People, people, SIGN please!

I live in Halifax myself, and, BTW, supported the games. But, you have to remember to SIGN your posts, here or anywhere on Wiki. It's the little squiggly thing above that sort of looks like a signature. Put it after your posts so it ends like this. >--RobNS 20:38, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Why was this removed?
"Which has caused concern for taxpayers in Canada, Nova Scotia, and the Halifax regional municipality. :As a result, a number of web sites have appeared which are against Halifax's bid. "
This text was added as a result of my research into the these games. A number of usenet new group discussions, not to mention the number of articles in local Canadian news and web sites show that there is opposition. You can be pro or against these games, but you can't deny that there is opposition regardless of your viewpoint. That's a fact.
As a result an opposing view web site was also added. Can you explain why was that removed? Is that web site non-existant? No it exists.
I think it would be best to include these simple statements and additional web link, which showing the ::opposing viewpoint in regards to this. Thus insuring the article is factual and accurate.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.224.232.158 (talk) 11:57, 2 February 2007(UTC)

This is getting out of hand. Numerous sites are poping up all over the web. Anyone else think we should stick to official sites?

Define Official? There are not many links listed IMO. If it grows larger than a dosen per city, you might have a point. Besides who decides which ones get added? Since there's so few, best to leave them. Sorted by Bid City was a good idea. At least 3 or 4 for/against per city would be fine. I think a parse of the full URL should be left in, so one can see the link before judging to go to it. Please update the article

The article says that "the deadline for bids was set for May, 2007." We're in June 2007 now, so the official contenders/bids should be known by now. Transport

Some of the transport projects stated to be fact are still in discussion (such as the Glasgow Crossrail). The current wording suggests they are underway and will be completed when that is not the case. 86.161.91.187 20:04, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

Blogs in External links

Does anyone see any good reason why the recent edits by Lazenbee ought to be an exception to the exclusion of blogs, as described at item 11 of WP:ELNO? His edits have already been reverted a number of times, and he is nearing the WP:3RR mark. - David Biddulph (talk) 13:32, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

As there is no mention of opposition or controversy (unlike the entry on Vancouver Olympics: Vancouver_Olympics#Concerns_and_controversies) in this article and as both these sites are less personal blog sites and more sources of news (albeit with an anti-Games bias), I think they should be left. After all, WP:ELNO states that "one should generally avoid" links to blogs - but avoid doesn't mean never. Lazenbee (talk) 16:24, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
If the anti-Games protests are notable enough (see WP:UNDUE), then they might deserve a sentence or two in the actual article (not in ext links). But we need proper refs, per WP:RS: ie. no blogs thank you. Has there been any significant broadsheet coverage for example? --Mais oui! (talk) 17:59, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
Both blogs that were linked to have a number of stories, some from broadsheets, some from academic journals, that outline both discontent with the Games and mega-events generally. (For example, from a broadsheet: The Real Legacy of the Games; from the BBC there is this: No evidence of games benefits. There is more, and from a diverse variety of sources. Glasgow has an unfortunate history of boosterism and collusion between politicians and the press, so as with the European City of Culture 1990, dissent tends to come from more marginal sources - in this case, blogs. However, if blogs are unacceptable then some discussion of Margaret Jaconelli and the Accord Centre would be merited within the article I think.Lazenbee (talk) 18:20, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
I have no problem whatsoever with mentioning dissent, just as long as it is made clear that it is a minority viewpoint. The Herald and the BBC are fine as reliable ext refs. See WP:VERIFY for how to reference. (Or just put in the raw http and someone will pop along with a bot in a while.) Host city location

The infobox has "Glasgow, Scotland". This is consistent with the 1970 and 1986 Games. There appears to be insufficient reason to add "United Kingdom". The slow edit war on this issue is getting tiresome so this needs to be sorted here otherwise semi-protection may be required. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 23:03, 14 August 2013 (UTC)

Games hosted in England and Wales also include the reference "United Kingdom". I don't see why games hosted by Scotland should be any different. Regardless of the outcome of the referendum next year, Scotland will be part of the UK during the games and was for the previous games. 95.150.108.241 (talk) 23:12, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
Commonwealth Games are, and have always been, for teams from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland etc. The fact that those countries are part of the United Kingdom is irrelevant in this context. The teams represent Nations, not Sovereign countries. As the United Kingdom is the sovereign state, I believe it is factually important to include at least one explicit reference to this fact otherwise it implies something that is not factually true. Field hockey competitions and participating nations

