Partly done: please see #What's the point of the time purge? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:35, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
@MSGJ: The Purge button allows the page to be updated. The page can still be purged, but it involves adding "?action=purge" to the URL and is a bit slow, so the Purge button should be re-added to speed that up. SemiHypercube (talk) 11:51, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
Please discuss at #What's the point of the time purge? and ping the other participants — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 13:48, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
The purge button was removed since the portal now automatically updates when a subpage is edited, so there's no need for it.  Nixinova T  C   00:18, 25 April 2018 (UTC)

Notice from the Portals WikiProject

WikiProject Portals is back!

The project was rebooted and completely overhauled on April 17th, 2018. Its goals are to revitalize the entire portal system, make building and maintaining portals easier, support the ongoing improvement of portals and the editors dedicated to this, and design the portals of the future.

As of May 2nd, 2018, membership is at 60 editors, and growing. You are welcome to join us.

There are design initiatives for revitalizing the portals system as a whole, and for improving each component of portals. So far, 2 new dynamic components have been developed: Template:Transclude lead excerpt and Template:Transclude random excerpt.

Tools are provided for building and maintaining portals, including automated portals that update themselves in various ways.

And, if you are bored and would like something to occupy your mind, we have a wonderful task list.

From your friendly neighborhood Portals WikiProject. Hope to see you there. Sincerely,    — The Transhumanist   07:26, 2 May 2018 (UTC)

Relevant RFC

As currently worded, the proposal at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#RfC: Ending the system of portals includes the deletion of the current events portal. -- John of Reading (talk) 15:08, 8 April 2018 (UTC)

  • I have made a suggestion on the future of this portal at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#A new home for some useful portals. -- BobTheIP editing as 2.28.13.227 (talk) 17:43, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
  • Meanwhile, can anything be done about the big red in-your-face box on this high-visibility page? Disruptive and intrusive are words that come to mind. Moscow Mule (talk) 17:39, 16 April 2018 (UTC)
    • Absolutely not. It's the portal equivalent of sticking an AfD notice. up. -- BobTheIP editing as 2.28.13.227 (talk) 15:59, 19 April 2018 (UTC)
      • Why can't it just go on this page instead of cluttering the main one?  Nixinova T  C   00:16, 25 April 2018 (UTC)
        • The same reason AfD notices aren't buried on article talk pages.... -- BobTheIP editing as 92.29.27.179 (talk) 12:16, 6 May 2018 (UTC)

Remove the deletion notice

This portal is obviously not going to be deleted so can someone please remove that eyesore?  Nixinova  T  C  04:13, 21 April 2018 (UTC)

  • Oppose. The portal is nominated for deletion. The notice can be removed when the RfC closes. -- BobTheIP editing as 89.240.139.36 (talk) 08:00, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
  • The portal itself is not gonna be deleted, it's just gonna be moved to a different namespace, so there's no need for the template.  Nixinova  T  C  20:40, 23 April 2018 (UTC)
  • That isn't at all what the RfC says, and indeed this very issue has been raised and responded to (multiple times) at the RfA. -- BobTheIP editing as 92.29.27.179 (talk) 12:17, 6 May 2018 (UTC)

Comma or no comma

More trivial issues – do we include the comma (Reuters), (Israel National News), (CNN) or not (Haaretz) (The Washington Post) (The Times of Israel)?  Nixinova T  C   19:59, 27 April 2018 (UTC) – Pinging 05:32, 4 May 2018 (UTC)

BBC or BBC News?

Which one is correct: "BBC" or "BBC News"? Because people are using both and I want to know which one is the right one to use.  Nixinova  T  C  03:35, 24 April 2018 (UTC) — Pinging 06:01, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

I don't think there's a right answer; or, perhaps, neither is a wrong answer. I'd !vote for BBC since they separate themselves into BBC News and BBC Sport on the website; both might be used here and it's basically the same source so use the same form. I've probably used both without even thinking about it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.29.27.179 (talk) 13:38, 6 May 2018 (UTC)

As far as I know, I think that adding a 2 and so on is the standard. Though I might be wrong.--EdgarCabreraFariña (talk) 11:23, 17 May 2018 (UTC)

