Template:Country data Nazi Germany

As I understand things the flag the current template shows is the flag of the National Socialist German Workers' Party with a centred disk but the National State flag had an off-centred disk. There should probably also be an option for the striped "Imperial" Flag.

It would be nice if there was at least an option for the national flag (personally I think it should be default and the NSDAP flag an option), could somebody who knows how these templates work take a look please?

How about using Country Data for {{Coat of arms}}?

{{Coat of arms}} could benefit enormously from the Country Data scheme I think. Do people here agree this is a good idea? Especially when it comes to the shifting arms of each country throughout the centuries (the arms of Spain, the UK and Sweden for example).

Obviously, heraldry as a means to identify geographical entities is a centuries-old tradition. For articles such as Siege of Vienna, it is probably more natural to show the national coats of arms than flags that may or may not have been used in the late middle ages.

If the CoA template is to be implemented in Country Data, then i hope we may get a consensus for having escutcheons only (with the possible addition of surmounting crowns for monarchies or mural crowns for cities etc.). This principle would ensure tidiness and visibility even at a low resolution, and does satisfy the rules of heraldry:

Huge achievement; useless at 20px
The escutcheon; equally valid, and details are visible at 20px

Allowing only for escutcheons to be displayed would also discourage people from adding national great seals for example, stuff that may represent countries but which are useless at 20px and therefore shouldn't be displayed in lists anyway. - Thanks. SSJ t 01:12, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Country data - alias parameter

I found elsewhere that  Utrecht was linking to Utrecht, the city, not to Utrecht (province). The flags are different, so it was clearly an error: therefore I fixed it. Then I found that it was a recent change and that the editor who did it made changes to 12 other templates. U.S. Navy "Don't Give up the Ship" Flag

Hello -

Could the various flag templates be made to work with the US Navy flag of the War of 1812's Battle of Lake Erie? My work around is this:

United States Navy or [[File:DONT GIVE UP THE SHIP flag.svg|24px]] [[United States Navy]]

but my sense is that there's a better way. Is there some place I need to display/discuss the image to facilitate this? For instance here: Flags_of_the_United_States_Armed_Forces or here: Flag of the United States Navy (going to do this anyway ☺ )

I would think syntax like {{navy|USA}} could grow to {{navy|USA|1812}}, which is also to say that {{navy|USA}} should pull from here: Jack of the United States. Thanks. JMOprof (talk) 07:42, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks...infobox military person is all over the place. "Allegiance" is usually flag of the era, but "Service" has been service flags, DoD departmental seals or other representations. I advocated above that the Jacks be used for the Navy, and I have placed such myself on a "roll my own" usage. JMOprof (talk) 01:03, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
I think that the main reason that the ensign is preferred is that when a ship is at sea, it is more likely to be flying the ensign than the jack. --Redrose64 (talk) 11:38, 27 June 2012 (UTC)

Flags for conlangs

A number of Constructed languages have flags. Can I add images of these flags to this project? -- Evertype·✆ 10:08, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

What would the flags be used for? These flag templates are mostly for national flags to represent countries, and we already have a problem of them being extended to other, inappropriate uses. (For instance, people using the St George's cross to mean "english language" or "english speakers"). Could you clarify how the flags would be used? bobrayner (talk) 10:19, 16 July 2012 (UTC)
At List of language regulators (for instance) there is a table which would be easier and quicker to read if the flags were used. They could also be used in various templates and other contexts used by the Conlang/Auxlang projects. -- Evertype·✆ 12:58, 16 July 2012 (UTC)
I think some of the existing flags in that list are symptomatic of problems we have with language and nationality; it's very easy to imply neat 1:1 relationships between state and language which do not really exist in reality. For instance, the table has a single row which includes flags of some (not all) Arabic-speaking countries but the single "regulator" it links to is a list of different organisations in different countries which each call themselves "Academy of the Arabic Language". Afrikaans, influenced by the Taalkommissie, is spoken in Namibia; but there's no Namibian flag in the table, which might mislead readers - but including a namibian flag would be even more misleading because most Namibian households prefer a different language. The second most common language in Wales is represented with a little welsh flag picture; the most widely spoken language in Wales does not appear in the table. And so on...
Paradoxically, I think conlangs are less likely to have problems like this because a conlang is likely to be developed and used by a far smaller group (or even just one person) and association of a flag with that group is much clearer - there's less scope for confusion with national boundaries. Gosh I hate it when people go in and delete stuff from tables without discussion. Why couldn't the flag refer to the place in which the language regulator has its offices? I reverted that massive deletion because there should be serious discussion about it. The table was friendly and useful and attractive with its flags! Flags are typically used to indicate languages, for instance, in the Mac OS keyboard menu. (I can send a screen shot if you're not familiar with that.)
In any case there are not many conlangs and many of them have flags. So, can I add images of these flags to this project? -- Evertype·✆ 17:49, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

