New advisory procedure

I found this message from the NWS:

EFFECTIVE MAY 15 2008...THE TROPICAL PREDICTION CENTER/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER /NHC/ WILL CHANGE THE ISSUANCE CRITERIA FOR THE TROPICAL CYCLONE PUBLIC ADVISORY /TCP/ PRODUCT FOR STORMS IN THE EASTERN PACIFIC HURRICANE BASIN. THIS AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY BEGINS AT LONGITUDE 140 DEGREES WEST AND EXTENDS TO THE EAST.

THE FOLLOWING PRODUCTS ARE AFFECTED BY THIS CHANGE:

HURRICANE BASIN AWIPS ID WMO HEADING EASTERN PACIFIC TCPEP/1-5/ WTPZ/31-35/ KNHC

CURRENTLY PUBLIC ADVISORIES FOR THE EASTERN PACIFIC HURRICANE BASIN ARE ISSUED ONLY WHEN TROPICAL OR SUBTROPICAL CYCLONES ARE EXPECTED TO THREATEN LAND AREAS WITHIN 48 HOURS. EFFECTIVE MAY 15 2008...PUBLIC ADVISORIES WILL BE ISSUED FOR ALL EASTERN PACIFIC TROPICAL OR SUBTROPICAL CYCLONES...REGARDLESS OF PROXIMITY TO LAND AREAS.

THIS CHANGE IN ISSUANCE CRITERIA FOR EASTERN PACIFIC /TCP/ PRODUCTS PROVIDES A UNIFORM SERVICE LEVEL ACROSS THE ATLANTIC...EASTERN PACIFIC...AND CENTRAL PACIFIC HURRICANE BASINS. THERE ARE NO OTHER CHANGES TO THE PRODUCT.

http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/notification/scn08-13trop_cyc-epac.txt

That means that full advisories will be available for all EPAC storms, including fish storms (which most are). CrazyC83 (talk) 03:21, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

That is good news as there is not point having Public Advisorys for all CPAC and atlantic storms and not having them for Epac storms. However it begs the question are they going to issue public advisorys for storms before 15th May Jason Rees (talk) 01:18, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi Hurricanehink. I was wondering, if TD 01-E survives the landfall and emerges into the Caribbean or GOM, and strengthens into a tropical storm, what would it be named? Arthur or Alma? Weatherlover819 (talk) 06:14, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

I don't think these type of articles (very weak cyclones over open water) are needed during the operation of the storm (or maybe never). It makes it much more annoying to update and all the info available could go in this article. -CWY2190(talkcontributions) 15:29, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Running best track

The NHC and JTWC began a running best track in July of 2007. They contain the final track information months in advance. Please use the information placed on the tracks with the information on this page. In the best track, Boris's winds were increased to 80mph and the pressure was lowered to 985mb. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 02:29, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

Sweet! Link? ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:31, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
Here it is. [1] Never would have noticed it changed. -CWY2190(talkcontributions) 02:34, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
I am concerned at using that if there is a substantial change. If that is a running best track, that means it is able to be changed at any time. I would personally rather use the operational data until the TCR comes out, but that's just me. After all, the advisories are the most visible. The running best track seems a bit secretive. One last question which might change my mind - did any of the storms from last year have their intensities changed between when the running best track was released, and when the TCR came out? ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:54, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
I'm sure there were. Afterall, they just ammended the TCR track of Dean a few months ago. Weather or not to use the running BT, I say yes. But I don't care either way. -CWY2190(talkcontributions) 02:57, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

Sorry I forgot to include the link to the page. This site contains all the best tracks for 2008. Changes, if any, to the tracks are updated about 12-24 hours after the initial warning for that time. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 18:28, 6 July 2008 (UTC) For the changes in best track in the TCR, I think they change it in the running best track first. They changed the track for Boris around when it reached 80mph twice. The first changed it to it only having held category one status for 6 hours instead of 12. the second changed it back to 12 hours but increased it to 80mph. The NHC didn't include the updates for the best track until this year, and they started later than the JTWC, Felix was the first with the track on that site. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 18:50, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

