Untitled[edit]

Regarding the "No Catholics are allowed" statement which has been inserted. The organisation is a Protestant fraternity. If you are Muslim, Catholic, Hindu, Jewish or whatever you cannot join. The ABOD commemorates the siege of Derry where Protestants suffered the longest siege in the British Isles and ended up eating dogs, rats and horses and taking heavy casualties due to starvation. As such it is a commemorative organisation.

There have been no riots at the Apprentice Boys celebrations for a number of years since they came to an accomodation with the cities chamber of commerce, business owners and the residents of the predominantly Catholic "City side" or "West Bank" of L`derry. (BTW - The City Centre is on the city side and is used by all communities; the Waterside on the otherside of the river Foyle is majority Protestant.) The week long Maiden City Festival (which celebrates Ulster-Scots, Irish and minority cultures through the week, culminating in the Apprentice Boys march through the city and around the walls of the city) is promoted by the city and the Northern Ireland tourist board amongst others.

Ulster/Northern Ireland[edit]

Lapsed Pacifist seems to like to revert the location of Derry from Northern Ireland to Ulster. While Derry is indeed in Ulster, it is more specifically in Northern Ireland. --Mal 04:00, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Name[edit]

When they were formed in 1814 the city's name was not the big issue it later became. A lot of Irish placenames that are clearly the compound of two distinct names were frequently abbreviated to just one of the names without opening many eyes, and this city was often called both "Derry" and "Londonderry" regardless of one's background. Attitudes changed from the 1960s onwards when one side started demanding the removal of "London~" and the other reacted by insisting upon it and using "Londonderry" when previously they would have been perfectly content to just say "Derry". Is this really correct?[edit]
