United States Coast Guard Auxiliary

I started the WP:WikiProject United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and I am having difficulty with finding new members to contribute to pages pertaining to the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.

I am of the opinion that the creation of the following articles would be beneficial: History of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, Notable United States Coast Guard Auxiliarists, Awards and decorations of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Interpreter Corps, Director of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, United States Coast Guard Auxiliary National Commodore, Missions of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, United States Coast Guard Auxiliary National Executive Committee, and the Coast Guard Auxiliary Association.

Expansion/improvements to these pages:United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and Uniforms of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary would also help.

Any assistance to support this project will be greatly appreciated. COASTIE I am (talk) 13:52, 28 December 2017 (UTC)

List of police complaints authorities

I've just converted the former Police Complaints Authority disambiguation page into a new List of police complaints authorities. I'm sure there are articles I've missed off the list because I was unaware of them and there may be some entries that I've misunderstood and don't belong. Please can you evaluate, correct, expand and improve. Thanks. Thryduulf (talk) 22:03, 20 January 2018 (UTC)

Law Enforcement vs Law enforcement

Just noticed this issue with several law enforcement related articles and category pages. This project capitalizes the 'E' in enforcement, however there is a mix of capital 'E's and lower-case 'e's when people are adding templates to articles and even when creating category pages. I posted a comment about this at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Capital letters where this is currently several on-going discussions related to this. The comment I posted is here. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   10:58, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

Lists of officers killed in the line of duty

Does WPLE have a specific guideline regarding the adding of content related to officers, etc. killed in the line of duty to police department articles. I've seen some examples like Los Angeles Police Department#Fallen officers, New York City Police Department#Fallen officers and Houston Police Department#Fallen officers where there's a combination of prose and table of "causes of death", etc. and even just prose like in Chicago Police Department#Fallen officers, but lists of individual officer killed are reserved for WP:SALs like List of Los Angeles Police Department officers killed in the line of duty. I came across Royal Canadian Mounted Police#Fallen Members after seeing Talk:Vancouver Police Department#Fallen Members and I'm wondering whether it would be better to WP:SPLIT that list of names off in to its own article or if it's OK as is in the main article about the RCMP. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:19, 10 July 2018 (UTC)

The Scope section on the project page only displays a question mark ie:

Does this mean the project has no scope or it hasn't been settled? What is the status of the page Wikipedia:WikiProject_Law_Enforcement/Scope? It would be helpful if a brief list appeared on the main project page so that contributors could get a general understanding of what the project will and will not cover. Nomination of Portal:Law enforcement for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether Portal:Law enforcement is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The page will be discussed at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Portal:Law enforcement until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the page during the discussion, including to improve the page to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the deletion notice from the top of the page. North America1000 09:38, 27 April 2019 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

New infobox law enforcement unit - feedback

I've created a new infobox Template:Infobox law enforcement unit for use on units that make up a law enforcement agency. I am seeking feedback on the design specifically the data fields. Editors had been trying to make do with either Template:Infobox law enforcement agency or Template:Infobox military unit for law enforcement unit articles. The infobox data fields are a combination of relevant data fields from the two infoboxes. The infobox has a one new data field subunits that can be used for example for sections or teams of a unit. The infobox has a similar layout as Infobox military unit including the colour.--Melbguy05 (talk) 03:04, 29 July 2020 (UTC)

Update to peer review page

Hi all, I've boldly updated your project's peer review page (Wikipedia:WikiProject Law Enforcement/Peer review) by updating the instructions and archiving old reviews.

The new instructions use Wikipedia's general peer review process (WP:PR) to list peer reviews. Your project's reviews are still able to be listed on your local page too.

The benefits of this change is that review requests will get seen by a wider audience and are likely to be attended to in a more timely way (many WikiProject peer reviews remain unanswered after years). The Wikipedia peer review process is also more maintained than most WikiProjects, and this may help save time for your active members.

I've done this boldly as it seems your peer review page is pretty inactive and I am working through around 90 such similar peer review pages. Please feel free to discuss below - please ping me ({{u|Tom (LT)}}) in your response.

Cheers and hope you are well, Tom (LT) (talk) 00:53, 15 November 2020 (UTC)

Adding Cory Burkus

you guys need to add Cory Burkus the police officer. ArekSmith (talk) 17:46, 6 December 2020 (UTC)

"you guys" "you guys need to". *sigh*.
Wikipedia editors are not The Other. Wikipedia is made up of volunteers, we are all people who create content and who collaborate and who come to an agreement about that content by gaining a consensus. So all the editors edit and contribute according to their interests working within WP rules/guidelines/the 5 Pillars/principles. To say that a WikiProject needs to add a single individual is basically saying a group made up of volunteers must do something. Because you want it to be so. I'm sorry but it doesn't work that way around here.
So there are questions: No indications from yourself about who or what this Cory Burke is. Is this Cory Burke notable enough for an article? He seems to be a police officer, but looking at Google search results I see no clear evidence of notability (plus general notability guidelines come into play as well). So, where are you thinking this person should be added? If he's not notable enough for an article, why should he be added and where? In the interest of keeping this discussion complete I do need to mention that Draft:Cory Burkus is being considered for deletion, see the discussion at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Draft:Cory Burkus. User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Neutrality

Ironically, the section talking about neutrality is not very neutral. Instead of saying "This means that they must not be written from a liberal perspective that is unsympathetic to cops..." You could just as easily say "This means that they must not be written from a conservative perspective that is sympathetic to cops, if not full of positive bias towards them, or from the opposite perspective."

