coordinates off

[edit]

@Zero0000 and Bellezzasolo:, either of you able to figure out the correct coordinates on this one? Right now it is placing cities off by hundreds of miles to the east. See Jerusalem or Cairo and hit Arab world in infobox map for examples. nableezy - 16:33, 27 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have been thinking about it – my guess is that it is to do with the map projection. Because the image shows a curved projection, the edge coordinates vary.
The data page says Module:Location map/data/Arab world is a location map definition used to overlay markers and labels on an equirectangular projection map of Arab world. But it is not an equirectangular projection.
We could perhaps replace it with File:Arab World Green 2.png, with new coordinates.

Once is correct. I tried to straighten the projection but there is not enough in the corners. I wrote to the map creator. Zerotalk 01:49, 28 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Zero0000, I thought we had something to deal with other projections? Bellezzasolo Discuss 20:05, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Just had a look - take a look at Module:Location_map/data/USA. You can define the x and y coordinates manually - in that case, it's an equidistant conic projection, which this one isn't, but it's a start. Bellezzasolo Discuss 20:09, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Bellezzasolo: Yes, it's a great start. A question, though. On that page the meaning of the x parameter is "An expression to calculate a location on the map via its longitude", and similarly for y. I expect that both latitude and longitude are needed for both x and y, and I see two parameters in the expressions. Is the comment wrong? Zerotalk 01:45, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Zero0000, Yep, they'll depend on both! If I were to hazard a guess, $1 is latitude and $2 is longitude, due to the latter parameter being centred on the 96th meridian west. Bellezzasolo Discuss 19:45, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Zero0000, Bellezzasolo, and Nableezy: just coming back to this, as it was never fully fixed. What do you think about replacing the map with File:Arab World Green 2.png, with new coordinates? Onceinawhile (talk) 20:24, 24 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I think thats fine, but we been having a map showing cities off by hundreds of miles for over a year now, so I think we either change the map now or remove this from every infobox that features it. @Zero0000, Bellezzasolo, and Onceinawhile:, what say you? nableezy - 17:01, 6 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Bellezzasolo, Zero0000, and Onceinawhile: think this needs to be adjusted one way or another. nableezy - 16:15, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed it from the infoboxes it was in (about 25 or so). It is still in Arab Games, Arab Capital of Culture, Algeria–Tunisia football rivalry and 2023 Arab Club Champions Cup, but seems to be ok. Onceinawhile (talk) 20:23, 5 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
