Film?[edit]

This a song first and foremost. I wrote this stub because when I searched Black and Tan Fantasy, I got the film, not the duke ellington song. Why would a movie poster need to be added? Bts.smith (talk) 19:36, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As I wrote this, the page got turned back to a redirect. What?Bts.smith (talk) 19:40, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Talk:Black and Tan Fantasy redirected to Talk:Black and Tan (film). Black and Tan Fantasy redirected to Black and Tan (film), but like you said, you changed it into a song article. I changed the talk page redirect so it no longer redirects. Erik (talk | contribs) 19:54, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. Bts.smith (talk) 16:43, 7 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Concerns[edit]

I have concerns about this article in general. It reads like a review, is full of apparently original editorial content, not cited from another source, and has an undertone inappropriate for an encyclopedia entry: specifically, it seeks to incite the reader to anger over racist portrayals and practices in the time the film was made. This apparently original content seeks to overplay this film's messages in the context of the Harlem Renaissance. I think it needs major work which I am not qualified to undertake, but I am inclined to remove statements that are attributed to a source incorrectly (example: . justcary (talk) 19:19, 24 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the section "The Harlem renaissance and the Black and Tan fantasy" as both unreferenced and original research; part of it seems to be OR because the Huggins reference does not mention the film at all. We cannot make that kind of connection on Wikipedia. I would also say the "Director and cast" section could be shortened to a simpler "Cast" section since we do not need to recap each person's entire biographies here. We can then move forward with sources that actually cover this film. Let me know if you'd like help researching the topic. Erik (talk | contribs) 20:02, 24 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, Erik you were all over those changes before I'd finished editing my concerns. I don't know how married you are to the existing text. It's a mess of grammatical and usage problems, and the contributor's hidden agenda remains, but I'm loath to edit it because it may just have to be excised as OR (to use your abbreviation).justcary (talk) 23:02, 24 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Agreeing that the cast section need not offer detailed biographies, I have sourced and contributed an abbreviated biography of Fredi Washington. Others to follow. Feedback appreciated.justcary (talk) 00:00, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I do not think it is common to have paragraphs about each cast member that does not have to do directly with the film. We could make it a very simple cast list (maybe using the list here) and then work on the article from ground-up. It looks like there are good search results in Google Books commenting on this film directly, which is what this article needs. Erik (talk | contribs) 15:58, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Follow standard format/content[edit]

I agree with the concerns above. I have done some editing, but this is very confusing: there is still far too much bio content about the major characters, the directors, the Orchestra and the Cotton Club. What the article does not tell is what the cast character names were, how the Orchestra was identified, and whether the Cotton Club was identified or suggested by its reputation as a hot club in Harlem. Was the movie even set in Harlem? The assessment of all this needs to be a different section than Plot or Cast, and definitely opinions need to be anchored by citations to Reliable Sources. Will make another attempt.Parkwells (talk) 16:05, 4 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The title of the song may be "Black and Tan Fantasy," but the title of this film is Black and Tan, and nothing more[edit]

The film's title card reads:

RKO PRODUCTIONS, INC.
presents
“BLACK and TAN”
with
DUKE ELLINGTON
and his
COTTON CLUB ORCHESTRA
by arrangement with Irving Mills

RECORDED BY RCA PHOTOPHONE SYSTEM
Distributed by RKO DISTRIBUTING CORPORATION
Passed by the National Board of Review
COPYRIGHT MCMXXIX ~ ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

As such, I am removing "more fully called Black and Tan Fantasy" from the introduction.

public domain[edit]

This short film does not seem to have a copyright renewal. When I looked up the renewal in 1956-1958 I did not find it. At worst this is public domain on January 1, 2025 since that is when all published 1929 works become public domain. SDudley (talk) 18:01, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

and a source to use. SDudley (talk) 18:02, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