Articles in other languages

Is it fine to have the news articles in a language other than english?  Nixinova  T  C  06:42, 4 June 2018 (UTC)  Nixinova  T  C  06:42, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

  • The edit instructions say "News stories must be in the English language". However, I haven't seen this strictly enforced, and the instructions might be outdated as they were mostly written in 2007. I feel that English-language sources are preferred, but other languages can be used if they're the only ones covering a certain news item. FallingGravity 23:36, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
I think I'll go ahead and soften the language there. FallingGravity 05:53, 7 June 2018 (UTC)

Remove references sections from monthly subpages?

In Special:Diff/844027766, Nixinova removed the references section from the page Portal:Current events/May 2018. I have restored that section for now. The user needs to explain why the references section should be removed. There are also many other months where none of the transcluded daily subpages use <ref></ref> tags, but instead external links beginning and ending with parentheses, and we need to discuss whether we should remove the references sections from those monthly subpages. GeoffreyT2000 (talk) 18:58, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

  • Pages shouldn't be using ref tags in current events. We just use plain links here. I removed them because they are not used at all.  Nixinova  T  C  00:50, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
  • No-one has replied so I'm going to assume they aren't needed.  Nixinova  T  C  07:53, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

Extra space?

There seems to be an extra space at the top. See [1] vs [2] (taken 9 hours apart). What caused this?  Nixinova  T  C  06:05, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

I don't see a space in the live page so I guess it's resolved. It was probably caused by blanking Portal:Current events/2018 June 19 at the time.[3] PrimeHunter (talk) 12:28, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

WikiCup 2018 July newsletter

The third round of the 2018 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round had at least 227 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  • South Carolina Courcelles, a first time contestant, with 1756 points, a tally built largely on 27 GAs related to the Olympics
  • Scotland Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with two featured articles and three GAs on natural history and astronomy topics
  • Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, a finalist last year, with a variety of submissions related to transport in the state of Washington

Contestants managed 7 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 120 good articles, 1 good topic, 124 DYK entries, 15 ITN entries, and 132 good article reviews. Over the course of the competition, contestants have completed 458 GA reviews, in comparison to 244 good articles submitted for review and promoted. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process; several submissions, particularly in abstruse or technical areas, have needed additional work to make them completely verifiable.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. On the selection of news items reported here

I frequent this page, and have noticed that at least 90% (conservative estimate) of the news items are "negative," and that often a day will have NO "positive" news items listed or perhaps one sports result which could qualify as such. Why and how is this exceptionally biased selection process occurring? How can we improve it?

I am thinking more reporting could be done of charitable donations, scientific publications, etc. If it is "newsworthy" that some terror attack kills 2 people (out of 8 billion) in some local province somewhere, isn't it also newsworthy that an art gallery opens a new exhibition in a local area.

The general policies apply on this page: see Wikipedia:List of policies and guidelines. Especially the general notability guideline. If a local art gallery exhibition would exceptionally get "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject", then I guess it's OK to include here. Also please don't forget to sign your contributions on talk pages. Cheers. Wakari07 (talk) 15:08, 9 August 2018 (UTC)

WikiCup 2018 September newsletter

The fourth round of the 2018 WikiCup has now come to an end. The eight users who made it to the final round had to score a minimum of 422 points to qualify, with the top score in the round being 4869 points. The leaders in round 4 were:

  • South Carolina Courcelles scored a magnificent 4869 points, with 92 good articles on Olympics-related themes. Courcelles' bonus points alone exceeded the total score of any of the other contestants!
  • Hel, Poland Kees08 was second with 1155 points, including a high-scoring featured article for Neil Armstrong, two good topics and some Olympics-related good articles.
  • Scotland Cas Liber, with 1066 points, was in third place this round, with two featured articles and a good article, all on natural history topics.
  • Other contestants who qualified for the final round were Marshall Islands Nova Crystallis, Republic of Texas Iazyges, Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, Wales Kosack and United States Ceranthor.