South Korea's short name by IOC is just Korea while North Korea's is "DPR Korea". Examples are suggested in the notes above. The two men's table tennis teams from the two Koreas had a match at the 2012 Summer Olympics (see [[8]] and [9]), they are subtitled as "Korea" and "DPR Korea", respectively. (I was failed to take a picture from the TV screen.)

Alt text at IOC flags

Hello, folks! During these Olympics, I've found that the Template:FlagIOCathlete doesn't render any alternative text for the flag. This is unlike the Template:Flagicon, where the country name is shown. Can you add it? Thanks! --NaBUru38 (talk) 17:33, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

That's intentional, per WP:ALT. The icon is purely decorative, so should not have alternative text. Screen readers would render redundant country names, since {{flagIOCathlete}} already has the linked country code after the person's name. Similarly, flag templates that also render the country name (such as {{flag}} have no alt text for the flag image. Only {{flagicon}} renders alt text because the country name is not often adjacent to the image, or not present at all. (And this is also why it is always better to write {{flag|Country}} instead of {{flagicon|Country}} [[Country]], by the way.) — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 18:33, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

Taiwan/Chinese Taipei

Hi, is it possible to have Chinese Taipei flag variant for Taiwan and Republic of China templates ? It would be useful when Taiwan hosts international sport tournaments. because the country "Chinese Taipei" doesn't exist, on other hand IOC doesn't use Taiwan's flag. Hi, nothing really, but this template goes to Chinese Taipei. when we use this template for Taiwan/C.Taipei, as host nation for a sport event. like this it doesn't make sense because Chinese Taipei is not a country. but also I don't think we can use this one  Republic of China because IOC / International federations don't recognize Taiwan and this flag. personally I prefer using ROC template but with Chinese Taipei flag. currently I have a problem with a user about this page FIBA Asia Cup (and two more pages). you can check the revision history. I'm just trying to find a solution. I already had the opposite of this discussion with another user who convinces me that TPE flag is better for such pages. even if I let it go, another user will change it. what do you think in this case ? Well, I would say that "Chinese Taipei" isn't a nation, it is a team (whether that is the football, basketball, Olympic, etc. team). I don't see any reason why  Taiwan shouldn't be used for the host nation field of the infobox, and  Chinese Taipei is used for the team, in the same article. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 19:49, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

South Korea

Hi,

Now the flag icons of Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay and Romania are also not being displayed. There has been no recent change to these flags' image files. Does anyone know what is going on? Heitordp (talk) 12:35, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Some more information. I've tried this on a couple of different browsers, same result. Whatever this is, it's new: I regularly look at the international sports results but haven't seen this before. Perhaps those that _can_ see the flags can do so because of stored versions in their cache.
The image for Romania for instance points to

If I navigate there I see a message saying "it cannot be displayed because it contains errors".
If I do the same for, say, the German flag, I see the little German flag...

Chile's and South Korea's flags are GONE.

Flags of Chile and south korea are blank. the flags are from country data template from automatically generated from wiki. They can not be changed from users. so who can fix this?

Korea bias

Why does Template:Country data Korea link to SOUTH Koreas flag? Thats highly pov as its missing North Korea.

Also the wording for the Nazi Germany flag is pov. We dont use party names nor was the official state named Nazi Germany. Perhaps Third Reich is more neutral

  1. Template:Country data Korea displays the flag of the Korean Empire prior to 1910, and is the most appropriate image for a link to the Korea article. It is not the same image as the Taegeukgi used in Template:Country data South Korea. The "Korea" template is intended for use in articles such as Taekwondo, where the country of origin predates the modern Korean states. However, I also suspect that the template is misused, and many instances of {{flagicon|Korea}} should be changed to {{flagicon|South Korea}}, for example.
  2. I suggest you propose renaming the Nazi Germany article, instead of Third Reich being the redirect. If successful, then the country data templates can be renamed to follow the article names.
  3. The two standard country codes for Costa Rica are {{CRI}} and {{CRC}}, so you can use either of those template names if you wish. I have no idea what you are talking about with {{Cos}}; the page history of that template (deleted in 2008) indicates it was related to the cosine function. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 19:02, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

