a relatively benign activity because the class and importance setting will overlap each other and should not affect assessments significantly. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 10:03, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

Split proposal on Stanislav Markelov

I want to split off the section of the murder of Stanislav Markelov and lesser section on Anastasia Baburova into a combined article on the murder of both. I believe having it split awkwardly between the pages is confusing and prone to them desyncing. I have a draft here Draft:Murders of Stanislav Markelov and Anastasia Baburova do you think this is warranted?Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (talk to the cutest Wikipedian) 21:30, 3 November 2023 (UTC)

Seems like a good idea. Both appear notable enough independently and having information about their deaths split between both of their pages is awkward as you said. No objections. PARAKANYAA (talk) 18:37, 5 November 2023 (UTC)

I’m hoping somebody can assess my article

I’m a member of this WikiProject however I am unsure how to asses my own article and was hoping another member could assess it for me. The article is the Malmö school stabbing. Salutations25 (talk) 02:06, 3 November 2023 (UTC)

@Salutations25: I assessed it as start. You can assess your own article up to B class (though I'd recommend being cautious especially since you're new, I personally have never assessed one of my own articles above C). You can find the criteria here. To make it easier for others to assess it if you feel uncomfortable, add the WP Crime banner to the top of the talk page so it categorizes as an unassessed crime article.
Advice: I would recommend preparing more before you do GA nominations. Usually not the norm to do it right after you start an article, and if you're more wanting someone to give you critique on it that's not the place to put it. PARAKANYAA (talk) 20:51, 5 November 2023 (UTC)

Seeking Expertise on Notable Crime History at Portal Fernández Concha

Hello WikiProject Crime and Criminal Biography Community,

I'm reaching out to tap into your deep well of knowledge on crime and its societal impacts. I'm currently working on the Portal Fernández Concha article, a landmark that's not just an architectural gem but also a hotspot for some truly intriguing and notable criminal activities. These aren't your everyday misdemeanors; we're talking about events that have caught the eye of the national congress and even made their way to presidential resolutions.

Here's why I believe this is right up your alley and worth our collective time:

  1. Historical Significance: The crimes associated with Portal Fernández Concha aren't just footnotes. They've played a part in shaping public policy and have been pivotal in discussions at the highest levels of government. This intertwining of architecture, crime, and policy offers a unique lens through which to view the building's history.
  2. Public and Media Attention: Some of these incidents have been the subject of extensive media coverage, public debate, and even cultural folklore, making them a significant part of the social fabric surrounding the Portal. Understanding and documenting these can provide valuable insights into the societal impact of crime.
  3. Complex Narratives: The stories here are complex and layered, offering a rich tapestry for exploration. They're not just about the crimes themselves but about the reactions, the public discourse, and the changes they've spurred in both local and national contexts.
  4. Collaborative Opportunity: This is a chance to bring a nuanced, well-researched perspective to an article that sits at the intersection of architecture, crime, and social history. Your expertise could help ensure that the narrative is not only compelling but also accurate and balanced.

I'm reaching out to you not just for the depth of your knowledge but for your ability to tease out the threads that make these stories not just notable but essential reading for anyone interested in the societal impacts of crime.

I believe that with your help, we can craft a section of the article that doesn't just list crimes but tells the story of how those events have woven into the fabric of the Portal's history and its place in the broader societal narrative.

I'm eager to hear your thoughts and, hopefully, to collaborate on enriching the Wikipedia landscape with another meticulously detailed and engaging entry.

Thank you for considering this invitation to collaborate. I look forward to any insights or guidance you can offer.