The running best track for Fausto downgraded it to a Category One with peak winds of 90mph (two separate times). This may be because of the 3 hour difference in advisory times but we'll have to wait until the TCR comes out to verify that i guess. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 17:00, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

I don't see any need for an article on Hernan. It didn't affect any land, it didn't set any records, and overall there wasn't much of anything special about it. However, if you are interested in article writing, there are plenty of older storms that either have articles and need work, or caused some impact on land but do not have an article. Or, if you want to focus on Hernan, you could always work on the section in the season article. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:16, 10 August 2008 (UTC) This article dose not need to be merged if you look and the to do section of this page —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.193.254.254 (talk) 17:25, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Also, I see nowhere Cyclonebiskit objecting, so may I ask if you're lying to further your opinion? –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 19:27, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
I have no objection to this, there's no reason for the article other than personal interest, and I agree with JC, this article is horribly written. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 18:49, 14 September 2008 (UTC)
No more merge is my guess now, I'm almost done with the Meteorological history section, which was significantly expanded, and the intro paragraph will be updated shortly after and then the article should be complete (well, reasonably at least). Cyclonebiskit (talk) 22:41, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Sounds good. Do you want to add anything about naming to the impact section? That seems to be the default way to expand such short articles (eg. Tropical Storm Lee (2005), Tropical Storm Erick (2007)). ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 23:08, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Can't really add anything about the naming until the TCR comes out. Also, the article is finally done. It's taken a lot of procrastination, aggravation, and time to get it done but it's there. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 23:19, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
It looks good. And no, you don't need the TCR about the naming. We already know what previous storms were named Hernan. For citing purposes, you could use the EPAC best track. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 23:33, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Ok, I added that it was the fifth time a tropical storm was named Hernan in the EPac. Anything else I should add? Cyclonebiskit (talk) 23:45, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

I would personally add the years, since the 1996 and 2002 ones have articles. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 23:46, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
BTW, the first paragraph in the SH needs sources. You could wait for the TCR to provide an early history (but that would mean you couldn't GA nom it in the meantime), or you could use the ftp://ftp.met.fsu.edu/pub/weather/tropical/Outlook-P TWO's] and TWD's. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 23:50, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Ok, how should I add the other uses into the article? Also, my computer can't open the discussions so if it's not a problem, can you add it in for me? Cyclonebiskit (talk) 23:55, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Something like, "Hurricane Hernan was used previously in 1984, 1990, 1996, and 2002." Have you tried opening the TWD's and TWO's in Internet Explorer? They don't work for me on Firefox, but they always work on IE. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:35, 27 September 2008 (UTC)
I'll give it a try, thanks. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 16:52, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

Support, although preparations and impact will need to be added when available. The general rule for the EPAC is for land-impacting storms (excluding depressions unless there is significant damage) to have articles, while storms remaining at sea generally do not warrant such regardless of strength. The formation of Marie means that this is the first season using this name list to reach the letter M since 1990! Although this is "interesting?" trivia, I doubt it's really worthy of adding to the article. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 00:39, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

There are 6 lists. All that sentence says is that 1996 and 2002 had less than 15 storms... not a particularly exciting fact. Plasticup T/C 16:37, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

Least active September for EPac

In the NHC Monthly Summary, it states that "OVERALL TROPICAL CYCLONE ACTIVITY DURING SEPTEMBER WAS THE LOWEST EVER RECORDED SINCE RELIABLE RECORDS BEGAN IN 1971." I think that this phrase or any related phrase should be added to the article, as it is notable. It also states that "IN TERMS OF THE ACCUMULATED CYCLONE ENERGY INDEX (ACE)...SEPTEMBER 2008 HAD A VALUE OF ONLY 9% OF THE LONG-TERM AVERAGE." This should be noted, too. Weatherlover819 (talk) 09:15, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Pilover819, we should include this in the season impact.Leave Message orYellow Evan home 16:33, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

