Holy Roman Empire articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

Interest in making a HRE portal

Is there anyone here that would be interested in making a portal for the HRE? I do realize the confusion of the HRE as a whole, and a lack of people who could be included in this portal, but can't because of Location's concern. I've been trying to find reliable sources online, but they're in short supply without money. I will attempt to go to the library whenever I get the chance to help expand, but I'm considered a novice compared to others due to my recent surge of edits, and length of time being an editing Wikipedian. Holy Roman Empire Article Scope

When composing the Recognized Content and Articles in Need of Improvement sections on the project page, I encountered many articles not strictly about former countries of the Holy Roman Empire. Does the scope of this task force go beyond what the WikiProject Former countries covers, including all biographic pages of figures significant to the HRE? Or should the WPFC banner be removed from all pages that are not about or contain a section about a former country? If so, I will gladly remove them to refine this task force's to-do list.

No, we should add significant people, too. I don't know why Maria Theresa (among others) were removed from the scope of the HRE task force. Cities, People, and Events, and Places should be listed on the scope of the HRE task force. I think there was nothing wrong with the scope of articles before the removal of the GA and B class articles (except maybe the Pomeranian). Do you know who removed those articles? I didn't receive a reply, so I decided to restrict to the scope that was stated at the top of the project page. Sorry about that; I'll undo those edits right away. But, as we are a part of the WikiProject Former countries, I think that we should only be focusing on former countries. I've changed my mind, LeftAire; I don't oppose keeping significant people anymore. As for the Pomeranian, I'm definitely removing that, as it is not relevant to the WikiProject. Anyway, speaking of the scope, there seems to be a lot of other articles that involve wars. I suggest we draft standardized rules for determining which people, wars and former countries are authorized to be a part of the task force.--Xuxalliope (talk) 03:14, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

LeftAire, Do you realized how EVERY "Cities, People, and Events, and Places" in the past had been tied with a specifically former country? Some of them with two, three or four? Counties Requested

They weren't. They were Duchies. Franconia had no overall leadership for most of its history; there are indications of a family of duces in the 7th and 8th centuries, and Conrad I appointed his brother, Eberhard, dux, but after Eberhard rebelled against Otto I, there is no further record of a Duke in Franconia until the title was bestowed upon the Bishops of Würzburg by Barbarossa. The Swabian ducatus collapsed after the extermination of the Staufer (although it had already become fragmented prior to this, with the rise of the Zähringer and the acquisition by the Welfs of territory in eastern Swabia, leading to a three-way power struggle for dominance between those two houses and the Staufer). Perhaps this is a reference to the Counts-Palatine (Palsgraves or Pfalzgrafen)? Franconia didn't have one, but Swabia did; Friedrich von Büren, Barbarossa's grandfather, held this title before he was appointed Duke of Swabia by Henry IV after Rudolf of Rheinfelden rebelled. It doesn't appear to have been used again until 1146 (although Benjamin Arnold claims, without evidence, that it was held by the Counts of Dillingen prior to that), when the Counts of Tübingen were given the title, which, as with most German titles, to quote Charles Crowley, "became attached as an honorific to the name of the geographical base of the family who bore the title from time to time." It's also possible that the request is for the various comital houses in those provinces. Masque (talk) 23:30, 14 February 2019 (UTC)

New articles of the month

I've arranged for the 'Article of the Month' on the portal to change every month on an annual cycle. This means it gets refreshed regularly without any maintenance. Problems with Infobox in County of Oldenburg

The creation date seems arbitrary. It appears to be based upon a Comes Egilmarus witnessing a charter in which Archbishop Liemar of Bremen confirmed a donation in 1091, but this Egilmar did not hold the title "Count of Oldenburg." Even if we wished to anachronistically call him that, however, he was surely alive before 1091; indeed, Egilmar is mentioned in the Historia Monasterii Rastedensis as filius sororis comitis Hunonis, i.e., son of the sister of one Huno, who according to MedLands[1], "Historia Monasterii Rastedensis names 'Huno comes,' specifies that he held `comitibus Rustringie,` [and] founded the church in Rastede '1059 III Id Sep.'" It does seem clear that, by the time the title comes into use, the dynasty's patrimony in the area had been well-established, so it's not a horrible anachronism to use 1059, if we don't arbitrarily select some time in the 12th century.

However, there's another issue, to wit, the "breakup of Saxony." Understanding Saxony in this period as a unitary entity (as, indeed, is the case with any feudal polity of this period) is completely anachronistic. Although the Liudolfing Dukes could arguably be said to have controlled it, Otto I. created a military command in eastern Saxony in 936, when he appointed Hermann Billung "princeps militiæ" (you'll note that they did not use the title dux), and a number of frontier commands under other nobles (e.g., the Nordmark, which eventually became Brandenburg; Meissen; etc.). Westphalia was still part of the Krongut, and administered by various other nobles, including several prelates. Having said that, one could call this a period of relative integrity, particularly since the Billungs managed to accumulate significant possessions in the area. Does this refer to Magnus Billungs' imprisonment for participating in Otto von Northeim's rebellion against Heinrich IV. in 1070? I'm aware of no evidence that this resulted in a breakup of the Billung patrimony; Magnus was allowed to inherit his father's title even while he was imprisoned for over a year, and was never deprived of his title in spite of being repeatedly imprisoned and even joining Rudolf von Rheinfelden's rebellion. The only event that closely approximates a breakup that is within reasonably proximity to 1091 is Magnus' death in 1106 (note that this occurs over a decade later), when the Billung patrimony was divided between the Welfs and the Askanier (later the ruling house of Brandenburg), but Lothar von Süpplingenburg fairly quickly established dominance after this, so even that doesn't really make sense. To this end, I suggest either that the creation date be changed to "before 1059" and reference to the "breakup of Saxony" be removed, or, because the Grafen von Oldenburg did not really enjoy Reichsuntmittelbarkeit until the actual breakup of the Saxon ducatus as discussed above, the creation date be changed to 1180. --Masque (talk) 03:53, 12 February 2019 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Naming for HR Emperors vs HR Empresses?

I was looking at a few articles on Holy Roman Emperors, and I noticed that the article titles seem to include their ranks in the name example Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor. However the articles on the Empresses don't seem to follow this standard example [[[Maria_Theresa]], nor do articles on other dignitaries including Elizabeth II or Naruhito. There doesn't seem to be any guidance on this in the manual of style. Sephiroth storm (talk) 06:17, 19 April 2020 (UTC)

Hi, I'm trying to do a series of "cultural depictions" pages for at least the major leaders. I've already done two, both Habsburg:

If we have some more articles, a template can be created to link them all together. I intend to do Barbarossa next (as that article already has some stuff about his legends), and then maybe Frederick II. If any of you want to help or give recommendations, please do so.
