Brookline High-Newton North Football Rivalry

[edit]

This is in response to Dmirkin's editing... I'm not sure if Newton North ever hosted Brookline High for a Thankgiving Game. If they did, it must have been decades ago. It seems every year they play on BHS' home turf (Parsons Field). When I attended BHS in the mid to late 1980s, all the Thanksgiving games took place at Parsons unless my memory is playing tricks on me.

Also I am planning to include what year the rivalry started. NFL.com and Boston.com states that it all began in either 1899 or 1894. I would tend to believe the Boston.com version since it does states the present win-loss-tie record of 53-52-6 (in favor of Newton North) and the math concludes its 1894.

Here are the sources: http://www.boston.com/sports/schools/football/articles/2005/11/25/newton_north_finishes_strong_routs_brookline/

I agree with the 1894 date. Any clue when the school itself was established? You might be right about the game always being at Parsons.

I think the Images of America book "Brookline" by Greer Hardwicke and Roger Reed, published in 1998, may have the information on when BHS was established. Keep in mind though that the school was not established at Greenough Street. I recall browsing through the Hardwicke/Reed book (and other sources) that the site of what is now the Pierce elementary school is where the original BHS site was before moving to the Greenough Street location about the late 1890s.

The Hardwicke/Reed book states on page 62 that BHS was established in 1843. The original school was located at the corners of Harvard Street and School Street (thats where the Pierce elementary school now stands). The high school relocated to Greenough Street in 1893, stated on page 68.

Athletics

[edit]

As most of you know, this section has been a fairly popular hotspot for current BHS students and (immature) alums trying to put their team and their names here to get some attention from peers.

The original editor (not AlanSohn) who added in the track team article was likely put in by a person on that team. I removed it a few times only AlanSohn (who doesn't understand the recent history of this page) keeps putting it back. If it stays, all it does is bring a past problem back in the forefront and we'll be removing a lot of athlete names (or those who claim to be BHS athletes) and teams that really hasn't done anything that a mainstream Wiki reader would know.

I'm putting this to a Yes or No vote in which you can reply here, which expires on Sunday, February 24, 2008, on whether or not this track team "accomplishment" should stay. As I see it, its no different than the past stuff that was attempted to put in, but removed by others.

My vote is No. 16:06, 17 February 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.154.111.14 (talkcontribs)

I am not keen on non-notable athletes being included but in this case no individual has been named so it seems fine. TerriersFan (talk) 02:34, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong Yes As in all articles, the gold standard for inclusion in an article is the inclusion of reliable and verifiable sources. Winning the regional championship of a major national competition, accompanied by a clearly reliable and verifiable source, is clearly notable, no doubt about it. School articles are a constant target of vandalism, and I have deleted vandalism from this article multiple times. The supposed fear that inclusion of a major national event will somehow be a gateway for problems is completely and utterly illogical. Who it was who added the material is irrelevant; it is notable, it has sources, it stays. Alansohn (talk) 19:30, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

construction

[edit]

Now that the building is going under construction, that architecture section should maybe mention who is working on the school and the reasons for expansion. --Becky10 (talk) 17:30, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
