Nomination for Deletion

[edit]

Somebody has nominated an article I wrote for deletion after it was on line less than three minutes. Why would anyone feel compelled to contribute to WIKIPEDIA when people are out to shoot you down before you even get started. Is there a way that people can consult each other before jumping to conclusions. Wikipedia will not get better unless they let people get involved. Please read the edited vesion. It is all based on factual documentation. By the way, I am living in Boryeong and feel that I am perfectly qualified to try to expand WIKIPEDIA knowledge about this little known area. I wish there had been an article such as this one prior to my arrival here. It would have helped. By the way, The Mud Festival is in South Korea, and anyone searching for the Mud Festival would already know that, in addition it gets linked directly through the page about Daecheon, which is found through a search for Boryeong. As far as I am concerned the information about this area has just expanded two hundred percent. Additionally, there was a phone number and a web address provided to verify the information through the Tourism office here, whom I do not belong to or have any association with whatsoever. I am doing this as a public service, having wished that someone had done it for me. Before deletion, I would strongly consider whether or not any ill intent has been expressed by the writer, and whethe or not there are othe sources of information on the subject. Sincerely yours, —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jeffrey Dillon (talkcontribs) 20:26, 1 January 2008

Advertisements masquerading as articles

Articles considered advertisements include those that are solicitations for a business, product or service, or are public relations pieces designed to promote a company or individual. Wikispam articles are usually noted for sales-oriented language and external links to a commercial website. However, a differentiation should be made between spam articles and legitimate articles about commercial entities.

Blatant examples of advertising masquerading as articles can be speedily deleted by tagging the articles with {{db-spam}}. Other advertisements posted on Wikipedia can be dealt with by either proposed deletion or listing them on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. On some occasions, the content can be removed temporarily on the basis of a suspected copyright violation, since the text is often copied from another website and posted anonymously.

When an article on an otherwise encyclopedic topic has the tone of an advertisement, the article can often be salvaged by rewriting it in a neutral point of view. Elements of articles about products or services with brand names can also be combined under a common topic or category to facilitate unbiased and collaborative information by including information about the competition and about different alternatives.

I am completely a novice here, and don't have a great deal of time for intellectual games. I can take time to learn and to read if I have anyone willing to assist. I do not have the most reliable internet connection here in South Korea either. I suggest that before deletion, others attempt to contact me directly and offer to help clean it up. The person who nominated it did so as a gut or reactionary response, rather than take any amount of time to think about it. That being said, I would welcome any assistance from RedFarmer provided he really wants to see Wikipedia serve people in the world. As I said in my other talk page, we need this kind of information. I just watched the founder, or so he says, on CNN and he stated there is so little in certain languages. This will continue until people proficient in those certain languages get involved. By having these references on the English site, hopefully it will encourage someone in South Korea to want to get involved and encourage others to make those corrections as needed. While it may not be a perfect text, it seeks to resolve an absence of information and fill in a gap. I cannot tell you much about Korea, but I can begin to provide information on this small region which I am living in right now. When I searched for Lee Myun Baek, I found his life history as a cartoon through his website which specifically was paid for as part of a campaign to elect him as the new President of this country. It was informative to me and I was happy to read it and learn, but it was self-serving in every way, since it was posted all prior to the December 19th election here. And it specifically illuminated his desires to achieve this political office, and it specifically outlined his 747 plan for South Korea. So what is the harm in a little tribute to the Festival of Mud, which seeks to clarify the fact that Daecheon Dae cheon and Boryeong are one and the same place, and also seeks to provide some minimal information on a normal everyday Korean spa, which by my experience is absolutely and unequivocally different than any American or European spa that I have ever been to, in that it is not just about the hot water, or the physical cleansing, but the overall cleansing of body, mind, and spirit, thus my references to salt, mineral stones, charcoal and mud.

Last, The Boryeong Mud Skin Care Center is the true and correct name of the place, so there are no grammar questions there, that is as it should be, and I am not able in any way to gain from anyone visiting this place. This place is as popular to Daecheon as Disneyland is to Orlando. It is a part of the cultural landscape and cannot be overlooked. There are other spas and I mentioned one. I provided the phone number for the Tourism division in Boryeong City and their web address, not the phone number for the spa and not the address web, or physical for the spa. If you would like to speak to someone who has some ability to speak English, I will now provide this number, 011-438-4865. Perhaps a few people may take an interest in this area for various reasons, among them they may want to come here to teach, or they may be coming here as a visitor/tourist, and they may try to gain some information prior to their arrival. I feel that the more others contribute, the more likely it is that some folks here in Korea will pick up the ball, to use a standard metaphor, and run with it. Hangul is cherished here, and I am sure that people would like to have their own Wikipedia, but it has to begin somewhere. I'd like to quote Margaret Meade, "Never underestimate the power of a few people to change the world." A quick internet search could find that this is a mis-quote. To change the world, we have to communicate. Please don't push me off the bridge without saying Hello first. The only reference I can cite here is my personal and actual experience, and a tourist map printed in English. When Lee Myun Baek said he will make the twelfth largest economy in the world into the seventh largest economy in the world, he cited no references on how this could be factual; it was a proposal to help get him elected and to show by way of nuance that he is aware of the importance of the English speaking world to the global situation in South Korea. I think that it is important that rather than people just coming here to get drunk, they could use some of this free time to help get the information on South Korea out to the English speaking world.