The statement was "OVERALL TROPICAL CYCLONE ACTIVITY DURING SEPTEMBER WAS THE LOWEST EVER RECORDED SINCE RELIABLE RECORDS BEGAN IN 1971." The NHC may be using ACE as a measure. Both 1988 and 1979 had one September named storm (1988 had at two depressions, one of which was a continuation of Debby from the Atlantic; 1979 had one storm and one depressionsee p. 639) The only other possibilities that I can think of are that the NHC is considering downgrading Karina (one NCDC site does not include it [6]) while another one does (although it is obviously based at least partly on our article! [7]), and the NHC mentions that "ONLY TWO TROPICAL STORMS WERE NOTED DURING THE MONTH AND THERE WERE NO HURRICANES" so they may not be going to downgrade Karina after all. For these reasons, I think we should wait until the Karina summary comes out before including the above. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 22:57, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

Whoa, no language please Plasticup. Don't worry, if he makes more articles like the one he did for Hernan, I'll do the same thing. Rewrite the whole thing. I hope you don't make them regardless Yellow Evan, this is supposed to be a useful source of information, not a place to mess around and create poorly written articles that most wont understand. It will take me longer to rewrite them now, especially if he makes the one for Boris, the longer lived, the harder it is for me because of school. Ones like Karina are my specialty. I already have planned to save the article for Lowell tomorrow into thursday, because of an extended holiday weekend :). If he makes any on storms you don' like, just send me the link and I'll see what I can do. Also post it in the Project talk page, so others can work on them too, just so I'm not being selfish lol.
And Yellow Evan, I have planned to do so myself already. I have the articles for Iselle and TD 05-E in the making right now, I'm going slowly because there aren't many TCR's out, which means any article on a storm without one might need major updates when it does come out.Cyclonebiskit (talk) 14:27, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

BTW, this season is now extremely likely to become the first one since 1996 to have no cyclones cross into the CPac from the east, the first since 1979 to have no cyclones enter the CPac from either direction. By the still have two right Kikia uless Polo somehow makes it there. Leave Message ,Yellow Evan home ,Sandbox[ 01:27, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

No tropical systems crossed into the CPac this year, Kika formed in the CPac, doesn't count as a cross-basin storm. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 01:35, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

As remnant lows Boris, Hernan, and I think Marie did, but remnant lows aren't considered tropical systems. Eighteen-E might make it, but the way it looks now, it seems like it will dissipate before reaching 140°W Cyclonebiskit (talk) 01:40, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
elida did to . How close is Sixteen-E away from the 140 line. If it manged to do it will it be a recored. Leave Message ,Yellow Evan home ,Sandbox[ 01:44, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

It it made it there it would proboly be a hurricane at one piont and would set many records. Leave Message ,Yellow Evan home ,Sandbox[ 01:47, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

All storms have the potential to break records. Let's try to avoid speculation. Cheers, –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 01:49, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
Most of the November records are held by 2006. Sergio hold both the longest lived and strongest. It's possible that Eighteen could surpass Sergio in longevity, but not intensity. Eighteen-E is 2,061 miles due west from 140°W. However, since the storm is not going to stay on a due west track, it will take hundreds of extra miles to get there. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 01:51, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

What is the latest basin crossover? Leave Message ,Yellow Evan home ,Sandbox[ 04:11, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Another question any CPAC storms in November? Leave Message ,Yellow Evan home ,Sandbox[ 04:27, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

The CPHC lists ten. They are: Huko (2002), 3-C (1992), Iwa (1982), Ruby (1972), Ramona (1967), Nina (1957), Unnamed (1906), Unnamed (1904), Unnamed (1874), Unnamed (1858). There is also Paka, which was a November depression but didn't become a storm until December. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 04:33, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
This includes October systems that lasted into November. The November formations are 3C, Iwa, Ruby Nina, and the 4 unnameds. All of these systems formed in the central Pacific. Ramona formed in the east and later entered the central. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 04:36, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Yes, the NHC does go more than just publish Tropical Cyclone Reports. In any event, they're not terrible far behind schedule. The TCRs are already out for Alma, Boris, Douglas, Five-E, Elida, Hernan and Karina. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 22:09, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
The NHC are not really behind as the last storm in their AOR only dissipated two days ago, and have released 10 of the 36 TCRS. Also you will find that the NHC are further ahead than RSMC Nadi who havent released their ATCR for 2006-07 or 2007-08 yet or the JMA who have only just relased their ATCR for 2007 today.Jason Rees (talk) 22:17, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

