Culture of San Jose vs San Jose and Silicon Valley attractions[edit]

I wonder if we need both this and Category:Culture of San Jose, California? Could we merge that category into this one? Where would we have that discussion? --JaGa (talk) 03:38, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Strong Oppose There is some common ground - but they are definitely not the same topic. There are culture items which are not of interest to visitors. The visitor attractions category (for consistency with other "Visitor attractions in X" topics) takes a wider geographic scope about San Jose, as a visitor from outside the area would, and so includes all of Silicon Valley. There are a lot of visitor attractions which are not cultural topics. These absolutely cannot be merged. Ikluft (talk) 04:26, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed renaming to Visitor attractions in San Jose, California[edit]

After creating Category:San Jose and Silicon Valley attractions, I eventually found other categories have already standardized on "Visitor attractions in X". I tagged this category for speedy rename on the basis of following the existing standard (which fits the speedy criteria.) The question that JaGa asked above points out that we need to make it clear that the definition of this category covers the visitor's point of view of San Jose, which includes the whole Silicon Valley metro area. Changed proposed renaming to Visitor attractions in Silicon Valley[edit]

At first it seemed more consistent with other "Visitor attractions in X" categories to use the name of the major city, favoring use of San Jose over Silicon Valley. But a suggestion was made on the speedy renaming discussion to consider Silicon Valley again. Yes, this is a unique scenario where there is a well-known nickname for a wider area than the major city name. There no need to argue against a suggestion for the intuitive. So I've accepted the suggestion and changed the requested renaming to "Visitor attractions in Silicon Valley". Ikluft (talk) 09:20, 19 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The fact that any discussion took place at all disqualified the request from speedy criteria. Since this topic is brand new anyway, I'll create a new category with the correct name Category:Visitor attractions in Silicon Valley and move all the articles there.

Proposed deletion[edit]

With the failure of the speedy rename, I was told to take this directly to the CfD process. So all the articles that had been added to this category in the past few days have now been recategorized to Category:Visitor attractions in Silicon Valley. This category is now empty.