During round four, 6 featured articles and 164 good articles were promoted by WikiCup contestants, 13 articles were included in good topics and 143 good article reviews were performed. There were also 10 "in the news" contributions on the main page and 53 "did you knows". Congratulations to all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck, and let the best editor win! Weird formatting bug

A recent change to the picture at Template:In the news caused the caption to go below the outline of the template, when displayed at full width. This caused the sidebar to move left out of the way. Hello and Happy New Year!

Welcome to the 2019 WikiCup, the competition begins today. If you have already joined, your submission page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and we will set up your submissions page. One important rule to remember is that only content on which you have completed significant work during 2019, and which you have nominated this year, is eligible for points in the competition, the judges will be checking! Any questions should be directed to one of the judges, or left on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will make it to round 2. Good luck! Possible NPOV problem

Jan 1,2019's Law and Crime section states that "Five people are injured after a man intentionally drives a car into multiple crowds of people in the cities of Bottrop and Essen, Germany. Police say the incident appears to be a xenophobic far-right attack." What exactly does "far-right" mean? If the section is stating that right-wing politics is xenophobic, than it would not have a NPOV. - ZLEA Talk\Contribs 16:07, 3 January 2019 (UTC)

I'm genuinely interested, why are disasters and accidents topical and relevant to the rest of the world? Many days the news of the day is flooded with these types of items.

And did you intend "random" with the jargon meaning, as a child would, or did you rather intend the sense that some kid chose a random article to write his own personal blog into? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:4200:7000:1:0:0:0:10 (talk) 07:50, 22 January 2019 (UTC)

Error regarding Bruce McArthur

I was surprised to find that the article I was trying to get on ITN had already appeared on Portal:Current events three times. I haven't paid much attention to the portal namespace and am ignorant of how it functions, or the particular criteria for this specific portal. However, I noted an error on Portal:Current events/2018 February 8 which states in Law and crime, Crime in Toronto:

The remains of six people found on a property in East York are linked to alleged serial killer Bruce McArthur. This brings the total body count to eleven. (Global News)

The conclusion which the editor made in the second sentence is incorrect, apparently calculating 5+6=11 based on false assumptions. I cannot access the video in the source, but the text says that the remains of six people were found on the property, and later in the same story that this property was "the only place where remains have been discovered." So the literal "body count" is six. Here are some other sources from that day: National Post, Kiro7 which confirm this, as do numerous sources on the following days.

McArthur had earlier (Jan 29) been charged with five murders for which the bodies had not been found and/or identified, and on Feb 8 they had six bodies. That provided a range of between 6 and 11 alleged killings, depending on the overlap between the two groups. Actually, one of the six bodies was identified Feb 8 and corresponded to one of the charges laid (Kinsman), so the range at that time was really 6 to 10.

I don't know if this is something that you correct or if you retain mistakes for archival purposes. I would suggest striking the second sentence. The National Post source makes the numbers a little more clear. – Reidgreg (talk) 16:12, 1 February 2019 (UTC)

Coherency check?

I realize the Current Events portal is not something that gets copyedited as thoroughly as articles, but ... "Saudi Arabia signs $20 billion dollars in deals with Pakistan. (BBC News)"

Reads as "... twenty dollars billion dollars ..." because there is both the dollar symbol and the spelled-out word. Plus what does "signs dollars in deals with with Pakistan" even mean? IAmNitpicking (talk) 18:02, 19 February 2019 (UTC)

"Topics in the News" header not vetted for relevance

It seems to me that the header does not equally represent events based on magnitude of importance. For example, the Presidential change in Khazakstan has been up for 3 days, while a bus crash in Ghana that killed >50 people happened yesterday is not in the header. Similarly, the Yacheng chemical plant explosion from 2 days ago was not put in the header, even though it killed 47 and injured 640. Purely in terms of numbers, these are significant losses of life with great impact. WikiCup 2019 May newsletter

The second round of the 2019 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to scored 32 points to advance into round 3. Our top four scorers in round 2 all scored over 400 points and were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber (1210), our winner in 2016, with two featured articles and three DYKs. He also made good use of the bonus points available, more than doubling his score by choosing appropriate articles to work on.
  • Wales Kosack (750), last year's runner up, with an FA, a GA, two FLs, and five DYKs.
  • Adam Cuerden (480), a WikiCup veteran, with 16 featured pictures, mostly restorations.
  • Kingdom of Prussia Zwerg Nase (461), a seasoned competitor, with a FA, a GA and an ITN item.