Flag of Palestine

Currently the Template:PSE redirects to Palestinian territories, however this is now the official flag of the State of Palestine, now a non-member state of the UN. In my opinion, we should replace "Palestinian territories" with "State of Palestine".Greyshark09 (talk) 07:32, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

Have the ISO changed the PSE to refer to something other than "Palestinian territories, occupied"? If you want to just show "Palestine" for the time being you could use {{flag|State of Palestine|name=Palestine}}:  Palestine CMD (talk) 02:50, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

{{Flagcountry}} uses a display name that is defined inside the template itself. For example, Template:Country data State of Palestine includes the combination of alias = State of Palestine and shortname alias = Palestine to render a link that is equivalent to [[State of Palestine|Palestine]]. Using the name parameter of {{flag}} accomplishes the same thing, but the display name of "Palestine" is now coded into the markup of the article(s) that use that construct, rather than coded into the markup of the template. I just think it's a better design to use the template, so that if anything needs to be changed, one edit to the template will update all the articles, rather than having to find and update individual articles. I'm a software engineer in real life, so I suppose that's why I find the template method more appropriate. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 21:53, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

"Come and Take It" flag

I added the Battle of Gonzales flag (a/k/a the "Come and Take It" flag) as a variant for the Republic of Texas. While it was never an official flag of the Republic, it does have some historical significance. (And, truth be told, I wanted to use the flag for WC2013.)  Guernsey and  Jersey

Their official names are the Bailiwick of Guernsey and the Bailiwick of Jersey, respectively, but the data templates with those names do not exist yet. I think the templates ({{Country data Bailiwick of Guernsey}} and {{Country data Bailiwick of Jersey}}) should be made and the full names should be added to the current templates ({{Country data Guernsey}} and {{Country data Jersey}}) as redirect aliases.

Sometimes use of the full names is useful. Both Guernsey and Jersey have the narrow and broad senses. For example, "Guernsey" indicates only the main island of Guernsey in a narrow sense and the whole Bailiwick of Guernsey including the main island,  Alderney,  Sark,  Herm, Brecqhou, etc. in a broad sense. Likewise, so does Jersey. Thus, when we use the full names, we can specify the broad meanings excluding the narrow meanings. --Wikipean (talk) 07:19, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

How do I find the list of countries and codes, to report a problem?

The code {{sbw|AHO}} produces a flag of the Netherlands Antilles. {{sbw|ANT}}renders that same flag, despite the fact that the List of IOC country codes shows ANT as the code for Antigua and Barbuda. {{sbw}} calls {{Country data}}, but both templates are very short. Assuming that this is a problem with a list of countries and codes, where can I find that list, to make appropriate changes? Thanks. Peter Chastain (talk) 22:29, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

The problem is that "ANT" is ambiguous—it was the ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 code for Netherlands Antilles (until Dec. 2010), but it is the IOC country code for Antigua and Barbuda. The decision was made about 8 years ago that the ISO codes have priority over the IOC codes when there is a conflict, so that's why Template:Country data ANT is a redirect to Template:Country data Netherlands Antilles. Use the ISO code or use the complete name for clarity (e.g. {{sbw|Antigua and Barbuda}}) if that helps; you're not forced to use codes with these templates. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 20:24, 25 March 2013 (UTC)

Mariana Islands

Use Template:Country data Northern Mariana Islands, with the letter ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country code "MNP". If you only want to display "Mariana Islands", use that as the name parameter with most flag template calls. Using Lua to draw 'sprites'

I scribbled up a Lua module Module:Sprite (see the talk page for a sample) which can take a graphics file containing many flags, and clip it to show just one of them. I don't know, but it is possible that using this technique within the flag template would speed display - see [10] [11]. The idea is that the browser loads ONE image resource for an article with 170 flags, and just processes it to yield each of the individual flags. The caveat is that this goes via the Wiki image display rather than simply clipping an img src, and I don't actually know that there will be any speed advantage at all. :(

Actually implementing it mostly faces the barrier of having someone find all the flags of each particular height (the width should always be the same) and tile them all together in a single file so that it is sanely possible to clip out individual flags correctly... Template:FlagiconLua started

Hi, I was looking for an excuse to try Lua in a template and, well, this weekend I have started working on Template:FlagiconLua. The protoype works so far:

The idea is to cover the same functionality than Template:Flagicon and allow a common approach to any Wikimedia project (or any MediaWiki for that matter) in any language. There are three pieces to look at:

  • Template:FlagiconLua is the easy part. Currently only takes one parameter for the name of the territory.
  • Module:Sandbox/QuimGil/Flagicon contains the logics to find the flag and the link according to the parameter introduced, including a translation if it's available.
  • Module:Sandbox/QuimGil/FlagTranslations contains the table of flags, organized according to the ISO 3166 structure. Projects must populate the empty values in the table with their locales. Now there are only territories by name, but at some point the 3 letter codes will be supported as well.

