StormStock is a collection of weather and climate stock footage founded by American filmmaker and storm chaser Martin Lisius in 1993.[1] The brand is owned by Prairie Pictures, Inc. of Arlington, Texas. Content produced by StormStock is licensed for use in TV shows, films, commercials, and other video productions. Topics include footage of hurricanes,[2] tornadoes,[3] lightning, climate change,[4] supercell thunderstorms, extreme weather,[5] and natural disasters. The collection focuses on producing content on high-resolution formats including 4K, 8K and 16K video[6]. Lisius tracks and films storms and is the primary contributor to the StormStock collection. [7][8] For his innovation and work developing StormStock, Lisius was nominated for Footage Person of the Year by FOCAL International in 2023.[9] News about StormStock appears regularly in video and film trades.[10][11][12]
Innovation[edit]
StormStock was the first stock footage source to produce and license content on 16K video, beginning in 2018. The 16K camera system was designed and built by Martin Lisius utilizing two 50-megapixel stills cameras synced by a trigger cable which captured a left and right image simultaneously.[13] The images were stitched together and rendered as a 16K video (15,985 x 5,792 pixels).[14] In an interview with PetaPixel in 2020, Lisius said, "“I wanted to create a medium as large as the sky. 16K offers the tremendous resolution depth needed to pull that off.”[15]
