Change to Infobox

I have added the ability to show the resorts snowmaking and night skiing capacity to the infobox, which are both big draws for most eastern ski areas. -- Ubergenius 15:25, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

Template for Trails

I have used the following table on my first WikiProject Ski page (Wachusett Mountain Ski Area) and was wondering if you think it should be used on all WikiProject Ski pages:

I'm not so sure a list of trails is called for, mostly due to lack of notability. It's appropriate for an article to refer to a particular named run which is notable: for example a well-known movie shot a scene on it, or where a plane crashed. But famous-so-and-so's favorite run is trivia, not enlightenment. I would think a well-written ski area article describes the area's general characteristics—terrain difficulty distribution (or number of runs) and uphill capacity—as well as its unique attributes—1964 Olympic site, world's first gondola, etc. — EncMstr 18:05, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
I could go either way on this, I understand how a full list of trails for some of the larger resorts (Whistler, Vail) with tons of runs could take up half the page and most people will skip over it. Something like this might be better over at HookedonWinter.com. We should probably start adding links to the HookedonWinter Wiki in the See Also or References sections of all the pages (ie. Okemo). It has tons of good info for people who want to actually go there and want info other than vital stats, etc. Zzz345zzz 18:11, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

Perhaps just a count of the trails in each major category? I now agree that having a comprehensive list is probably a bit much, especially considering places with hundreds and hundreds of trails, but maybe a simple difficulty count, like this:

I think the latter is much more appropriate. It would be nice to have expert stand out more, perhaps using Jackson Hole coloring:

It would be really nice to standardize the categories, but that runs into problems with WP:V. Have a look at Timberline Lodge ski area#Terrain. I was fortunate to find a source who calculated detailed statistics and defined the slope ratings. Admittedly, that table is a little intense for most readers—that's why the preceding paragraph gives a simple description. — EncMstr 19:32, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

Don't know how much this is dragging up old business, but as someone who has only ever skied in Europe this looks strange. Would other users find it confusing if the colours of the table were defined by the colours used by the resort's host nation? I know (read: think) US and Canada are Green/Blue/Black/Double Black Diamond, but France use Green/Blue/Red/Black and Switzerland use Blue/Red/Black (either no 'Easier', or no 'Experts Only', depending on how arrogant you are. I guess there's a tradeoff between consistency between articles across borders, and accuracy/usability of the individual article. Thoughts? HazardousWaster 10:04, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Can we set this up as a template (in the "{{template page}}" sense) such that we can use parameters like "easier=35" or "most-difficult=12," with 35 and 12 being the number of those trails? HazardousWaster is right, we ought to consider that different resorts use different systems...Snowbird UT has intermediate ratings like Blue Square/Black Diamond...this could be dealt with in a template though. Infobox

I totally agree. It seemed to me like it was time someone created an infobox template specifically for alpine World Cup skiers. (They already exist for many other types of athletes, including World Cup ski jumpers.) I created a preliminary one; I'd never made one before, so go easy on me if I did something wrong — although I did try to emulate other existing athlete infobox templates. (This one is basically a hybrid of the generic "Athlete" one and the "Ski jumper" one.) It would be great to see someone make a similar template for freestyle skiers, newschoolers, etc.

I have added this to WikiProject Ski's list of templates, and implemented the template at Template:Infobox Alpine ski racer. There is discussion of this template going on over at Talk:2007 Alpine Skiing World Cup.

Slight problem guys. Since a lot of our athletes cross over into Olympic territory, there's also an Olympics infobox that is being used on some skiers pages, such as Bode Miller, as well as the template here. I like the way the medals are displayed on is as coloured boxes, and I don't think we really need birthdays or height, as that will go in the main article. However there are some parts of the template we've created for skiers that I like such as world cup debut, ski club and sponsor (though is mentioning the sponsor advertising? Hmmm.) I'd rather make all our articles uniform and I don't want to go around doing something nobody wants, so can we decide which box to use? My vote goes to the olympic one, as it shows which medals were won when/where as opposed to just a number.Apocalypsecabaret (talk) 22:26, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Infobox ski area

I've made a infobox for ski resorts: Template:Infobox ski area. It contains info for ski areas (such as top and base elevation, anual snowfall, lift system, runs (trails), location). Qyd(talk)16:06, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

I added that to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Ski list of templates. Instead of placeholders, it probably should have—at a minimum—logo and photo entries. EncMstr 16:33, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

  • I'm willing to help. As I get time, I've been updating the articles for a lot of the Colorado resorts that I go to. I've added a "Statistics" sections to several articles like the one seen on the Breckenridge, CO page.   • I'm interested in helping update the K2 page. Now that K2-Inc is part of Jarden, "K2" is more who it used to be: the ski & snowboard (& more) brand, no longer the parent company of Rawlings, etc. But I'm new to contributing to Wikipedia, so this might take me a while. For starters: there should be a separate "Jarden" page that covers alot of the K2-Inc stuff, and "K2" can be it's own thang.... Competitions

How about a section or few pages on various big competitions (ie x games, us open, etc.)? Take a look at Bode Miller's page. There's a whole template at the bottom of all the past winners for world cups. That would be cool to have for some of the competitions.

Combination

I was looking at the wikiproject sport and was looking at the lack of a Wikiproject winter sport. But then i found wikiproject ski. Would it be an idea to make an larger wikiproject that included all the elements from wikiproject ski and from it into a large wikiproject winter sports that included much more that just the skiing side of winter sports. Such as

  • everything wikiproject ski has
  • snowboarding
  • bobsleding etc
  • winter olympics
  • redlinks from snowsport pages such as winter sport

Just like to know your thoughts on this Edwardkindred

Trail difficulty

There should be an article on the common scales of ranking the difficulty of ski runs and their corresponding symbols, i.e. easy/intermediate/advanced, green circle/blue square/black diamond, exports only, double black diamonds, triangular yellow caution signs, etc. Right now, Black Diamond only has a short explanation about that single ranking and a link to Alpine Skiing, which doesn't talk about it at all. Hmm, I now see there is a bit of this discussion in the Skiing article. I missed it since Alpine Skiing is a seperate article. Those should probably be merged.

stub type for renaming

I just found your {{ski stub}} template today, and I've put it up for renaming at WP:SFD. The standard naming convention is that stub-types are hyphenated, like {{ski-stub}}. I figured this was probably the best place to talk about this. I started a new website dedicated to skiing and snowboarding and all things related. It has a wiki. Cross country skiing

Is the project also for real skiing (I mean cross country skiing) or just for downhill skiing? The name suggest that both should be included but the project page does not look like that. --Jan Smolik 21:58, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors.