That's it. There is no need for subtemplates for each flag and all projects could have the same set of flags supported in exactly the same way by staying in sync with these 3 files.

You can see the flag icons in action at Module:Sandbox/QuimGil/FlagTranslations/doc. Place your mouse over the first flags (Afghanistan, Åland, Albania...). I still need to think whether the English version should also have the locales or we can save the work for the default where the name fot he flag and the article linked is the same. Your feedback is welcome, and you involvement too. What do you want to see working next? There is a potential of saving a lot of manual work while gaining a lot of consistency by using Wikidata data. For instance, given "Andorra" = wikidata:Q228, thanks to Wikidata existing data we could establish automatically the connections with the ISO codes, the flag in Commons and the translations for all Wikimedia projects. Alpha3 codes are now supported, and therefore the coverage of current versions of ISO 3166-1 flags should be complete. Going for subdivisions now, although I wish I could find a comprehensive list of flags of subdivisions currently supported by Flagicon. My initial motivation here is (apart from learning Lua) to simplify how flags are maintained at the Wikipedia in Catalan, which I guess corresponds to the needs of most of the projects in other languages. Please add the template and modules to your watchlist, and feel free to start there specific discussions about requirements or bugs. I will start documenting better the current implementation and immediate plans. I'm very happy to announce that Template:FlagiconLua has reached feature parity with Template:Flagicon!

  • Full names: {{FlagiconLua|Andorra}} gives
  • 2 letter codes: {{FlagiconLua|AD}} gives
  • 3 letter codes: {{FlagiconLua|AND}} gives
  • No border flag: {{FlagiconLua|Nepal}} gives
  • Direct fallback to Commons: {{FlagiconLua|Berlin}} gives without being listed at Module:Sandbox/QuimGil/FlagTranslations.
  • Nepal, Switzerland and Vatican City have a default size of 20x17px (for the rest it's 20x22px):
  • User defined sizes: {{FlagiconLua|Andorra|size=44px}} gives
  • Historical flags: {{FlagiconLua|Afghanistan|1901}} gives and {{FlagiconLua|Afghanistan|variant=1901}} gives
  • Labeled variants: {{FlagiconLua|United Kingdom|civil}} gives and {{FlagiconLua|United Kingdom|naval-RMAS}} gives
  • Variant / label flags not found in FlagTranslations return the Flag of None but still point to the right article: {{FlagiconLua|Andorra|naval}} gives

There are several paths for continuing the work:

  • Add country data at Module:Sandbox/QuimGil/FlagTranslations - help from editors is welcome. Technical skills required: 0.
  • Better code to handle exceptions (e.g. UK in addition to GB) and localization at all levels (e.g. "EUA" == "USA" in some Latin languages). See also the thoughts about creating a module just for localization, keeping editors away from the 3 master (English) files.
  • Include here the functionality of neighboring templates? It would be pretty simple to add parameters to cover the extra bits provided by flag, flagu, flagcountry and flagdeco. For what is worth Template:Flags is available...  :)
  • Testing & performance improvements - advice from Lua / templating experts is welcome.

And of course...

  • Find a customer!

Even if I'm cloning the functionality available in en.wiki and I'm reporting here, the logical first projects using this would probably be small ones without the resources to create and maintain all the subtemplates & country data pages you are using here to provide all the flags. They would be done copying 3 files as is and localizing the 4th according to their possibilities and needs.

I've decided to rename it: Template:Flags. And the plan (if I had one) has changed too: getting all the Flag* templates functionality in one place and make it easy for projects to add the flags data they need. About adoption, I will try to convince my colleagues at the Catalan Wikipedia to start testing with real articles. Currently their equivalent to Flagicon doesn't include a link to the article for the flag icons, which makes Flags an interesting alternative. There is also the simpler maintenance of flag data. A proposal to solve the problem with unequal height of rows

I propose to change the flagicon size from default 22x20 pixels to 24x15 pixels in the fully protected Template:Flagicon/core.
Here are two tables, the first one is default, the second one is my proposal with equal height of rows.

