Chemicals for water purification

Hi, I work on WP:Chem, and I stumbled across this WikiProject. I wanted to ask, are there any specific chemicals for which you would like us to provide/improve article? Could you provide some information on how chemicals are used, for example aluminium sulfate, iron(III) chloride, sodium chlorite? Thanks, Walkerma 05:56, 2 October 2005 (UTC)

Category?

Do we need a category? I think a would make it far easier to keep track of what is covered by this project. Otherwise you might never know there were pages on Solar water disinfection, for example.

Category:Drinking water and Category:Water cover different topics. Should we go for Water purification, which would ignore supply topics such as rainwater, or Water supply, which would include separate issues of piping etc.? Propose move to WikiProject Water and sanitation

As this WikiProject isn't attracting much interest, I'd like to suggest moving it from WikiProject Water purification to WikiProject Water and sanitation. Any objections

Creating a water filters category

I'm thinking of creating Category:Water filters, as a subcategory of Category:Filters. Merge proposal

If anybody's home, I think that Wikipedia:WikiProject Water supply and sanitation by country should be merged into this project (works just like merging and redirecting articles, only you have to be sure that you found all the subpages and templates). Tankers have historically been a focus of WikiProject Ships; although comparison with alternative water supplies or means of water transport should be within the scope of this WikiProject. Water transportation infrastructure should be within the scope of this WikiProject because of aquatic habitat and water supply changes resulting from flow modifications associated with canals, locks, impoundments, and harbor improvements for transportation and flood control. Salinity gradients and exotic species introduction become significant in estuarine habitats where ocean shipping enters fresh water rivers and canal systems.Thewellman (talk) 19:23, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

Transportation canals, ship harbors, shipping channels, shipping routes, are currently covered at WP:TRANSPORT's Maritime task force. Canals (transport & water supply), harbor improvement & construction, flood control infrastructure (dams, levees, dykes, etc), are also covered by WP:Civil Engineering. Water power is covered by WP:ENERGY, while water power infrastructure (dams, tidal barrages, etc) also falls under WP:Civil Engineering. From my reading of the current project purpose, I would have thought that water supply tankers should fall in scope (as would water supply canals and sewage and supply infrastructure, and storm drains)

So some of the subjects covered under the current purpose are also covered elsewhere, while the expansion would add more, while also moving estuaries, etc from WPENVIRONMENT to here, in my estimation. Proposed Expansion on Water Scarcity in Africa page

As part of a class assignment through Rice University's Poverty, Justice and Human Capabilities program, I would like to expand on Water scarcity in Africa because as is, the article presents a very broad review on how clean water scarcity, women, children, education, and development are all interconnected in the context of Africa, but would benefit from more specific and expanded information, as well as the addition of new topic points relating to who it effects, why, and how. I have five main areas that I would like to expand upon:

1. More information is needed in the section titled "Women, Children, and Education" and potentially could be broken down into two separate parts - Women and Children - despite their related aspects, with an overarching theme of Education.

2. The section titled "Productivity and Development" would profit from a more in-depth discussion of various theories on how clean water scarcity in Africa impedes its development. I would also like to add more on how this affect the productivity of African women, specifically.

3. Under the section titled "Reasons for Scarcity", I would like to potentially add sub-sections on over-consumption, environmental degradation, population, politics and privatization's effect on water scarcity.

4. In response to comments calling for more specificity by region in this article, I would like to add a section on specific case studies on regions in Africa experiencing clean water scarcity. This would better illustrait the issue's broach-reaching impact, as well as show differences in severity throughout such a diverse continent.

5. In the section addressing what efforts are being made to alleviate this crisis, I would like to add updates to reflect any improvements in technology/efforts that have been made in the past year, as well as those possibly overlooked in the initial research for this page.

It is important that this page is continually improved, expanded, and updated because there is a clear link between African underdevelopment and clean water scarcity that should be recognized. I am delighted to see interest in expanding Wikipedia coverage of this subject. Since continental coverage of such an important topic has already generated a substantial article, you might consider breaking out one or more articles of reduced scope with focus on issues of specific regions of ethnic, political, meteorological, or geological similarity or continuity such as the Nile, Congo, Orange, Zambezi or Limpopo Rivers or within endorheic basins or coastal regions between these great drainage basins. List of freshwater ecoregions in Africa and Madagascar might be a good source of candidate areas for more focused coverage. If your edits would increase the length of the Water scarcity in Africa to more than 30,000 bytes, I suggest including a

Proposed Creation of Water Supply and Sanitation in Zimbabwe

As part of a class assignment through Rice University's Poverty, Justice and Human Capabilities program, I would like to create a page titled Water Supply and Sanitation in Zimbabwe. This page would provide a history of water supply and sanitation efforts in Zimbabwe, a current overview of the infrastructure and government organizations that deal with water supply and sanitation in Zimbabwe, a list and description of efforts of NGOs and aid branches of foreign governments that are helping to improve water supply and sanitation in Zimbabwe, and a description of current issues and future plans for helping to change water supply and sanitation in Zimbabwe. In addition I will add a section dealing with environmental concerns regarding water supply and sanitation in Zimbabwe and a section about human concerns, which will endeavor to make the connection between the general poor quality of life in Zimbabwe and the poor quality and quantity of water supply and sanitation in Zimbabwe. The sources I plan to use for this article include, but are not limited to, UNICEF, Human Rights Watch, African Development Bank Group, and Water Sanitation Program scholarly reports, studies, and factual overviews. Welcome aboard! The article sounds promising; but be sure to emphasize description of WP:Notability features of the article in your introductory paragraph. I'm glad to see inclusion of conventional water supply and sanitation engineering references among your sources. The situational differences in developing countries seem to largely be a matter of scale. While many English language engineering publications emphasize large scale projects which offer a comfortable margin of engineering costs to pay salaries; your article may be focused on smaller scale projects. You might look for publications aimed at rural landowners like http://www.nesc.wvu.edu/smallflows_journal.cfm

Another factor has been difficulty in training and retaining individuals with the skills to maintain the systems once they have been installed. USEPA encountered this problem with smaller wastewater treatment systems installed under the Clean Water Act Construction Grant Program subsequently replaced by the Clean Water State Revolving Fund. The original grant program was replaced by the loan program because grants encouraged many small communities to build systems they lacked the tax base to keep in operation. You may find EPA documents describing situations where communities payed low wages to treatment plant operators who quickly moved on to better paying jobs as soon as they acquired the skills necessary to keep the plant operating. Plants able to afford only a single operator were especially vulnerable to high personnel turnover.

