Darjeeling Hills University is a public state university in Darjeeling, West Bengal, India. The university was established in 2021 under The Greenfield University Act, 2018.[2][3] This act was later amended by The Greenfield University (Amendment) Act, 2019 which replaced 'Greenfield University' with 'Darjeeling Hills University'. It became active with the appointment of the first vice-chancellor (VC), Subiresh Bhattacharya, in November 2021.[4][5][6] It offers education in Nepali, English, History, Political Science, Mass Communication, and Mathematics.[4] In September 2022, following Bhattacharya's arrest, Om Prakash Mishra was appointed as a caretaker interim VC.[7] The following year, in March 2023, Prem Poddar was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor for a short three month term.[8] After his term expired, no interim or full-term Vice-Chancellors have been appointed. Until March 2024, the administrative officers of University of North Bengal were assigned to administer both universities. At present, faculty members from Darjeeling Government College have been assigned to handle the administrative affairs of the university. The main campus of the university is currently being built in Jogighat, Mungpoo. Currently, the university is using the ITI Building in Bhasmey, Mungpoo as its campus. Due to the university commencing operations during the Covid-19 pandemic, the classes were being held online. However, in April 2024, on-campus classes were started at the ITI Building.[9]

Recognition by University Grants Commission (UGC)[edit]