Other notable performances were put in by Chicago Barkeep49 with six GAs, United States Ceranthor, England Lee Vilenski, and Saskatchewan Canada Hky, each with seven GARs, and Denmark MPJ-DK with a seven item GT.

So far contestants have achieved nine featured articles between them and a splendid 80 good articles. Commendably, 227 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2019 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. The judges are pleased with the thorough GARs that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Number casualties Aeroflot Flight 1492

There was a 5-person crew in addition to 78 passengers, so the total on board on was 83. The May 5 entry is: "A five-person crew and 78 passengers were on board." RaqiwasSushi (talk) 17:25, 7 May 2019 (UTC)

@RaqiwasSushi: I'm not sure what the problem is, the quoted part is identical to your assertion, and both seem correct to me. Isa (talk) 18:04, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
@Isanae: Thanks for quick response. The "Topics in the News" entry is "... killing 41 of the 78 people on board." which doesn't include the 5-person crew. 41 of 78 passengers would be accurate but incomplete. RaqiwasSushi (talk) 18:37, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
@RaqiwasSushi: Well, now that I looked at it, it's the May 5 entry that's incorrect: the article and all the sources say there were 73 passengers + 5 crews. I've fixed the entry. For future reference, errors in the "In the news" box should be reported at WP:ERRORS, not here. Isa (talk) 18:45, 7 May 2019 (UTC)

Waiting until the day the SI units are redefined and only then discussing whether to put them on the main page seems like a bad plan.

This regards this revert

Is it really true that you don't allow upcoming entries to be discussed until there is zero time left to make a decision?

The redefinition of the base units for the metric system happens on 20 May 2019. I am hoping to get this article mentioned on the main page on that day.

Alas, I also have a hot project and if I don't make my deadline because I spent too much time navigating the politics of getting things mentioned on the main page the toy I am working on will miss Christmas. :(

Related: Wikipedia:Help desk#2019 redefinition of SI base units --Guy Macon (talk) 13:24, 18 May 2019 (UTC)

@Guy Macon: You'll find this talk page to be lightly patrolled, so your best bet is to keep this on the help desk. The guidelines for the current events portal are basically non-existent, except that they should be sourced and are never signed. You can look at the boxes for any other day for examples. As for your changes, announcements of events are often removed for being somewhat trivial, but not always. In this case, I would wait until the 20th. Finally, as you were told on the help desk, ITN is different from the current event portal. You can nominate articles on WP:ITN/C. Cheers! Isa (talk) 13:47, 18 May 2019 (UTC)

WP:CEN is now open!

To all interested parties: Now that it has a proper shortcut, the current events noticeboard has now officially opened for discussion!

WP:CEN came about as an idea I explored through a request for comment that closed last March. Recen research has re-opened the debate on Wikipedia's role in a changing faster-paced internet. Questions of WP:NOTNEWS and WP:Recentism are still floating around. That being said, there are still plenty of articles to write and hopefully this noticeboard can positively contribute to that critical process.

Thank you for your participation in the RFC, and I hope to see you at WP:CEN soon! –MJLTalk 17:08, 26 June 2019 (UTC)

Why are there so many different sport sections?

There is a Sport section in the "Ongoing events" sidebar, there is a dedicated "Sport" sidebar and then there is the /Sports subpage. Which one do I use when and why? And is it not a bad idea to split current events about sport into so many different sections? Am I missing something here? --Hecato (talk) 20:19, 11 August 2019 (UTC)

question

hi. sorry, I'm new to this page. how do I make an edit? I already know I'm supposed to use {{Edit fully protected}} if I wish to request edits to a fully-protected page, and simply make the request on the article's talk page; is that the procedure here? if not, where would I make ordinary edits? thanks. sorry for this very basic question. --Sm8900 (talk) 16:52, 19 August 2019 (UTC)

@Sm8900:: Thanks for the question! Each of the days shown here are a separate page; you need to go to the page for that date (Portal:Current events/2019 August 19 is the one for today) and make the edit there. If you want to make an edit to the sidebar, go to the talk page for Portal:Current events/Sidebar and make the request there. UnitedStatesian (talk) 16:58, 19 August 2019 (UTC)
ok, that's very helpful. thanks! --Sm8900 (talk) 17:19, 19 August 2019 (UTC)

How does News content update?