Equal height of rows is a good idea. Is the problem that in order to get the right aspect ratio the longish flags are not using the full 20 vertical pixels? The squarish flags look rather small at 15px. With higher resolution screens becoming so popular, 15px is pretty tiny. Could the rectangular flags instead be padded vertically to 20px and could the default width be enlarged to 24px without reducing the vertical number? Alternatively, is there a way to set the height of all of the rows in a table so that they would all be 20px even if some of the entries were vertically less than this? There is no guarantee that all rows will always be equal for all users. People with different font-sizes may still get different heights. That said, I think 22x16 would be a better choice. 24 is too wide for the 2:1 flags, and 16 is the normal line-height at default font-sizes. — Edokter (talk) — 17:06, 9 June 2013 (UTC)

  • See alternate proposal for height+spacing: For over 4 years, the recommended height of the Swiss flag icon has been x17px as inside {{CHE}}, which reduces the height from x20px but also retains a larger surface area to better match the other flags. Wikid77, unfortunately, it's not working. We should return to my initial proposal and edit the core templates of Template:Flag/core & Template:Flagicon/core. Only 0.1% of 350.000 articles will be affected - those with Swiss, Vatican and Nepal flags. To Anne: You're right, 15x15 px icons are relatively small, but with icon height over 15px, rows are already taller than default. Therefore I support Edokter's 22x15 px. 24x16px icons would be beautiful, but in that case it would be necessary to change the aspect ratio of United Kingdom Australia Canada Qatar etc. from 2:1 to 3:2 (or in pixels - from 24x12 to 24x16) because of keeping the height of rows. And that is not technically possible, is that???

  • Then using #if:{{{size|}}}... will set default: There is a bug/quirk with template parameters where a blank parameter overrides the default value. So "size={{{size|}}}" will disable the default in {{{size|20x17px}}}, and instead the markup must check for a blank parameter by using "{{#if:{{{size|}}}|{{{size}}}|20x17px}}" to set the default value.
By using "{{#if:{{{size|}}}|{{{size}}}|20x17px}}", then the default flag sizes will be set. However, there are still concerns that height x17px (   Switzerland/sandbox) is too high, and so perhaps using the 1-pixel shorter size, x16px, would fit better as "Switzerland" within a line of text. I do not see a problem with height x17px in Firefox browser, but does x17px upset the line spacing in other browsers? I think the spacing of superscripts, such as x2 (Switzerland x17px), should be compared before judging height x17px as unacceptable.   • Requested redo of Nepal/Swiss/Vatican flags: Since there has been no objection to the compromise sizes (17-16-16px) after 5 days, now I have submitted an {editprotected} request to set those as the 3 default sizes.

South Korea

See {{Country data South Korea}}. I know this is likely an issue at Commons (where the image File:Flag of South Korea.svg seems to have been redirected at some point to File:Flag of Republic of Korea.svg. When I look at the country data page, and when I look at an article using the flagicon template, the image does not render. I've refreshed my cache, to no avail. Is it just some issue with my browser and not with the site? Or is this something to fix? The optimal solution would seem to be to add the correct image name to the template - but that seems to be a big change. I thought it worth checking first. Templates on Palestine

Recently, the template:Country data Palestine was changed to reflect the upgrade of status for the State of Palestine (current ISO code "Palestine, State of" [12]), however template:Country data Palestinian territories was created in addition, instead of remaining a redirect to "Country data Palestine". I must emphasize that currently there are 3 flag templates: "Country data Palestine" (State of Palestine), "Country data Palestinian Authority" (PNA) and this newly created "Country data Palestinian territories" (Pt).

One however must notice that in fact Palestinian territories is a mute term which can have several meanings. The actual implementation of "Palestinian territories, Occupied" (used by UN between 1999-2012, see [13]) in previous ISO designation was in order to refer to the Palestinian National Authority existing 1994-2012 (see explanation here). Otherwise, if one is referring by "Palestinian territories" to the pre-1993 Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip, the use of PLO flag icon is of course unreasonable, as the flag was both illegal under Israeli law and unrecognized by UN/ISO.