The results of your actions are rarely seen but in retrospect. I won't write much more about South Korea, as there is little that I can write about outside of opinion, but I do hope that maybe some other English speakers may see what I have written about this little area by the sea, and do a similar text regarding an area that they live in, and the picture of South Korea will grow in our minds, finally being revealed to those who will see a need to create a Wikipedia in Hangul, or has it been done already. I also hope that as the picture of South Korea grows in our collective minds, we will remember that there is a North Korea and a China and a Russia and an Iran and a land called Iraq and another called Afghanistan and next to that place another which is called Pakistan, and that we will realize that we are all linked together to live or die as a human race, and that we must build our relations up rather than tear them down. I know this all too well as I walk the streets and am treated only as a foreigner and with suspicion as I am from the west, and the west we all know is self-serving, and gains primarily by conquest. How to change world opinion and make friends is beyond me. I am but a humble grower from a small forgotten Spanish and Indian village near Mexico, but still on this side, the north side of the border. I wish I was so smart, I certainly would have changed the world by now. Unfortunately I am a lowly American from the great state of New Mexico, lost in a foreign land with no ability to speak the native language, and far from my real home, where I am a farmer, growing corn to eat and for pleasure, and for the hope of the future, non-g.m.o. varieties, native corn, blue and red corn, and I am intrigued by the nature of food and how it grows, as I see a food shortage on the horizon, and that is one of the reasons I mentioned the old people selling the fish, because it's all connected. When the earth is ravaged, as the oil has been spilled in the oceans, killing the precious foods that the waters had given us to eat, and the corn has been genetically modified and cannot reproduce itself as nature had intended, (citation, Charles Darwin, Origin of the Species)and the water is running high or running low, but either way there is little to drink, all the intellect in the world will not save us from the peril of starvation, but a cooperative approach to each other and to the land may give us hope to hold on to. I'm not clear about what you mean notability TIME Magazine -- Asia Edition -- June 26, 2006 Vol. 167, No. 25 TIME Magazine Table of Contents -- Asia Edition -- June 26, 2006 Vol. 167, No. 25. ... Get your hands dirty at South Korea's Boryeong Mud Festival ... www.time.com/time/magazine/asia/0,9263,501060626,00.html - 51k -, The address and phone number is not for the place. The Mud Festival is notable and so is The Boryeong Mud Skin Care Center which is on the map produced by the provincial government for tourist here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jeffrey Dillon (talkcontribs) 22:00, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As I said before, no one thinks you were trying to do anything deliberately harmful, and the nomination for deletion does not mean that the article will be deleted. Wikipedia does have certain standards, both quality and style, however, and those standards must be adheared to. As I said, I'm willing to help you in any way I can; however, I do suggest you read some of the links I left on your talk page in order to understand those standards.
As for the Time article, that is exactly what people need to see in order to understand the festival is notable. As I said, you are encouraged to contribute to the discussion. -- Redfarmer (talk) 22:16, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

From what I have seen so far, you guys suck under the guise of politically correct do gooders. You did what you wanted. As a matter of truth and fact, I stated twice that the phone number was not for the business, and you deleted it in thinking that it was. No further comments. Your politically correct notion of truthspeak sucks. Quoting from newspapers and magazines doesn't make a writer. I provided some fgood information and you watered it down to a dumptruck full of dirt to enrich a local economy. This sucks. What place in the world under a free market economy doesn't appreciate some business. Why don't you just say Disneyland is a gimick to boost the low life town of Orlando by having someone dress up in a rats costume? Take a look at this article: "Illuminati is a name that refers to several groups, both real and fictitious. Historically, it refers specifically to the Bavarian Illuminati, an Enlightenment era secret society founded in the late eighteenth century. However, in modern times it refers to a purported conspiratorial organization which acts as a shadowy power behind the throne, allegedly controlling world affairs through present day governments and corporations, usually as a modern incarnation or continuation of the Bavarian Illuminati. In this context, Illuminati is often used in reference to a New World Order (NWO)." Where are the citations? Jeffrey Dillon (talk) 21:09, 2 January 2008 (UTC)Jeffrey Dillon[reply]
