Cal Horton is a British gender studies scholar who is known for their research in transgender studies.[a] They are a research fellow at Oxford Brookes' Centre for Diversity Policy Research and Practice specializing in trans inclusion and Applied Trans Studies.[2]

Education and career

Horton earned their PhD at Goldsmiths, University of London on the field of cisnormativity, minority stress and the rights and wellbeing of socially transitioned trans children.[3] They are an advisor to All About Trans and stakeholder representative to the Trans Learning Partnership project.[3]

Horton's expert field of study is specialized in transgender care and education and well-being of transgender minors. They have published a wide range of research papers in peer-reviewed journals in the field since 2020.[4] They are leading research projects at Oxford Brookes University on the topics of Addressing Systemic Precarity: Trans Inclusion and Retention in STEM and Culturally competent outcome measurement in trans youth healthcare.[2][5]

Following the release of the Cass Review in early 2024, Horton was a guest on the podcast What the Trans!? alongside other guests Cora Sergeant, Natacha Kennedy and Reubs Walsh on a deep dive of the review.[6] Subsequently in July, Horton released another solo follow-up special episode for the podcast on the topic of Social Transition, Puberty Blockers and the Cass Review.[7] In August 2024 they published a critical review together with sociology researcher Ruth Pearce in the magazine Scientific American on the Cass Review titled The U.K.’s Cass Review Badly Fails Trans Children outlining the scientific shortcomings of the review and the potential harm to transgender minors as a result of it.[8][9]

In June 2024, Horton appeared as a guest on the podcast Science Vs on the topic of Trans Kids’ Healthcare: Are We Getting It Wrong? alongside Professor Stephen Russell and Ada Cheung.[10]

Horton has been an outspoken expert on the lack of support for transgender youth in schools in the United Kingdom and has worked to help improve conditions for transgender children at schools with their research.[11][12][13]

Personal life

Horton identifies as non-binary.[1]

They have a trans child with their partner.[14][15]