Can we please get a page setup for the field hockey competitions within the 2014 Commonwealth Games as all teams and groups have been confirmed for both the men's and women's competition and also get a section up showing all the participation that participating nations that will be competing in Glasgow in July. The Gambia will NOT be represented

Use of CGF code in medal table

Hi, just wondering if we could use the same format in the medals table as the Olympics (see below for example)

Infobox

Shall we use United Kingdom in the infobox of this article, aswell as all the other Commonwealth Game articles, where the UK is host? IMHO, we should be consistent across these articles, either listing the sovereign state (i.e Canada, New Zeland, Australia, United Kingdom, etc), or we don't. What's your (other editors) view? "United Kingdom" looks a bit redundant to me. And given that Scotland competes as a separate entity at the Games, it seem a bit odd to use the Infobox to try to emphasise that it's not. It's not as if medals are awarded to "Scotland, United Kingdom". Everyone seems to understand just the name Scotland on its own. HiLo48 (talk) 10:50, 24 July 2014 (UTC)
I just figured we had Melbourne, Victoria, Australia; Victoria, British Columbia, Canada & Manchester, England, United Kingdom, so why not Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom. GoodDay (talk) 18:25, 24 July 2014 (UTC)
The first two examples are irrelevant, because the states and provinces of Australia and Canada don't compete as separate entities at the Games. My earlier post addresses your concerns. Do you want to address those comments? HiLo48 (talk) 18:48, 24 July 2014 (UTC)
I understand your original post & have removed United Kingdom from the intros & infoboxes of the Commonwealth Games articles with host cities in the UK. As you've said, the United Kingdom's 4 constituent countries compete as seperate teams in these games. Therefore, this should be reflected in the intros & infoboxes, concerning host cities. Weightlifting - Chika Amalaha

Complaints

I notice that we now have two complaints added to the article, neither appears to be particularly notable in the big scheme of things. Perhaps we should have a list of "Compliments" to balance it out or just delete them as undue weight. MilborneOne (talk) 11:10, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

I have deleted it. These sections are unacceptable. They purely attract negative POV, which is obviously not what we want. I believe WP:CRITS addresses this perfectly. HiLo48 (talk) 11:13, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

Participating countries

Could we please have a map showing all the countries and territories that are taking part in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in line with previous Maps that been placed on pages for previous Commonwealth Games to show which parts of the world are taking part, all that needs to be done is take out The Gambia from the 2010 map and that should be about right, thanks (90.207.53.225 (talk) 21:05, 20 July 2014 (UTC))

I have added a map onto the sectio but it's from the 2010 Delhi Games through the only modifications is needed to the map is to just to remove The Gambia and change the location from Delhi to Glasgow otherwise that is correct map showing all the countries and territories taking part in the 2014 Games! Host Country

We have a user who is trying to change the host country from Scotland to the United Kingdom. It has long been the case and a well known fact that each individual UK home nation is recognised by the Commonwealth Games Foundation as individual countries, therefore, the United Kingdom is non existent within the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF). Host countries are attributed to the competing title, therefore, 2022 Commonwealth Games will be "England" as host country, as England is registered with the CGF, NOT the United Kingdom.

The articles 1934 British Empire Games, 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, 1970 British Commonwealth Games, 1986 Commonwealth Games, 2002 Commonwealth Games and the upcoming 2022 Commonwealth Games do not recognise the UK as a host country, instead they acknowledge the home nation of the UK - Scotland, England or Wales. So, why is it now the case the Glasgow 2014 article should be any different, considering the fact that since this articles creation it has always been acknowledged as Scotland being the host country? Considering one of the official host logos said "Scotland" underneath it should be enough in the argument that the host country to be acknowledge is Scotland, not the United Kingdom.

Such a coincidence that this argument and the adding of the UK should begin on the day where people are again talking about Glasgow 2014 and Scotland's role in making those games a success. The majority of the funding to Glasgow 2014 came from both the Scottish Government and the CGF, not the British Government. Goodreg3 (talk) 12:07, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
