All green[edit]

Is it all green to anyone else? TimBentley (talk) 02:32, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Whats so bad about green? :) --TBC??? ??? ??? 03:08, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Not being able to read the words underneath the green (the associated Wikimedia box covers everything else). The problem started when the topics section was added. But I checked it in IE, where it works; it's only a problem in Firefox. Odd. TimBentley (talk) 04:07, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, I think I've fixed the problem. Can you see the text now? --TBC??? ??? ??? 04:37, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it's good now. TimBentley (talk) 16:01, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Food color[edit]

I found an interesting tidbit on a natural food that turns blue when cooked. Murre egg whites turn blue and the yolks turn red when cooked (found in Ripley's Believe It or Not!). Are there any aritcles or lists on foods by color or odd foods?

Todo: Mention/link the beer portal somewhere in the Food Portal. feydey 00:01, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I took the liberty of inserting a line and a picture related to the new article I just created on food and cuisine in the Middle Ages. I've never worked with portals before, but I assumed it was okay. Naturally, I would greatly appreciate any comments or additions concerning the article.

Peter Isotalo 13:12, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've reverted it since this month's DYK has already been chosen. Even so, I'll make sure that the Medieval cuisine article is included in next month's DYK.--TBCTaLk?!? 18:09, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The problem with paletería request[edit]

The portal lists a request for the article "paleteria" (sic). I can create one, but I'm not at all convinced we need one, vs. creating a redirect to some existing article. All a "paletería" is, is a shop or company that makes and/or sells frozen desserts, particularly ice pops (similar to the products of Popsicle, Good Humor, or Holanda), and in some cases, ice cream. "Paletería" is a Spanish word that means "shop/company that sells paletas" (frozen desserts on a stick).

Can someone suggest a good article to which I could redirect? If necessary, I could add to the article to address the specific usage "paletería." Please reply on my talk page. Lawikitejana 04:58, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Update: After running across the article on paletas, I simply created redirects for the accented and unaccented spellings of paletería and added a line to that article. Lawikitejana 20:26, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Templates?[edit]

Am I overlooking something, or is there no kind of template we can place on Talk pages to alert people to the Food portal, the way one does with WikiProjects? If I'm overlooking one, please post a message to my Talk page, as I wanted to add one to "macaroni and cheese and some other food articles I've seen. Lawikitejana 20:26, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Medieval cuisine up for peer review[edit]

I'm working on getting the article up to FA-standards and your input would be much appreciated. Don't be shy now. Any and all comments (or criticisms) are beneficial.

Leftovers[edit]

Hi, I'm not part of this project, but I thought it might be nice to let active participants know I've added some real content to Leftovers to replace the redirect to recipe, which didn't have anything related to leftovers at all. (I was shocked when I discovered I couldn't find any real info on leftovers at all.) I also moved and edited the doggie bag info from take-out, where it didn't seem to fit, and changed a bunch of redirects appropriately. The new article is a bit stubby and can use some cites, but is a good start, I hope. -dmmaus 04:57, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Help[edit]

"Comestible"[edit]

Why bother with a synonym for "edible" that's 1000 times less common?

Because an comestible is a noun and edible is an adjective. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.175.81.251 (talk) 21:15, 7 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Merger proposal[edit]

As Portal:Cooking and Portal:Food are pretty much the same thing except in name heading and the Food Portal is a featured portal that is updated on a regular basis and the Cooking Portal has all but been abandoned, I propose any relevant information be merged into the Food Portal and the Cooking Portal be changed to a redirect to the Food Portal.--Chef Christopher Allen Tanner, CCC 19:00, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I would support this merger if the portal became "cooking & food"...since there are definite discussions in each topic that are distinct from the other (examples include politics of food, history of food (separate of cooking processes but more focused on culture). --Ryandwayne 20:51, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think putting "cooking and food" is unnecessary as it gives equal emphasis to cooking, when "cooking is something you do to food", you do not "do food to cooking." I can see your argument if it was the "culinary portal," as Culinary history is clearly different from Food history as we study them in my Masters degree program in Gastronomy, but clearly again, one can not have "culinary" without food. We can have food without culinary though, just as we can have food without cooking, but we can not cook without food (I think I made sense in there somewhere).--Chef Christopher Allen Tanner, CCC 05:35, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'd support this. I also think that cooking is a subset of food subjects, and doesn't need to be underscored as such, just 'Food' remaining the title would be fine with me. --Thespian 05:21, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Selected in more than one category[edit]