Greetings UnitedStatesian - at Portal:Catholicism/News how does the Template:Transclude selected current events know when to display Catholicism articles? Is it now automatic? Regards, JoeHebda (talk)

@JoeHebda: thanks for the question. That particular template instance automatically takes the six latest Portal:Current events entries that contain the strings "Catholic" (so "Catholics" and "Catholicism" would also be picked up), "Vatican", "Pope", or "Cardinal" (all of which are caps. sensitive), or goes back just one year if there are fewer than six over that time. Hopefully frees up your editing/maintenance time for other areas. Any other questions (or suggestions), let me know. UnitedStatesian (talk) 14:27, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
@UnitedStatesian: - Thanks for the answer. The automation is great. 1. How do those articles get archived at Portal:Catholicism/News/Archive? 2. How does the right side image get changed? 3. Previously it was suggested to have only 4 articles. 4. Is there any way to shorten the individual entries? Perhaps with at "Read more" link? Sorry for all the questions, but I thought to ask while fresh in my mind. JoeHebda (talk) 14:38, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
@JoeHebda: no worries, here's each answer. 1) There is not yet an automatic way to archive the articles, but I added commented instructions in the Edit Source view of Portal:Catholicism/News/Archive on how to subst the latest current events onto that page. 2) Changing the image would still be manual. 3) The number displayed is controlled by the |max= parameter; I just set that to 4. 4) The entries come over "as is" from the individual daily subpages of Portal:Current events, so you could edit those subpages to shorten one or more of the entries, but there is no way to have a "read more" link. UnitedStatesian (talk) 14:50, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
@UnitedStatesian: - Good answers. Hopefully last question - In case of "false hits" then, just delete entry? For example "Alexander Pope" or any person "Pope"; "St. Louis Cardinals",baseball. JoeHebda (talk) 18:10, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
@JoeHebda: Unfortunately the parameters would need to be edited, temporarily removing the one that created the false hit until it no longer appeared in the top 4. (this means editors need to keep an eye on the news section: it is not "set it and forget it"). I have modified the "Cardinal" parameter so that it only returns the singular and not the plural, which should reduce the likelihood. (don't think there's much risk of Alexander Pope being in the news these days.) 18:33, 28 August 2019 (UTC)

Northeast North America Wind Storm

There has been a "historical" wind and rain storm in northeast North America from October 31 to November 1/2. It left up to 100 mm of rain (in just a few hours) in some places, and winds up to 110 km/h have uprooted trees, broken branches, and torn down power lines. In Québec province alone, almost one million clients of power company Hydro-Québec lost power—more than at any time since the historical Ice Storm of 1998. Many had no power for 24 hours or more, and some 56,000 are still without power now (morning of November 4).

I see no mention of this in the Current events page. Can someone write something? (I'm currently at work and have no time.)

Thanks

  • Strong oppose - Changing from "Portal" to "Wikipedia" will imply that this is a WikiProject. This is the official definition of a WikiProject: "A WikiProject is a group of editors interested in collaborating on a specific topic within Wikipedia. A WikiProject is a group of people, not a set of pages, a subject area, or a category. The pages of a WikiProject serve as a central place for coordination, discussion, and organization of the group's activities related to the specific topic. WikiProject pages may be used to develop criteria, maintain various collaborative processes, keep track of work that needs to be done, and act as a forum where relevant issues may be discussed."
The CE Portal is not a group of people. It is definitely a subject area (current affairs around the world). To debase the CE page to, essentially, a WikiProject is insane as well as inappropriate. Kiteinthewind Leave a message! 13:50, 19 December 2019 (UTC)

