In the copy-edit, caught one point that seems to contradict itself - it suggests that building a bastion around an existing medieval tower wasn't unusual, but then says that this is rare. I suspect it means that while it was common practice at the time, only a few examples still survive. I've modified the text accordingly, but if anyone knows better, please fix up this bit!
