Pipe band

[edit]

The sound of the pipes and drums caused the insurgents to surrender.

There was no actual surrender. The insurgents simply abandoned Crater, enabling the Argylls to occupy it. (See cites). Valetude (talk) 18:20, 11 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The inconsistency between 'The British decided to enter the Crater and retrieve the bodies of British soldiers.' and no casualties needs to be resolved. 83.100.188.53 (talk) 20:43, 27 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The reference to 'no casualties' seems to have been deleted since the last comment was logged. But there was no inconsistency. The three soldiers had been killed in a small reconnaissance operation, victims of a mutiny by the South Arabian Armed Police. The subsequent invasion of Crater by the whole battalion was achieved with nil casualties. Valetude (talk) 23:11, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

terminology and name

[edit]

The town is called either Crater or Aden. The district that the town lies in is also called Crater. Neither of them are "the Crater". The name derives from the fact that the town lies within the crater of an extinct volcano. However, all four of the references and both the external links use "Crater" with capital letter and without "the". Writing "the Crater district" or "the Crater area" are ok because the article binds to "district" or "area" in these cases. Zerotalk 11:49, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Second point, I suspect that "Battle of the Crater" is not correct. For reasons just mentioned, "the Crater" doesn't make sense. More to the wiki-point, I didn't see it in any of the references or external links. Where is the source? Zerotalk 09:04, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Good point. The contemporary reports always called it the Battle of Crater. Valetude (talk) 19:20, 25 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I will change the name. Zerotalk 05:37, 26 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