I herewith propose template:Country data Palestinian territories template to return being a redirect and redirect to template:Country data Palestinian Authority, in accordance with the fact that ISO designation "Palestinian territories, Occupied" was in fact used for Palestinian Authority between 1999 and 2012.Greyshark09 (talk) 17:07, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Allowing variants on alpha-3 templates

The three-letter country code flag templates are very simple and useful ones, providing a quick call to the various {{flag|COUNTRY}} style templates. However, they all lack the ability to use a flag variant. For example:

I think most would assume the behaviour of these templates to be the same. As far as I'm aware, none of the three-letter templates use any parameters. Can we modify these templates so that if a parameter is fed in, it will then feed it into the variant part of the flag template? I presume I'm not the only person who would find this desirable. The old three-letter templates were the first flag templates to be created (in early 2005) before {{flag}}, {{flagcountry}} et. al. were developed later. At that time, we discussed deprecating the three-letter templates, mostly because the majority of country codes are obscure and wiki markup readability is vastly improved by using the full country name. That never happened, but I still think there is a preference to use {{flag}}. What are the advantages of having a country flag template which does call that country's flags? Furthermore, what is the advantage of having a quick-call template which does not allow full usage of the template it's calling? As I said (or inferred), the deprecation of the obscure three-letter templates did not gain consensus, so those templates persist. I am on the side of the fence that would rather see {{flag|Malaysia}} instead of {{MAS}} in markup since it's much more obvious to new editors what that means. Although I disagree with it, I can understand the argument for a "quick-call" template. Non-standard borders

To editor Andrwsc: (and all interested editors) – Since the border = parameter is able to eliminate the 1-pixel border for non-standard-shaped, non-rectangular flags, then let me suggest that this functionality be included in the Other common parameters section of this project page. Specifically, I would like to add the text:

If some of the flags are non-standard in shape, and a 1px border is undesirable, then the border may be defeated by the border = parameter:

|border-colonial =

Nothing should be added after the equal sign(s). See Template:Country data Poland for examples of this usage.

This addition comes as the result of an edit request on the talk page of Template:Country data Poland. Several hours of research did not yield this functionality either for me or for another template editor. We both experimented and the other editor was able to find a way to defeat the borders with the above information. Since neither of us could find this information documented and since this project page is referenced at {{Country showdata}}, it appears that this page is a good place to document the above functionality of the border = parameter. Yes, this project page is precisely the best place to document parameters used in country data templates. The documentation at {{Country showdata}} describes how to use that template to document individual country data templates. For example, the var1, redir1, and related1 parameters (which should all appear in a <noinclude> section if used) are all documented there because those parameters are used to add information to country data documentation. Only 15 variants?

Greetings, at the moment, if a flag template has more than 15 variants, only the first fifteen will show in the template's documentation and the remainder are not shown (see here for an example). Is there a way to make the documentation show all the variants instead of just 15? Is this just how the documentation works or is there an error in the template's coding that I'm just not seeing? Fixes to Template:Navy (and other flag templates)

Following a discussion here, I made a few changes to Template:Navy/core's sandbox. The changes fix problems with removing borders from nonstandard-shaped flags, enlarge flags without borders so that they appear the same size as flags with borders, and update the default flag size to match other flag templates per this discussion. I'd appreciate it if another pair of eyes would check that everything works before I implement the changes on the main template. I think it's a bad idea to include parser functions (#if in this case) in these flag templates, as they are frequently transcluded many times on the same page (hundreds of times in some cases). I recall that we've had some pages run into parser limits in the past, but I think some of those limits have changed over the years. It was an original design goal of the flag template system to avoid parser functions, but over time the original design has gotten bloated. The only parser limit I'm aware of is for expensive ParserFunctions, not #if. I compared the speeds of 1,000 translusions of Template:Navy with 1,000 transclusions of Template:Navy/sandbox, and Navy/sandbox only took .996 seconds longer than Navy, or about one thousandth of a second per transclusion. I don't think that's worth worrying over. A Lua replacement would certainly be better, but until that's written, I think this is a viable change. Thoughts? There is already a data template Template:Country data Aden; I've just created a redirect at Template:Country data Colony of Aden. Portuguese India doesn't appear to have had an official flag, though if necessary/wanted new data templates Template:Country data Netherlands New Guinea and Template:Country data Portuguese India could be created. Burma/Myanmar

Three years ago, a request to redirect Template:Country data Myanmar to Template:Country data Burma was declined by Andrwsc because of incompatibility of the latter with {{fb}}. Template:Country data Burma already contained a "|link alias-football=Myanmar national football team" back then, so {{fb|Burma}} works ( Burma), and the display name can be corrected using "|name alias-football=Myanmar". So is there any other reason why the templates could not be merged, and would anyone mind if I did so? SiBr4 (talk) 11:00, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

