Sound file[edit]

Someone might make a recording of the fountain and embed the sound file in the article. I haven't ever created a sound file, but here's an example of what's possible:

I copied this from Für Elise. Finetooth (talk) 18:17, 3 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Or a blackbird recorded outside, probably: Blackbird song recorded at Lille, France. Not sure how these are done or what equipment might be best. Finetooth (talk) 18:24, 3 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
A great idea! Unfortunately, I am not very familiar with recording sound files or which file formats are allowed at Wikipedia. ---Another Believer (Talk) 19:12, 3 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The water is turned off for winter now, I imagine, so this would have to wait until spring. Lots of time to figure out the mechanics. Finetooth (talk) 19:21, 3 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Comments

  • No DAB links, no dead links
  • Based on a Renaissance fountain, it was originally painted white and included a statuette of a boy, possibly depicting Cupid. However, the figure was damaged and permanently removed from the sculpture before or during the 1940s. can you combine these sentences? Do you know the specific fountain, or was it based on Renaissance fountains generally?
    •  Done I gather the latter. No source mentioned a specific fountain. ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:00, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • The fountain was restored in 1960, but no longer functioned. Its condition was deemed "treatment urgent" by the Smithsonian Institution's "Save Outdoor Sculpture!" program in February 1994. can you transition these sentences better?
    • Can you be more specific? No sources speak to its condition between 1960 and 1994. I'd have to dig deeper to find where the discussion took place (I think the talk page of WikiProject Oregon), but this was the best wording me and other article editors could come up with. ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:20, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • after Francis J. Murnane, a local longshoreman can you link "longshoreman"?
  • and "children dance beneath the drops or explore the playground immediately to the east." this seems like fluff
  • This still seems like fluff, what does "children dance beneath the drops" add to the article? Seattle (talk) 21:32, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Well, it was meant in part in state that the fountain is once again running. Would it be better to remove the quote and just state as such? ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:13, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • "children dance beneath the drops" doesn't seem neutral. I would prefer an exchange for something like "and water flows through the structure". Seattle (talk) 00:45, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't know what to replace the text with, so maybe I can just remove it and use the source to verify that the fountain has since been restored? ---Another Believer (Talk) 07:16, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm not sure why you need to cite two books that are essentially the same in reference seven
    • I think both are worth including, but I wanted to reduce the number of inline citations. This was the solution offered to me in previous GA reviews. ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:04, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Why do you think that both are worth including if they're essentially the same book? Seattle (talk) 21:32, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Because someone might find either one helpful? Because they were published 5 years apart and by different publishers? I don't see the harm in keeping both, but I don't feel strongly enough to refuse removing one of them if that is required to pass the GA review. If you want one removed, do you have a preference? ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:27, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • OK, that makes sense; it seemed unnecessary to me, but I'm not heart set on removal. Seattle (talk) 00:45, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • How did the City of Portland's Metropolitan Arts Commission come to own the fountain? Can you mention its ownership in the text?
    • No source mentioned ownership transfers. Only the Smithsonian source mentioned an administering organization. I added "According to Smithsonian, the fountain is administered by the City of Portland's Metropolitan Arts Commission" to the prose. ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:15, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Duplication detector checks:
  • Our article: commissioned by the City of Portland in 1891 for $400; source: commissioned by the city of portland in 1891 for $400
  • I removed "of Portland", but is "in 1891 for $400" really problematic? Or do you have a better suggestion? ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:17, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Article:John "Hans" Staehli, a Swiss woodcarver who immigrated to Portland ...; Source: John "Hans" Staehli was a Swiss woodcarver who immigrated to Portland ...
  • I changed "a Swiss woodcarver" to "a woodcarver from Switzerland". Is there a synonym for immigrated that would help? ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:23, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Otherwise, I'm confident this meets the good article criteria. Seattle (talk) 03:18, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for taking time to review this article. I've made some changes per your above concerns and am happy to continue working on the article if you have additional feedback or your concerns have been addressed fully. ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:24, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I will consider adding a locator map once coordinates are added to the article. We also hope to record the chiming sound made by the fountain. ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:25, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The sound recording certainly would be a nice addition. I don't know where you'd fit a locator map, but the coordinates would be a nice addition as well. If you can find it on Google Maps, the URL contains the coordinates. Seattle (talk) 21:32, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I think it is at 45.521333,-122.702667, but I am not understanding how to add this information to the "coord" template properly. If you are not familiar, I can either ask someone at WikiProject Oregon or leave the "coords missing" tag until someone comes along to help on their own time. ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:18, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I agree a locator map may not be possible, but I might try once the coordinates work properly. I am surprised the infobox does not include the map parameter. ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:31, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Google Maps uses decimal degrees, and our templates use degrees, minutes, and seconds. I used slightly different coordinates for the conversion, from here. Do you think our coordinate system looks approximately correct? Seattle (talk) 00:45, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
They should be all set now. What you can do to add coordinates the right way is copy the formatting from other articles or look at the directions and examples at {{coord}}. Jsayre64 (talk) 05:51, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Jsayre. I tried adding the coordinates myself but could not figure out the decimal/degree system. ---Another Believer (Talk) 07:07, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Passing; thanks again. Seattle (talk) 17:16, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your time and assistance. ---Another Believer (Talk) 19:18, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
