text explaining trades and free agency in each section

[edit]

I don't see how or why it's necessary, the previous years draft pages don't have it and if anyone wants to find out what they are, they could refer to the AFL Draft page — Preceding unsigned comment added by MGR9883 (talkcontribs) 07:59, 3 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've tinkered it as some of it is necessary, where other parts aren't. The description of a free agent has been linked to the free agent page. Also, because something isn't on a previous page doesn't mean it shouldn't be on succeeding ones, as this provides more clarification to this periods' free agency. I see what you mean about consistency, but this information improves the page Flickerd (talk) 13:25, 3 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If you only removed the generic stuff, then fine, but please use the edit summary to explain your thoughts and leave the year specific info. At the moment it just covers the decrease in FA numbers during the year, but info such as Paul Roos' comments on free agency being anti-equalisation and the whole "players moving from bottom to top teams" discussion that's happening at the moment should be included, especially if Frawley does move to the premiers. The text before the table gives a chance to expand and explain more than just a basic summary of the end result that the list/table provides. I'm not endorsing a running commentary or day-by-day summary of events, but when it's all over we need to make sure we explain anything unusual. In the trades section, the significant stories behind the (likely) moves of Ryder, Beams and Clark should all be mentioned - even if they don't happen. Mason Cox

[edit]

How is he considered to have joined? Is it through a draft? --SuperJew (talk) 14:33, 6 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Throughout the year, clubs can name international players or 3-year non-registered players (ie basketball players, runners etc) at any time. The clubs have committed to them, but they only officially join the list when the rookie draft is held, but contracts are signed etc. So Cox was announced a few months ago, may have been training with the Pies (or even playing VFL reserves?), but will only officially become a rookie in December. It's one of these grey "official vs practical" lines, just like how all AFL player contracts run until Oct 31, so uncontracted players are actually still contracted until then, even if they are delisted. Likewise, the father-son players probably don't officially become players until either Nov 1 (if they align with other player contracts) or Nov 27 when called out in the draft, but I'm pretty sure the clubs are fully and irrevocably committed to the players after today's bid meeting. Father/Son and academy players in draft

[edit]

I'm still of the opinion that the players names shouldn't be listed in the draft section until the draft due to the reason that if someone who didn't have knowledge of how the bidding process works then they would be incredibly confused as to why 12 names are in there at random orders before the draft date. However, I'm aware that I'm outnumbered in this argument so there's little point arguing that further. I think listing the dates of the nominations and bidding will provide more clarification, which I will add :) Flickerd (talk) 14:12, 7 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Should we add a legend/template like NBA Draft wikis?

[edit]

Example:

Template:NBA Draft legend 2012 NBA Draft

I think there could be a coloured column for each player. Will take a while to go through but maybe something like:

-Denotes player who has been selected to at least one All-Australian team

-Denotes player who has been rewarded at least one best & fairest at an AFL club

-Denotes player who has been selected to at least one All-Australian team and been rewarded at least one best & fairest

-Denotes player who has yet to play or has never played an AFL game