With regards to 'portals', 'projects', and 'namespaces' (recently voted against changing)

I can see the arguments for and against both, and understand why you believe it wouldn't make sense to move it, but I believe that might be because it doesn't fit *either* type of existing thing correctly. Perhaps the better solution would be to make up a new namespace/category-type merely called 'Current Events' with subtypes for types of events (sort of like how object-oriented programming works, though I'm probably not explaining my idea clearly). So something like a Current Events main page will keep headings and each of those headings will be able to be pulled into yearly pages for things like disasters, elections, weather, major awards and prizes, entertainment (as applicable; stuff like 'new records for opening weekend' I assume would go in sections like this), politics in various countries, etc. Since sub-categories are already being done, this would actually be easier anyway to formalize. I dunno. It really isn't a portal. But it also really isn't a project (this is true). Make sense? Could be I'm trying to describe this too abstractly (or that it'd be difficult for 'regular people' to follow in practice)? Then things like Current Events: Yearly, Monthly, Daily can be aggregated and things like deaths can be merged in or out instead of being selectively chosen like they currently are, for example -- and the yearly pages for things like '20__ in Science' and '20__ in Literature' and the like can be more easily shifted between the two so people don't have to look at subpages in the same way. Again, I'm not sure I'm explaining myself correctly, but I'd be happy to expound. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.88.88.156 (talk) 18:18, 23 December 2019 (UTC)

A question about how the 'deaths' are chosen

How are they chosen? I mean no offense to Algeria when I state this, but is there some reason an Algerian general is listed, for instance, as opposed to a dead Premier or Prime Minister (Cain, Mujezinović)? One reason I was suggesting a change might be a good idea. Seems far more egalitarian and less likely to offend if one country's dead politicians, entertainers, writers, etc aren't given more attention than another on the Current Events page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.88.88.156 (talk) 18:30, 23 December 2019 (UTC)

"Ongoing"

The explosion of the "ongoing" section is a part of precedent creep that has probably stretched that section to more than what it was originally intended for - that is, to cover topics that remain in the news for an extended period of time. The section clearly serves a useful purpose, not just for truly "ongoing" events, but also for events in which a single blurb is not adequate to capture the nuances and consequences of what is taking place. Hence, I propose again that we take after the approach at the German Wikipedia to simply convert the ongoing section as a repository for "topics of recent interest" - and modify the existing rules to allow for items of notability to appear on the front page of Wikipedia even if it is not itself a discrete event. For example, today one might have links to the List of Middle East peace proposals, Huawei, and Harvey Weinstein. In other words, not every ITN nomination must be "blurbed", topics or articles can be nominated as a standalone link. Point is, not everything that is important that is currently happening can be captured in a "blurb", nor should it be necessary. We are an encyclopedia, we are not a news ticker, the point of ITN is to showcase articles related to things "in the news", not just specific "events" that are in the news.
For those interested in discussion please DO NOT simply respond to this proposal with "oppose" or "support", which despite being a proud ITN tradition is needlessly adversarial. The point is to come to a community consensus on this - since one seems to be emerging organically anyway. Colipon+(Talk) 23:09, 29 January 2020 (UTC)

Is this why the stock market crash is no longer listed under this portal anymore? Victionarier (talk) 21:52, 14 March 2020 (UTC)

@Victionarier: It's still listed in this portal, meaning at Portal:Current events#2020 March 12. If you refer to {{In the news}} then the content is decided at the "Nominate an article" link. Black Thursday is currently pulled at Wikipedia:In the news/Candidates#(Pulled again - Attention needed) Black Thursday (section link may stop working if heading is changed). Pandemic: US "police warnings"

In Portal:Current events/2020 March 25 I had removed the blurb "2020 coronavirus pandemic in Pennsylvania -> Pennsylvania State Police issue 27 warnings to business continuing to operate despite being ordered to close by Governor Tom Wolf's order to close. (WGAL)" summarizing it "not that important - other countries have hundreds of arrests..."

