The classes started from the first week of July 2014 under the mentorship of IIEST Shibpur, from the temporary campus located at the campus of JIS College of Engineering. On 19 August 2014, the official inauguration of the institute was done by the former mentor director Ajoy Kumar Ray, the director of IIEST Shibpur.[7] The mentorship was passed on to IIT Kharagpur in 2017 and the institute has since been operating from a transit campus at Webel IT Park.

[edit]

Academics

[edit]

The academic structure of IIIT Kalyani exhibits the diversity, comprehensiveness and depth befitting an institution of its age and stature. The programs/courses offered at the Institute have the flexibility to evolve and change in response to new requirements and serve the dual purpose of building a solid foundation of knowledge while enhancing confidence, creativity and innovation among the students. A unique attribute of IIIT Kalyani's academic structure is the autonomy enjoyed by the faculty in designing and structuring their curriculum and courses. While there are no individual departments, the basic academic units deliver the respective courses. Some courses are offered jointly by multiple academic units and are classified as interdisciplinary courses. A favorable student-teacher ratio ensures productive, personal contact between the student and the teacher. The credit-based academic programs of the Institute offer flexibility to students to progress at their own pace. Presently, IIIT Kalyani is offering B.Tech (CSE) program with 118 seats, B.Tech. (ECE) program with 60 seats, Ph.D. (full-time and part-time), an online M.Tech. program on Artificial Intelligence and Data Science.