I think the sandbox version works. The "alias" value changes to "Myanmar" whenever |altlink= is used, which fixes most links for sports teams (the majority are redlinks either way). SiBr4 (talk) 19:03, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
@Andrwsc: While the linked articles are now correct in the sandbox, one problem I've found is with the displayed name. Most sports articles use the name "Myanmar", though some intentionally use "Burma" to refer to the country before the official name change in 1989. For example, List of men's national association football teams#New names describes the transition from Burma to Myanmar. Is it better to redirect one to the other anyway and use |name= where necessary, or to "semi-redirect" one and let the display name depend on the transcluded template (see the Myanmar sandbox and testcases)? In retrospect I'd say that's precisely why we kept both templates (instead of making one of them a redirect) per the 2011 request. Through my flag template work I found that not many of the WP:FOOTY editors knew about subtleties like the name= parameter, but would instead simply use {{fb|Burma|1948}} or {{fb|MYA}} as appropriate for the timeframe of the article. I'm not sure it's worth combining the two templates if it's going to break some existing articles and/or change the way editors are currently using these templates. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 20:32, 29 May 2014 (UTC)
@Andrwsc: If the current sandboxes are implemented it should not break anything or change their usage ( Burma vs.  Burma and  Myanmar vs.  Myanmar), but has the advantage of unifying the flag variants, and fixing the linked article name to "Myanmar" for sports and "Burma" otherwise. My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

Flaglink using prefix rather suffix..?

Hello. Is there a version of {{flaglink}} (or some switch I've missed) that creates a link by adding a prefix rather than a suffix to the country/region/etc name?

I'm thinking of instances such as "Agriculture in [place]", i.e. the creation of items such as

{{flagicon|India}} [[Agriculture in India|India]]

(If this doesn't already exist somewhere, I imagine some kind of switch to move the position of {{{altlink}}} in {{flaglink/core}} is what's desired.)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

"in France" but "in the United States" – use country data to correctly build the phrase

The autocreated links on the bottom of Template:Infobox political party could use some country data specifying, whether the article "the" is used in combination with the country name.
See the page Democratic Party (United States), where the created link reads "Politics of United States" which is of course wrong and only worked around by using a redirect to the correct article Politics of the United States. Same with 'List of political parties in United States' and 'Elections in United States'.
I can imagine that there are quite some more use cases, but this one IMHO is already relevant enough. Now how to do this best?

I'm tending to creating two intermediate templates to be used as follows: {{in country|Elections|United States}} → Elections in the United States and {{of country|Politics|France}} → Politics of France. The advantage of this approach would be that the template names are quite descriptive. On the other hand, there could arise a need for {{to country}}, {{from country}} or {{by country}}.
An alternative might be a single template to be used as follows: {{the country|Elections in|United States}} → Elections in the United States and {{the country|Politics of|France}} → Politics of France.

Next step would be to determine how to name and compose the entry in the country data templates. But first I'd love to get some feedback from you.

You could change the links in that article by setting |country= to "the United States" instead of "United States". A parameter like |the=the in country data templates needing the definite article can be useful for other templates as well though. SiBr4 (talk) 13:42, 16 December 2014 (UTC)

The proposal was to make the infobox use data templates and adjust them so they can automatically add "the". While I'm not sure changing the infobox to use data templates is necessary/advisable, "link-building" flag templates such as {{flaglink}} and {{flagof}} may also benefit from a |the= option. Exactly. Currently, {{Infobox political party}} doesn't use country data, but according to my proposal it should to avoid both incorrect links and incorrect display text. Why wouldn't it be necessary/advisable? Entering "the United States" in the template would be possible but neither usability-wise nor semantically advisable IMHO. And indeed, {{Flagof}} would profit from a |the= parameter as well. I'm a bit puzzled why there is opposition at all against a generic and quite basic aspect of country data while at the same time even quity edgy parameters exist for national soccer or badminton teams... --PanchoS (talk) 10:25, 18 December 2014 (UTC)
@PanchoS: Though I would support expanding the scope of the country data system to be able to provide other kinds of data, it is intended for flag icon templates only, which is why I am not sure it should be used to generate simple links without flag.
I added a "the" parameter to Template:Country data Philippines/sandbox for testing and created a test template that appears to work:

Could we have the naval flag variant of this template render as Royal Yugoslav Navy rather than Yugoslav Royal Navy? The standard English rendering in sources is Royal Yugoslav Navy. For requesting an uncontroversial edit to a template-protected page, the best way to get attention for the request is placing the request at the template's talk page and adding the {{TPER}} template, which causes the page to be added to a list of requests watched by many template editors. Historical flag icon for British Guiana