I was reverted by Dcunn1993 who wrote "Wikipedia has been keeping up with day to day specifics per state in the US since the start of the virus". Yes, Wikipedia has been keeping up with day to day specifics since the start of the virus per hundrends of locations. But "27 police warnings to businesses" are not so much notable than hundrends of arrests in other countries 1600 arrests in Jordany, 250 arrests in Greece, extreme fines etc. There a lot of imporant news and events around the pandemic, we cannot put them all in current events. In fact, some "police warnings" would be never notable enough to be mentioned in a Current events section. They happen every day, per any occasion. -Geraki (talk) 11:14, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

Beginning a Teaching session for this portal

So I have been a Wikipedia editor for about 8 months now. I have worked mainly on this portal and I feel like I am somewhat known in this portal's main editors. I am wanting to help anyone new to the portal or Wikipedia and teach/train them about this portal. I want to help anyone wanting to learn and I want to teach them what is something worth this portal vs something for that countries 2020 portal. If you would like help, feel free to message me here or on my talkpage : User talk:Elijahandskip. Have a good day to anyone who reads this. Elijahandskip (talk) 21:25, 7 April 2020 (UTC)

Add to message above. I revived the Wikipedia:WikiProject Current events. Elijahandskip (talk) 21:57, 8 April 2020 (UTC)

Coronavirus in South Africa

I think South Africa has received little recognition for the coronavirus. When there were still less than 1000 confirmed cases in South Africa, 27 March (Friday) South Africa started their 3 week lockdown (And before the end of week 3, were told 2 more weeks were being added). Because of the early lockdown the cases in South Africa have shot up rapidly. Instead it was a very slow increase( at time of writing there are 2 272 confirmed cases and 27 deaths -14 April ). South Africa has not been mentioned in non South African newspapers or news website. I feel it would be nice for South Africa to have a little recognition. TheWikiAddictReturns (talk) 10:18, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

Every country has its own story of how it has coped with the pandemic. You can get to the articles on individual countries from the main page link under Coronavirus "by location", and then the appropriate continent article, or via the template {{2019–20 coronavirus pandemic}} at the bottom of the location page. Either route will lead to the article 2020 coronavirus pandemic in South Africa for a detailed account of South Africa's story.-gadfium 22:38, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

Recent death : Laisenia Qarase

Laisenia Qarase, former Fiji PM bookended by coups, dies at 79. Source : https://www.rnz.co.nz/international/pacific-news/414735/laisenia-qarase-former-fiji-pm-bookended-by-coups-dies-at-79 --Tensa Februari (talk) 01:42, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

If you want this to appear on the front page of Wikipedia, you need to propose it at WP:ITN/C. The regular people there probably don't read this talk page. The article will need to be in good shape to be eligble for the front page, so you will need to do some work on sourcing it. The people at ITN/C may help. You can also add the news item to an individual page of the current events portal, in this case Portal:Current events/2020 April 21.-gadfium 05:33, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

Potentially adding a new category for coronavirus related news?

A large quantity of this portal is coronavirus related issues. Perhaps we should consider creating a Coronavirus related section to collate all of this information. Chess (talk) Ping when replying 03:21, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