IMO you should just get rid of the sentence. It uses US culture war terminology in what's supposed to have a neutral, global perspective. Sativa Inflorescence (talk) 14:54, 26 November 2022 (UTC)

I would appreciate if editors familiar with police department articles could assist at Winnipeg Police Service. An editor has reverted an edit to the "Criticism" section which appears WP:UNDUE, WP:IMPARTIAL, and poorly source. Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 10:14, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

I took a look at the material in question and personally think it's mostly OK. Some of the language could be toned down a little, e.g. "In 2022 and 2023, the Winnipeg Police Service faced widespread criticism" could drop the word "widespread"; and "The allocation of Winnipeg’s municipal budget towards the Winnipeg Police has drastically increased since the year 2000. While the Winnipeg Police consumed 17 percent of the City’s total operating budget in the year 2000, by 2020 this had risen to over 25%" could be improved by shortening to "The allocation of Winnipeg’s municipal budget towards the Winnipeg Police has increased from 17% since the year 2000, to 25% in 2020." Furthermore, the section on Justice 4 Black Lives Winnipeg's petition could benefit from some independent references acknowledging its creation, or better still any results / response from the authorities. But otherwise, the section uses a number of local and national sources that seem reliable - and I did search WP:RSN and WP:RSP. Conclusion - it needs some wordsmithing and a couple of additional references but I don't think the whole section merits deletion. 10mmsocket (talk) 11:32, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
Part of the article is sourced by the following, which I had to list using "nowikis" because one or more are blacklisted:
  • https://winnipegpolicecauseharm.org/blog/history-of-wpch/ - personal blog called "Winnepeg Police Cause Harm".
  • https://twitter.com/WpgPoliceHarm/status/1632444277769793539 - Twitter feed from "Winnepeg Police Cause Harm".
  • https://www.change.org/p/the-city-of-winnipeg-justice4blackliveswinnipeg-s-demands-to-make-winnipeg-safe-for-all-bipoc - an online petition.
And the conclusions reached from the reliable sources seem a WP:SYNTH. Magnolia677 (talk) 15:12, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
And after removing the blacklisted sources, Twitter feeds and biased blogs...my edits were reverted by User:10mmsocket. Magnolia677 (talk) 18:23, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
Yes they were. You came here for advice and to see consensus and then go ahead and revert a bunch of content without waiting for replies either from me or from other people. It's not a race. It's not a problem that needs to be solved now, this evening, or even this week. Gaining consensus leads to better quality outcomes. Give it time. 10mmsocket (talk) 18:27, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
Your revert added back a blacklisted link. Magnolia677 (talk) 18:34, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
Like I say, give it time. Let others comment. 10mmsocket (talk) 18:40, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
I have removed the one offending blacklist URL. Now the page has been fully protected for 3 days so there's can't be any more edit warring. Either bring others to a discussion here or better still, as you clearly don't like the one answer you got here, start a new discussion on the article's talk page setting out your opinion. 10mmsocket (talk) 19:07, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
If another editor is able to look at the edits I made to fix this train wreck before it was reverted, I would appreciate your feedback about whether they were an improvement. Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 20:50, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
For the record, @Magnolia677 is not being accurate when they call WPCH a "personal blog." It is a community organization that regularly engages in civic life in Winnipeg and regularly presents at the city council meetings. Also, the WPCH article that's been linked to is accurate, and is written by James Wilt, an established journalist with bylines at many respected news outlets including The Narwhal, Vice News, Canadian Dimension, The National Observer and the Edmonton Journal, and has published books with Penguin Random House. Magnolia677 might disagree with criticism of the Winnipeg Police Service, but the idea that the sources are inaccurate or not reflective of public discourse around the Winnipeg Police Service is just flat-out wrong and betrays that the user is either completely uninformed about this topic, or has an axe to grind about this particular topic. Either way, I don't think they should be allowed to make any further edits on this page. Thomaspashko (talk) 03:17, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
@AOB9 just added this comment at Talk:Winnipeg Police Service "The Justice 4 Black Lives petition was released shortly before a peaceful protest at Manitoba legislature. "The group believes many local communities and grassroots organizations could take over the legal responsibilities of police" [1]. I believe this section does a good job at summarizing the demands of the petition." I believe AOB9 is correct. 10mmsocket (talk) 07:51, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