Youve got to remeber Yellow that 17E was only last month and so its far too early for that report. Also they have untill March when the WMO meet to do them.
I know they will be saving Norbert, Odile, Polo, Genvieve, Hernan (CPHC), Julio and Lowell for then end. 17-E should is just a 3 paragraph essay. Gilma was realesed that same month and so was Karina. Leave Message ,Yellow Evan home ,Sandbox Happy Veterans day
It's really not doing any good by arguing about the NHC being late. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 22:45, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
True, what could they be possibly be doing when they realesed Alma during Elida and Fausto, two hurricanes. Leave Message ,Yellow Evan home ,Sandbox Happy Veterans day 22:48, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
Hernan never entered the CHPC's AOR as a tropical cyclone, thus no report on it will be issued. Also, you're saying that they are saving a full third of the reports until the last minute? Remember, they do take a lot of time to create since it does contain the final data on the respective storm. It all depends on the activity. Since the season is coming to a close, they can spend more time on them, meaning that more will be coming out soon. November-January is the usual time were the TCR's come out, unless the storm is extremely devastating. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 22:49, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
They did not even do the easy ones. Also, Hernan entered they area as a low and they did a report on Gulermeno a 2003 and the CPHC has nothing to do so they mite as well focus a lot on kikia and might as well do Hernan. Leave Message ,Yellow Evan home ,Sandbox Happy Veterans day 22:57, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
Actully Yellow the CPHC have got things to do - as they help RSMC Nadi monitor the SPac, also they only issued a report on Guillermo in 2003 as they operationally thought it was a Tropical depression when it crossed 140W Jason Rees (talk) 23:07, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned references in 2008 Pacific hurricane season

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of 2008 Pacific hurricane season's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Merge?

There are ten storm articles. Five of which are clearly keepable, four of which should likely be axed before this goes to GAN (Elida, Fausto, Hernan, Karina), and a fifth is iffy (Five-E). All 5 can easily fit in the season section without any info loss. YE Pacific Hurricane 02:13, 19 July 2017 (UTC)

I would axe Julio before Five-E since the TD did more damage.—CycloneIsaac (Talk) 02:18, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
Julio is missing stuff from StormData, so that can be expanded. YE Pacific Hurricane 02:21, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
I would axe four - Elida, Fausto, Hernan, and Karina. The others have enough land impact. Hurricanehink mobile (talk) 13:04, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
Five-E's MH is (or at least should be if CB hadn't written so many bloated MH's in 2008) so short though. However, given that TAWX has already written Five-E's section, and given that there is some objection towards Five-E so I feel the article still existing isn't problematic at GAN, so I don't see the point in the merger. YE Pacific Hurricane 15:30, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
Karina definitely needs to be axed, it was a very weak storm that didnt do anything and lasted for only like 1 day. EDIT: I went ahead and merged Karina while properly following GA-delist instructions. --MarioProtIV (talk/contribs) 20:33, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
Any reason you merged Karina and not the other systems? Just curious. Fausto, Hernan, and Elida don't have enough content that can't be shoved without losing info for stand alone articles. YE Pacific Hurricane 20:49, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
Doing one by one. Will get to those other ones soon. :P --MarioProtIV (talk/contribs) 20:50, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
Ok. I just don't want this to fall by the wayside. YE Pacific Hurricane 20:52, 19 July 2017 (UTC)

Hold on. If you're going to merge, make sure the content ends up in the season article. There is no reason for there to be *no* good coverage of Karina on Wikipedia. It has no sources right now. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 20:53, 19 July 2017 (UTC)

Better now. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 20:57, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
I wouldn't throw a temper tantrum. I'm willing to bet that TAWX will re-write the section anyway like he always does. YE Pacific Hurricane 20:59, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
I salvaged the MH from Karina's former article but condensed it and removed jargon that really doesn't need to be there. --MarioProtIV (talk/contribs) 21:02, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
which is exactly what you're suppose to do. Good job. YE Pacific Hurricane 21:03, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
