Draft:Mark Chrystal

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  • Comment: Chrystal has been involved in a lot of notable events (worked for notable companies, was a plaintiff in a notable lawsuit, and played college sports). However, it doesn't look like he meets any notability guidelines as an individual.
In fact, the reliable sources used don't mention him. I checked Variety, WSJ, Reuters, The Independent, Deadline and NBC. VentureBeat quotes him as a company employee, but that doesn't support notability. BuySomeApples (talk) 15:39, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

Mark Chrystal (born 1972) is a British-American retailer and technology entrepreneur focusing on the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) in the retail industry. Chrystal cofounded Netail alongside Andrew Ng, the founder of AI at Google, and serves as Netail's CEO.[1]. At Netail, Chrystal led the development of Profitmind, the retail industry's first fully automated AI analyst[2] after raising $5 million in funding from AI Fund, Magarac Venture Partners, HKSTP Ventures and Carnegie Mellon University[3][4]. Netail's solutions have gained strong traction in the retail industry with its retail customers spanning three continents[5]. Chrystal is also known for being a leading plaintiff in the Ohio State University sexual abuse scandal, that is currently being turned into a HBO documentary[6].

Chrystal's team at rue21 was recognized as being amongst the top innovators in the retail industry, by Apparel Magazine in 2019[7]. Chrystal was also a key contributor to rue21's successful IPO in 2009[8], helping them to raise more than a $125 million[9]. Almost four years later, Chrystal was part of the executive team that sold rue21 to private equity firm Apax Partners for $1.1 Billion[10][11].

Biography[edit]

Chrystal was born in the United Kingdom and grew up in Sheffield. He was recruited to play soccer at The Ohio State University, joining the team in 1992[12]. He earned three NCAA Division 1 varsity letters while playing for Ohio State's Men's Soccer team, in 1993, 1995 and 1996[13][14]. Chrystal's team would finish top of the Big Ten regular season standings in 1996[15], losing to Big Ten Tournament host Penn State in the first round of the tournament[16]. Chrystal was described as a tough tackler and a good passer of the ball by 1992 Big Ten head coach of the year, Gary Avedikian[17][18].

In 1997, Chrystal earned a bachelor's degree in economics from the Ohio State University. This degree meant that Chrystal had followed his father into the economics field. His father is Professor K.A. Chrystal, a well known economist and co-author of the best selling economics text book: Economics[19].

in 1999, Chrystal earned a master of business administration degree from the University of London. He followed this up with a Doctorate in Business Administration from the University of Liverpool in 2017. His doctoral thesis studied digital consumer behavior and how to transform businesses through data centric decision-making[20]. Chrystal used the technique of action learning, which he learned during his doctoral studies to help turn around rue21's business after their bankruptcy in 2017[21] . Chrystal published a journal article about this experience, in the Action Learning: Research and Practice journal in 2020[22].

Chrystal continued his academic studies, earning a post-graduate diploma in machine learning and artificial intelligence from the International Institute of Information Technology in Bangalore India and a master's in machine learning and artificial intelligence from Liverpool John Moores University[23].

Chrystal has spent the majority of his career as a senior executive at various retailers, including: rue21, David's Bridal, American Eagle Outfitters, The Disney Store and Victoria's Secret[24]. In 2013, Chrystal led the development and implementation of rue21's first ever ecommerce operation[25]. Since 2017, Chrystal has been focused on developing AI-based solutions for the retail industry, co-founding MachineCore and Netail. Shortly after completing fund raising for Netail in 2022, Chrystal announced that the company would be relocating from Silicon Valley to Pittsburgh[26]. Netail opened an office in Bakery Square in Pittsburgh in the fall of 2023[27].

Ohio State University abuse scandal[edit]

Chrystal is at the center of the Ohio State University abuse scandal, as one of 350 former students and athletes to file a lawsuit against the Ohio State University, accusing them of failing to protect them against Richard Strauss. Chrystal participated in the Perkins Coie investigation into sexual abuse claims by former team doctor Richard Strauss[28]. The Perkins Coie investigation found that Dr. Strauss committed widespread sexual abuse and that coaches and officials at the Ohio State University knew that Dr. Strauss was a sexual predator but failed to take action for decades[29]. The Ohio State University continues to contest lawsuits brought by Chrystal and other plaintiffs[30].

HBO announced in June 2022 that a documentary about the Dr. Strauss' abuse scandal had started production, with George Clooney's Smokehouse Pictures, Sports Illustrated Studios and Eva Orner all involved[31][32]