It's getting a little overwhelming. Its not front page news that whatever town in Lithuania cancelled school for a couple weeks or that country X has diagnosed its Nth case. PoangSitter (talk) 03:43, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
I agree... we need to either create a subsection of daily coronavirus related issues or just include milestone events. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 00:59, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
@Chess: Unless a centralized discussion is held someplace, nothing will be done. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 01:25, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
@Knowledgekid87: WP:ITN now has a coronavirus specific template. There's no reason why we can't collate stuff either. Chess (talk) Ping when replying 00:55, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
Hiding "bad" news is totally counterproductive and unhelpful. That's what they do in dictatorships. TomCat4680 (talk) 01:50, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
Who is mentioning "bad news" here? We should be providing balanced coverage here as we already have a section for ongoing events. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 02:25, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
Almost anything having to do with a pandemic is by definition "bad" news. Until they develop a helpful treatment, vaccine, or cure, there's not going be any "good" news. Either way you shouldn't hide a huge section of the most important news of the day. TomCat4680 (talk)
I think you're missing the point Tom. We're not trying to "hide" this news because it's bad, no one has said that. But I don't think we need to flood the current event daily palette with line items about literally every individual country, especially when the events often aren't individually significant. Drailing56 —Preceding undated comment added 17:01, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
Yeah go tell the thousands of people infected that they're not significant. Tell the news people on TV/radio/print that have been talking about it nonstop all week it's insignificant. Tell governors that have closed schools and banned large crowds/events its insignificant. Tell the kids who can't get school meals they're insignificant. Tell the sports leagues, TV series, and Broadway plays that have ended/postponed their seasons/productions its insignificant. Tell the people who can't go to work and pay their bills they're insignificant. TomCat4680 (talk) 21:15, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
Tom cat, we can list GENERAL effects, that large crowds have been banned, schools have been close, events have been cancelled under many jurisdictions, etc, and we are in agreement that by all means all of that's very significant; however, we must NOT be nit-picky about the little details, like which jurisdictions have taken these actions (e.g. listing that country X has banned travel for this many weeks, state Y has shut down schools until so-and-so date, etc.). Do you understand the difference between general and specific outcomes? Victionarier (talk) 22:01, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
No, I don't because they haven't been defined. What's the consensus on what's "general" enough (just federal or also state/province?) and what's too "specific" (county and/or city?) Until there is one, nothing should be hidden/deleted. TomCat4680 (talk) 22:06, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
The consensus appears to be against you here, we have to provide balanced coverage around the world. Reporting on coronavirus related issues should be limited to the most important breakthroughs. There is a reason for example, on why we are not filling up the current events section with daily updates on the war in Donbass. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 23:15, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
What consensus? You didn't answer any of my questions. How am I supposed to follow the "rules" if I don't know what they are? What's "important" and what isn't? TomCat4680 (talk) 23:30, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
I also want to add that many of the unfolding events are becoming WP:ROUTINE coverage which is already being collected in separate articles. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 23:20, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
So people looking for news updates have to read every article instead of seeing them all in one place? You know it's affected 140 countries right? Plus several industries (business/finance, television, cinema, sports, special events, etc.) What should be included and excluded? You're being too "general", you need to be more "specific". Don't link to or quote from a guideline either. I want your own words. This is a special instance since worldwide pandemics are pretty rare. TomCat4680 (talk) 23:35, 14 March 2020 (UTC)

My suggestion: the only coronavirus related news on the Portal:Current_events are any of the following (note the examples are examples, not actual events):

  1. Significant milestones in recoveries/deaths/cases - i.e. 10k, 50k, 100k, 500k, 1M, 5M, 10M, etc.
  2. Significant, national news - i.e. Japan orders all schools closed or Mongolia declares a state of emergency
  3. Significant cities of greater than 500k/1M/some-population with full recovery - i.e. New York City has been declared free of COVID-19
  4. Major scientific breakthroughs or discoveries - i.e. a cure for the coronavirus has been found - but not "SARS-CoV-2 has certain impacts on the brain" (too inspecific)
  5. Major national geopolitical changes - i.e. Germany declares martial law, some country falls into anarchy (extreme but you get the point)
  6. Major coronavirus-related events - i.e. United Nations permenantly suspends meetings (intentionally vague for future discussion)

Add a comma

Change "In horse racing, Tiz the Law wins the Belmont Stakes, which serves as the initial leg of the Triple Crown for the first time." to "In horse racing, Tiz the Law wins the Belmont Stakes, which serves as the initial leg of the Triple Crown, for the first time." The previous sentence suggests that the Belmont Stakes is serving as the initial leg of the Triple Crown for the first time, which, to my knowledge, is incorrect. I cannot edit that part of the page. Hundreds of people "riot" in Portland?

The line preceding the CNN link, "Hundreds of people gather and riot in Portland, Oregon, marking the 66th night of protests in the city", is problematic. Hundreds of people did gather, but they did not riot. If there was any rioting, it was done by certain individuals, but definitely not by the "hundreds of people". Whoever typed the line made a statement full of weasel words and not supported by fact.RickRiffel2020 (talk) 01:33, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
