Job opportunity at the Bodleian Library

Hi all,

I hope you don't mind me spreading the news here. The Bodleian Libraries and Wikimedia UK are delighted to announce that we will be supporting a part time Wikimedian in Residence at the Bodleian library in Oxford. The post provides the opportunity to work with some of the world’s richest collections to improve content on Wikipedia and its sister projects and to share with the world the resources held in the Bodleian Libraries. The talk page here isn't very active but there are a number of Oxford-based or Oxford-related editors active on WP and some of us are (at least sporadically!) busy producing Oxford-related content, as a look at the specifically Oxford-themed content at Portal:University of Oxford/Quality content will show. So a Bodleian Wikimedian in Residence will be excellent news for those of us looking for that elusive Oxford-based reference but whose own Bodleian days are many years and / or scores of miles away! Category discussion - "faculty" or "academics" of the University of Oxford?

See Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2015 January 21#Category:Faculty of the University of Oxford. One proposal is to merge Category:Faculty of the University of Oxford into Category:Academics of the University of Oxford; there is a counter-proposal to merge them the other way round. Anyone have access to the "Bodleian Library Record"?

I'm looking around for another list of Oxford professors or similar to create (to go with the 8 featured lists I've got in this field already) and I'm going to work on the Heather Professor of Music. Does anyone have access to this article:

Category merger - Rawlinsonian Professors of Anglo-Saxon / Rawlinson and Bosworth Professors of Anglo-Saxon

In 1916, the position of Rawlinsonian Professor of Anglo-Saxon was renamed Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon. We have one article (the former name redirecting to the new) but two categories for the pre- and post-1916 professors. Should they be merged or kept as they are? Hello from the Bodleian Libraries

Hello Oxonian Wikipedians, I'm overjoyed to be the Bodleian Libraries' Wikimedian In Residence and I hope I get to meet all of you in the coming months. I'm commuting from Bristol and staying over in Oxford on some nights, so if anyone wants to get together for a drink on an evening mid-week, that'd be ideal for me. I intend to be at the upcoming Oxford meetups (see wmuk:Events).

At the moment I'm meeting people to examine possibilities for content sharing, and setting up a workshop for staff. Later in the year I'll be running some editathons around women in science and I think there is a lot more scope for public events. There's a lot of appreciation in the University for the work being done here on Wikipedia, and I hope we can bring the communities closer together. Project activities will be recorded at Wikipedia:GLAM/Bodleian. Feel free to contact me on my Talk page or via martin.poulterbodleian.ox.ac.uk.

Women in Science events at the University of Oxford

To celebrate the bicentenary of Ada Lovelace, Oxford IT Services, the Bodleian Libraries and Wikimedia UK are running four events next week (Monday 12 October to Thursday 15 October) around Women In Science. These include three events editing, improving and illustrating Wikipedia, plus a Wikisource transcribe-a-thon. Infobox heading and link colours

A July 2015 revision to Template:Infobox Oxford college changed the rendering of links from light orange to deep blue. This made the links hard to see when displayed against the dark primary colour of most of the college infobox headings (see example). It's not for me to decide whether the heading colours are more important than the link colours, so I have set them both back to the default pending a consensus that is legible for all possible college primary colours. Template talk:Infobox Oxford college is perhaps the best place for any discussion. - Pointillist (talk) 00:50, 8 March 2016 (UTC)

The Faculty of Theology website at University of Oxford lists Ripon College Cuddesdon as a College of the Faculty of Theology at Oxford. I feel this information should be included in the article.<www.theology.ox.ac.uk/courses-for-ministry.html>Corsairfud (talk) 16:14, 9 April 2016 (UTC)

The Deil's Hallowe'en

I tried placing this request at Wikipedia:WikiProject Resource Exchange/Resource Request, but this book is only known to exist at Oxford and the University of Glasgow, so I would very much appreciate any help that anyone here could give. I need a copy of The Deil's Hallowe'en, a poem by Young Glasgow (which may be a pseudonym) that was published in Glasgow in 1856, apparently as a standalone book. II do not need the entire poem, but only the page on which appears the line "A drappie o' the real McKay," plus any additional pages that may be needed to give the line context (e.g., does "real McKay" refer to a brand of whisky?). Here's the relevant text:

A drappie o' the real M`Kay,
Ye'll find it, deevils, when you try.
I red ye, lads, by horn and hoof!
It's jist a hunder over-proof.
I wadna gi'e a catholic damn

In context it's very clear that the reference is to whisky, but note the spelling: "M`Kay", and it's not clear that it's what we would now call a brand name, though it is consistent with that.

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.