I noticed that I added articles like durian and black pepper to the selected articles eventhough they are already included among the selected ingredients. Should we consider this a problem or not? If yes, how should we address it? Peter Isotalo 15:22, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it's much of a problem, as these two things are both ingredients and food. Puffin Let's talk! 18:12, 8 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Selected Pics/ Food[edit]

DYK Needs an Edit[edit]

{{editprotected}} I fixed the barbeque DYK, but the view on the portal needs to be edited to match. The correct version is:

  • ...that barbeque translates as "sacred fire pit" and is also spelled "barbicoa" or "barabicoa"?

The vandalized version on the (protected) portal view is:

  • ...that barbeque translates as "sacred fire pit" and is also spelled "barbicoa" or "doughnuts"?

DYK suggestion[edit]

I've been told to request, rather than include, an article for Selected articles - Food waste in the United Kingdom. It's already a GA and approaching FA standard and the portal so far does not seem to cover any of the issues it brings up, so it would a niche for readers. MasterOfHisOwnDomain (talk) 08:18, 25 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

US Article[edit]

The United States article (now a FAC) has an unreferenced sentence: "Frequent dining at fast food outlets is associated with what health officials call the American obesity epidemic". Can anyone find a reference? GeometryGirl (talk) 16:55, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know whether any of these: Fast-food culture serves up super-size Americans, Fast Food Linked To Child Obesity and a BBC news report, which takes into account the UK as well (perhaps giving the argument more stomach! (sorry that was awful...)) UK and US 'keenest on fast food'. MasterOfHisOwnDomain (talk) 13:11, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Essential Oil Pics[edit]

User:Itineranttrader to add photos of glass vials to a lot of articles. I stumbled upon a few of them and my first reaction to them was just puzzlement. I have no idea why the oil is depicted at all, I don't see the information gained, and the pics are similar enough that I checked it's more than one. To the contrary, for me the photo implied (before I found out how widespread they are) that there is something special going on with the oil. Of course that's not the case at all.

So, I think most articles are better off without the pics. What do you think?

In any case, I don't see the point of adding "in a clear glass vial" to the description. It's distracting (again) and obvious. Descriptions should be concise. --91.10.55.135 (talk) 19:55, 11 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The oil pics are okey and are a great contribution IMO. The "clear glass vial" description doesn't make any sense. Gonna remove some of the descriptions... --178.197.236.241 (talk) 21:57, 20 May 2014 (UTC) I opted out for a compromise and removed "in a clear glass vial" (finally!) where it spared a line. Looks a lot better now... --178.197.236.241 (talk) 22:47, 20 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I added the images of the different essential oils for several reasons. I work for a very large essential oil company, and I had access to a large variety of essential oils. If you look at the whole catalogue of images, you will notice that there is a great deal of variation in color and tone among the essential oils. Also, in many cases, I was able to replace images of a branded bottle, usually of dark amber or cobalt blue glass, in which the color and tone of the essential oil was not visible at all. Good call on making the description shorter. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Itineranttrader (talkcontribs) 00:05, 4 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

High importance article- Human nutrition[edit]

I am in the process of editing Human Nutrition, and having trouble organizing the different challenges involved with malnutrition. There needs to be consideration not only for the individual effects that malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies can have on an individual, but also a consideration of the social affects of widespread malnutrition issues. The organizational structure of malnutrition needs some more work I believe. Does the following structure provide a better combination of the previous article and the new social information that needs to be incorporated?

Individual nutrition challenges

4.2.3.1 Illnesses caused by improper nutrient consumption

4.2.3.3 Mental agility

4.2.3.4 Mental disorders

4.2.3.5 Cancer

4.2.3.6 Metabolic syndrome and obesity

4.2.3.7 Hyponatremia

Global nutrition challenges

2.1 Malnutrition and causes of death and disability

2.2 Child malnutrition

2.3 Adult overweight and obesity

2.4 Vitamin and mineral malnutrition

2.4.1 Iron deficiency and anaemia

2.4.2 Vitamin A deficiency

2.4.3 Iodine deficiency

2.5 Infant and young child feeding

2.6 Undernourishment

Are there any comments on this structure? Thank you Lbockhorn (talk) 15:21, 25 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
