Monuments and memorials do not include U.S. National Monuments[edit]

Because there has been confusion (discussed at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Protected areas#botanical parks are protected areas?), I added the following clarifying text to the category page:

Monuments and memorials are statues, obelisks, and other types of objects which serve as a focus for memory of something, usually a person (who has died) or an event. Popular forms of memorials include landmark objects or art objects such as sculptures, statues or fountains.
Note: monuments and memorials in the U.S. include National Memorials like the Washington Monument, but this category is not meant to describe various natural park-type places like Devils Postpile which happen to be given the legal name "National Monument" for reasons unrelated to any memorial purpose.

Hopefully this will dissuade any editors coming by and adding all the U.S. National Monuments, most of which are natural places having no resemblance to the topic of memorials, to this category. doncram (talk) 05:01, 29 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The above statement makes no sense. 'Monuments' are 'monuments', obviously. Stop trying to orphan this category. Hmains (talk) 21:01, 29 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