I encourage you to construct your article in a sandbox space; as articles under development can be discouragingly savaged by well-meaning recent change patrollers. Please let me know if you have questions. Thewellman (talk) 20:49, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

Why does the WikiProject Water and Sanitation redirect to here?

I have just discovered that there is a page called WikiProject "Water and Sanitation" and it is re-directing to this page which is now called WikiProject Water. We do now have a WikiProject Sanitation as well, so should the redirect be changed? It could rather re-direct to WikiProject Sanitation or to both somehow? OK, this has now been changed. When someone goes to Wikipedia:WikiProject_Water_and_sanitation there is a fork which takes people to either WikiProject Water or to WikiProject Sanitation. That's much better. EvM-Susana (talk) 08:32, 8 May 2015 (UTC)

UNESCO project to improve water related articles on Wikipedia

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Standard naming format of articles

Hello. Commenting as someone with limited knowledge in the area, so pardon me if this sounds dumb. Please have a look at the below three separate series of articles:

Are they all more or less talking about the same thing? If not, what should each topic actually be about? I've spent a few seconds in randomly selected articles, and I believe they are all basically the same topic. Can anyone familiar in the topic shed some light on this please? And if they are in fact the same topic, should we consider standardising all of it to follow a single naming format? Kind regards, Reh man 13:16, 22 February 2019 (UTC)

Overall, I'd say that the difference is approximately this:

"Water resources management in…" is "Thou shalt not pollute the rivers and lakes, neither shalt thou pollute the aquifer, nor shalt thou drain any of them dry, because there are fish today and future generations of people tomorrow." This is the broadest topic.
"Water supply and sanitation in…" means "How drinking water gets to your kitchen sink, and what happens when it goes down the drain". It connects with water resources because droughts affect how much water you can supply.
"Irrigation in…" is going to largely be agricultural practices. This will be a subset of water resources management (because irrigation can harm water resources), but it's more about just how much irrigation is done, the methods used, etc.

While it makes sense (i.e. they are in fact separate subtopics), do you think they all warrant separate pages based on what content the pages currently host? From what I read, I feel the three series currently overlaps significantly, and can be merged into a broader topic. Do you feel the same? ~~P.s. I understand what you're trying to say, but the issues seems to be clear:

There is a significant overlap on those articles
If the duplication is removed, the separate articles would end up being tiny
These small articles which touches parts of the same topic, would then be better off merged (preferably in a series of standardised titles).

What did you mean by "should we consider standardising all of it to follow a single naming format?" What single naming format do you have in mind? To me the current naming makes sense as there is a distinct difference between "water supply and sanitation", "irrigation" and "water resources management". Are you saying that for countries where all three articles exist, e.g. Ethiopia, you'd like to merge the 3 articles about Ethiopia into one with the title of "Water supply, sanitation, irrigation and water resources management in Ethiopia"? I guess this is doable but I wonder if the new combined article wouldn't become quite large then. Also I imagine this would be a lot of work. Given the low view rates of these articles, is it really worth our time to do this kind of merger? Would it lead to higher click rates? EMsmile (talk) 04:17, 25 February 2019 (UTC)

I don't have a format in mind, hence this discussion. For a start, I'm thinking of a broad title such as "Water resources management and sanitation in xxx", for *all* articles currently listed above (so there won't be any other format used). Yes, some of the articles would be missing specific subtopics (i.e. those sections would need expansion), but that paves way for someone to fill in later.

It currently seems like the page would become very large. But looking closely, there seems to be quite an overlap between the three topics, and that too varies largely between country to country. Most editors also does not have a clear idea on what *exactly* goes where. See my comments with User:WhatamIdoing above. The work on merging the content itself could very well be a new task of this WikiProject. While click rates doesn't matter, it would most certainly give better quality information to the reader while at the same time a more understandable platform for contributors to contribute...

Hmmm, User talk:Rehman I am not sure. The amount of work required by someone would be huge. Wouldn't that amount of time be effort be better utilised for more "low hanging fruit" activities? Also it might not be easy to agree on a title. I think the topic of "water supply" does not fall under "water resources management". Also I am not a fan of long titles for articles. Maybe just "Water and sanitation in country X"? The term water would then include "water supply; water resources management; irrigation". Just a thought.EMsmile (talk) 08:13, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

remove or change phrase "virtual water balance"

Article Water footprint, Section "Calculation for different actors", it is written: "The virtual water balance of an area is the net import of virtual water Vi, net, defined as the difference of the gross import Vi of virtual water from its gross export Ve." This "difference" parallels the idea of change in storage of water balance, and not water balance. (change in storage is defined as the difference between total inflow and total outflow)

So, using a very well-known hydrological law, i.e., water balance, in such a phrase is misleading and wrong. Additionally, the phrase is only used in that small paragraph, hence it can easily be removed or changed to another phrase. Any thoughts? Mitral8 (talk) 12:38, 2 March 2021 (UTC)
