old comments[edit]

These category pages have popped everywhere but I cannot see where we can discuss if they are a good idea. Is there a talk category somewhere?--BozMo|talk 13:24, 28 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Geography is a sub-cat or is not a subcat. Work it out.[edit]

It is fine to talk about the interplay of Geography and "Social science" (or for grammer school, it was called "social studies"), but please recognize that Geography is already a Category:Top 8 cat and does not need help to be found. If you try to say that Georgraphy is a sub-cat, then have a big meeting and get buy-in on that and then change the Wikipedia:Browse UI to reflect this.

I also realize that Geography also includes purely "social" things like Cities and States and stuff. Such is its nature. Just do not call it a sub-cat.

The user needs some consistency at the Browse level. -- Fplay 07:26, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Seems to me that human geography is a relevant interdiscipline w/ Social sci. Geography is not necessarily SS, which is why it's not a viable subcategory. Only one form of geography is a direct part of SS.
Aside. While I prefer "social studies" to "social sciences" whenever we speak of social theories more than research (and find that much of so-called 'social science' is social philosophy), this remains a category about social science. So it goes. Lucidish 23:43, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Difficult issues here. Very complex. Being a top level category on Wikipedia does not define the nature of an academic or professional discipline. The practitioners of the discipline and categorizing and institutional practices in society defines the nature of the discipline. In those various ways, human geography is indeed a social science. The top level of Wikipedia does not need to be edited. I am comfortable with the social sciences of history (who some argue is one of the humanities but it is also very much a social science in practice) and geography (part nature cartography and part social science) and eventually the general category of social science all being top categories :) These respectively deal with the humans in time, space and culture/social relations, each worthy of top level categories and gates across various wikipedia indices -- as is the case in other language wikipedias. Social science portal[edit]

I am surprised that there is no social science portal. If doable, it is time to create one. If anyone wants to help, please do. Vir 05:13, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think that we could improve the current social science page by adding a tad more information on each of the social sciences mentioned. This may help when people look at the page to see what exactly each of the social sciences does.Grgarcia5 (talk) 03:42, 2 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think we could add the history behind the social sciences, like who discovered it, when it was discovered, how long it took to become a credible field of study, etc. Jmann126 (talk) 00:10, 7 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