Can a knowledgeable editor please take a look at this icon image? It appears to be a distorted image, disproportionately longer (wider) than it is supposed to be. A quick comparison to similar period flags from Australia, Canada and other British Empire colonies suggests that there is something wrong with the proportions of this image. Thanks. Honestly, I don't think anybody here can help. I'd suggest either Wikipedia:WikiProject Heraldry and vexillology (although that WikiProject appears somewhat idle) or Commons:WikiProject Flags for issues relating to the flag images. It looks normal to me; the flag icon produced by {{flag|British Guiana}} renders as 23x11px, and the flag image File:Flag of British guiana 1919-1954.gif is 435x217px nominally (both very nearly 2:1). SiBr4 (talk) 17:26, 15 May 2015 (UTC)

City flags?

I see that the "Flag" template works for some cities (San Francisco, New York City, Houston, etc.) but not others (Seattle, Vancouver, etc.) How hard is it to make this template work for other cities? @Another Believer: To make e.g. {{flag|Vancouver}} work, create Template:Country data Vancouver with the code at WP:WPFT#Basic country data template structure and fill in the "alias" and "flag alias" parameters with the article name and flag file name respectively. Flag icon linking to flag article

Is there a way to have the flag icon with no name, and the icon linked to the article about the flag? {{flagicon}} does not allow overriding the link and {{flag+link}} puts the link after the icon. It would be useful in tables like States and territories of Australia#External territories, states and territories that have a "flag" column separate from the "territory name" column. jnestorius(talk) 16:12, 10 August 2015 (UTC)

No flag template of former Netherlands New Guinea

Nepal and Switzerland flags add extra space at beginning

I have noticed the the flag template for Nepal and Switzerland seem to be adding extra spaces at the beginning, at least when doing a copy and past from this page:

List of countries by GDP (PPP) per capita

I can't confirm it is the flag template, it is a guess. To replicate the issue, do a copy of the complete table and then paste into Excel. Sort by the country name and I notice that Nepal has two spaces before the name and Switzerland has one extra space.

It is; {{flag}} adds additional spaces between the icon and name for Nepal, the Vatican and Switzerland in an attempt to vertically align the country names. Though there is a new flag template that does that a lot better (with a fixed-width box around the image instead of n spaces between the image and the name), I'm hesitant to remove the extra spaces in Template:Flag/core since probably only a small part of country lists has been converted yet. Possibly inaccurate flags for the Qing dynasty

As mentioned in discussion in WT:WikiProject China#Where should the flag of the Qing dynasty be used?, there are differences between the flags shown on the Qing dynasty and the article on the flag of the Qing dynasty. I'm not experienced in these flag templates; it has been discussed that the version now seen in the templates, for example when called upon like so: Qing dynasty, though miniature, can be identified as the wrong version, at least per the discussion on the aforementioned talk page. Hungary country data 1957-1989

Hello. Don't know if this is the right place to ask, but it's worth a try. I noticed User:Csurla changing articles containing the Flag of Hungary 1957-1989 variant to the current flag, and asked why. They said that the 1957 variant was never official, and the Flag of Hungary article appears to confirm that, albeit without an inline source. Missing Nepal flag causing problems

List of countries by intentional homicide rate uses flag icons to represent each country, but the Nepal flag is missing. I replaced it but was reverted because apparently it "breaks row alignment at smaller text sizes" (see the talk page discussion). Can someone please advise on what we should do? Kingdom of Denmark includes categories

Template:Country data Kingdom of Denmark ( Kingdom of Denmark) is sending its categories to the article whenever it is used (i.e. Nuuk includes Category:Country data templates of countries and others). Don't want to risk breaking it by editing a much used template, so can someone from this project have a look at it? –OZOO 10:32, 20 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi SiBr4, and thanks for the ping.
These categories are populated with articles. See for example Category:Country data templates of countries, which currently contains 635 pages, most of them articles.
However, the categories are clearly not intended to assist navigation, so they should be hidden from ordinary view in articles. I would strongly object to unhiding the categories unless they are depopulated of articles. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 20:45, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
None of the categories should contain articles; they are intended to assist navigation between the templates. The articles they contain are there due to the just-fixed Denmark template having had non-noincluded categories, and will be gone after the job queue is cleared. No Army Flags

Problem has been reported by a user that using the Template:Army it returns the country name rather than the actual name for example  Spain Army rather than Spanish Army because there is no entry in the country data page.
