Picture copyright question

Hi folks. Does anyone know if it is OK for German Ministry of Defence pictures to be uploaded on Wikipedia. There is picture on the English and German language pages about Operation Harekate Yolo. [1] Does anyone know if the copyright is OK, and if it is how the picture should be correctly labelled? source

I believe there is a valid reason for having the picture. But the copyright rules and wikipedia’s ‘explanation’ confuse me at the best of the times.

Thanks, Chwyatt (talk) 09:34, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

There is no public domain in the German legal code, however, I asked them whether they wouldn't mind us using the images because there is a law prohibiting the use of other people's images. Wandalstouring (talk) 13:45, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
You can still link directly to the images using Template:Externalimages if they do object or not reply. Wandalstouring (talk) 13:56, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, didn't know you could link to external images. Chwyatt (talk) 16:38, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
The official reply: No the images are property of the Bundeswehr and may not be used

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! For the 1.0 Editorial Team, §hepBot (Disable) 20:59, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Volksgebirgs

What exactly do you mean by: **Volksgebirgs → do not translate, and treat as a foreign term outside unit names ??? Lars 13:17, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

Obviously the 1. Gebirgsdivision was rebuilt as 1. Volksgebirgsdivision, cf. List of German divisions in World War II where you find 1st Mountain Division (later 1st Volksgebirgs Division). Most interesting, this rebuild is not mentioned in the article itself. Wschroedter (talk) 15:46, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

Italics for U-boat names

Volks-Sturm vs. Volkssturm

I move the discussion about the a.m. terms to this page where it belongs, and change the project page to reflect the actual outcome (which I support). Wschroedter (talk) 15:50, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

Volks-Sturm → do not translate, and take care not to spell it as Volkssturm

(why? that is the correct German term)
in some context this may refer to the migration period:
No, this is wrong. In Germany nobody knows about Volks-Sturm! It is spelled Volkssturm. What You mean is Völkerwanderung.

Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for German military history

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! For the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team, SelectionBot 22:42, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Soviet-German WWII operations

The longstanding and inclusive debates about naming Soviet-German WWII operations have been consolidated into one discussion, with a proposal to move 36 articles. As the outcome of the discussion will probably resolve this, all interested editors are urged to comment here. --ROGER DAVIES talk 10:09, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

This issue has now been resolved but individual articles may have point-of-view/balance concerns. It would be appreciated if editors could take a look at the articles with a view to fixing them. This also applies to the articles in Category:Battles and operations of the Eastern Front of World War II. --ROGER DAVIES talk 11:19, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Help needed - identifying German WWII rangefinders

Hello. I think this is the appropriate place to ask for some help. Could someone help me identify the models of the German range-finders used in some pictures on Commons? E.g., is this (the remains of) an Entfernungsmesser 34? There's also a ton of Bundesarchiv pictures. Just have look at commons:Category:Rangefinders and/or search for "entfernungsmesser" to get the uncategorized images. I can do the category work, I just need some information. Thank you. --Daggerstab (talk) 14:30, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

German-speaker (or -writer) needed…

This is sort of indirectly military-related, but can someone fluent in German help me out? I noticed the addition of de:SS Volturno to the article SS Volturno (1906) and glanced at the German article. In it, they note that SMS Seydlitz, a Kaiserliche Marine cruiser, rescued 46 survivors. The ship that actually participated in the rescue was the 1903 SS Seydlitz, a Norddeutscher Lloyd steamer. A source to that effect is:

Drechsel, Edwin (1994). Norddeutscher Lloyd, Bremen, 1857–1970: History, Fleet, Ship Mails. Vancouver, British Columbia: Cordillera Pub. Co. ISBN 9781895590081. OCLC 30357825.

Since I only read and write "Google German", I'm hoping someone who knows proper German can either mention this on the talk page there or add it to the article. Thanks in advance. — Bellhalla (talk) 14:20, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

You are invited to add military information to the above article, which now has only political content. In addition, I am not sure if the article title would be accurate if military info were so added. You might want to call it German operations on the Danube; I don't know. Changes to popular pages lists

There are a few important changes to the popular pages system. A quick summary:

  • The "importance" ranking (for projects that use it) will be included in the lists along with assessment.
  • The default list size has been lowered to 500 entries (from 1000)
  • I've set up a project on the Toolserver for the popular pages - tools:~alexz/pop/.
    • This includes a page to view the results for projects, including the in-progress results from the current month. Currently this can only show the results from a single project in one month. Features to see multiple projects or multiple months may be added later.
    • This includes a new interface for making requests to add a new project to the list.
    • There is also a form to request a change to the configuration for a project. Currently the configurable options are the size of the on-wiki list and the project subpage used for the list.
  • The on-wiki list should be generated and posted in a more timely and consistent manner than before.
  • The data is now retained indefinitely.
  • The script used to generate the pages has changed. The output should be the same. Please report any apparent inconsistencies (see below).
  • Bugs and feature requests should be reported using the Toolserver's bug tracker for "alexz's tools" - [2]

Renaming discussion

There is currently a discussion taking place on Talk:Panzer-Lehr-Division concerning renaming the article. All interested editors are invited to comment. EyeSerenetalk 11:18, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

The title of the article Battle between HMAS Sydney and German auxiliary cruiser Kormoran is currently under discussion at Talk:Battle between HMAS Sydney and German auxiliary cruiser Kormoran. Most of the comments so far have been in regards to Australian sources; there is no common name for the battle in these sources, and most refer to the battle as the loss of the Australian cruiser (i.e. "Loss of HMAS Sydney") or with a descriptive phrase naming both combatants (like the current article title). No German sources have been referred to so far, and I am wondering if anyone knows what the action is known as in Germany, or if the German approach is similar to the Australian approach.

Thanks in advance for your effort. -- saberwyn 23:32, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
