Untitled[edit]

I wanted to write this article because the current Wikipedia article on Climate change is devoid entirely of the concept ofpoverty. I have found significant literature that connects climate change and the potential impact of humans, and furthermore, how poverty will be affected. This page attempts to introduce the linkage between these two concepts. Furthermore, the entry will work around the frameworks already built on Wikipedia from the effects of Climate change and agriculture to the potential solutions which include Climate change mitigation and climate change adaptation. While I understand the controversy surrounding climate change and its potential effects on the environment, I strive earnestly to stay as neutral and as unbiased as possible. I also welcome any well-founded corrections or additions that would contribute to the quality of this Wiki entry as a whole. Slin2264 (talk) 20:06, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Climate change and gender[edit]

Hello! I am planning to create an article on Climate change and gender for my class at Rice University, SWGS 322, and I felt that the subject matter had significant ties to the content on this page. I hope that the editors for this page can help me improve my ideas for the Climate change and gender article. There is no current Wikipedia article on this topic, nor is there a section covering it on the Climate change or Gender pages. In the past, there existed a page called The Effects of Climate Change on Impoverished Women and Children, but it was deleted for original research. I do not think I will have this problem because a) I have found many reputable sources for this topic and b) I have a few years of experience editing Wikipedia articles so I (hope that I) remain neutral and avoid drawing my own conclusions from other people's research when writing content for Wikipedia. My new article would include a brief definition of climate change, an explanation of the way it affects genders differently (even among low-income and impoverished populations) and why that is the case (social norms like division of labor, biological factors, environment/geography, etc.). It would summarize the research on the subject and talk about the two main types of policy addressing climate change (mitigative and adaptive) while focusing on case studies (in Bangladesh and India). Please let me know if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions about my proposed article. You can respond here or on my talk page. Thanks! Editing Article[edit]

Hello! I will be editing this article for SWGS 322 at Rice University, as a student in term = Spring 2014. I will further expand upon the topics mentioned, and incorporate alternative ways to decrease climate change. I intend to explore how we might develop solutions to poverty though utilization of clean energy and environmental systems, rather than describing perceived problems and losses of development due to climate change, as the current article seems to do a bit. This investigation topic is essential to consider in our ever-progressing world of innovation and technology. Hopefully, findings will allow us to gain knowledge and encourage us to tackle the social challenges that face us as a result of climate in an objective manner. My hope is that I will be able to specify the material already provided, while integrating insight about alternative ways to limit climate change and how this might influence social development. The current article obtains many links to other articles, but is not particularly detailed. Most of the statements are rather broad and biased, rather than objective and specific (to a particular region geographically, or aspect of climate change).

I thought of editing the title of the article so that it does not contain the word “and,” suggesting a biased, correlative relationship between climate change and poverty. Do you have any suggestions of a better title? One idea that I had was “Clean Energy Development Potential.” I also hope to incorporate pieces of Climate change and gender, as mentioned above, for I think that the consideration of gender in relation to social development could integrate an additional layer of understanding climate change. Do you have any suggestions or input of what else is necessary for the cohesion and enjoyment of this article? Thank you for your consideration! Peer Review[edit]

Sarah.heberlig[edit]

Overall, I think you did a great job adding new material to the “Climate Change and Poverty” article! I think it was very informative!

I might suggest working on three main things: cleaning up the existing article, adding more sources, connecting your article to pre-existing relevant articles, and providing pictures.

The previous article that you were contributing to created a multitude of sections that were either incomplete or left blank. I would suggest if you have time filling these sections in, or deleting them so that your article does not look incomplete.

Secondly, I think you need more sources! Right now, I would work on cleaning up some of your in-text citations, as well as adding about 4-7 sources per every lengthy paragraph. Additionally, I would make sure to cite the lead paragraph, as the information in that might seem opinionated/subjective.

Thirdly, I think that your article definitely has relevance to and can be linked to other page articles. For example, right now there are not too many links. For a start, I would suggest adding links to the pages “Carbon Footprint,” “Green Infrastructure,” and “Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.”

Finally, do not forgot add illustrations! I think that this will really finalize the article!

Peer Review[edit]

Hi Caroline! Great job so far! As far as reviewing, I think more could be added to the poverty section and the human rights section. It’d be good to get the numbers into footnotes, and then maybe more consistency with using numbers or footnotes as opposed to parentheses and the name of the source, like (IPCC 2013). Also more facts could be sourced to give them more legitimacy when they sound like they’re trying to make a point, like the first paragraphs. Also, the first paragraphs sound sort of un-neutral, but it’s sort of tough to make those points sound completely objective anyway, so maybe adding more support form sourcing would be helpful. However, the whole issue itself is not completely neutral so it’s tough in that sense too. Try to add illustrations if you find good ones. All in all, great job! Climate Change and Poverty: Human Health[edit]

Hello! I will be editing this article for my bioarchaeology of climate change class at Beloit College. I plan to expand the human health section to include more information on temperature related deaths/diseases and the psychological effects of climate change. I will make a point to specify how vulnerable populations, such as those living in poverty, are more susceptible to the health effects of climate change (backed by legitimate sources). The details of how climate change is and can affect human health is an ongoing issue and further investigation is necessary as the world continues to react to the effects of climate change. Please let me know if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions about editing this section. You can respond here or on my talk page. Thanks! Greifaq (talk) 21:25, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Human Health Edits[edit]

Hello! I have inserted my edits for the Human Health section. I have expanded the information to include more details on overall human health impacts of climate change, specifically for vulnerable populations. I have also added sections for temperature related diseases/deaths and psychological impacts. The details of how climate change is and can affect human health is an ongoing issue and further investigation is necessary as the world continues to react to the effects of climate change. Please let me know if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions about editing this section. You can respond here or on my talk page. Thanks! Greifaq (talk) 16:45, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

"Animal agriculture" omission[edit]

In today's civilization, the demand is on energy and technology more than farm animals that are used for agriculture. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Creative Impressionism (talkcontribs) 02:14, 9 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Factors of poverty[edit]

I have included some factors to the Poverty section that can be linked to the poverty including historical, societal, economic, political, orthodoxy, geographical, wars, and colonialism factors. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Creative Impressionism (talkcontribs) 05:05, 27 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Poverty indicators[edit]

I have elaborated on the Overview section some other ways to measure poverty, including the voice, the power, the human rights, and physiological well-being, in addition to economic and monetary indicators. Creative Impressionism (talk) 06:06, 27 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Mitigation efforts[edit]

I have mentioned two mitigation efforts in the Proposed Policy Challenges section, which are decentralizing decision-making and energy saving; those could improve services in rural areas. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Creative Impressionism (talkcontribs) 05:53, 27 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This essay[edit]

I thought this looked like a term paper--turns out it's at least three successive term papers. Brennan Stock, your edit led me here--thanks. Yes, this needs a rewrite, from the top all the way down. Drmies (talk) 02:58, 9 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I've reverted to an earlier version (15 August 2013) prior to the student essays due to serious reference problems. Vsmith (talk) 22:35, 25 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Edits and Suggestions[edit]

I wanted to edit a couple different aspects on the structure/content of this article. This article does not mention race and the role that it can play in poverty/climate change impacts. Additionally, information can be added about the impact of natural disasters (linked to climate change) on low income communities. Lastly, the article could be expanded in regards to policy interventions and mitigation strategies that can be put in place to offset the impact of climate change on the poor. 99.203.26.80 (talk) 03:16, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! We encourage you to try to make some of those edits, or if you don't feel confident doing that yet, trying to make similar contributions via the suggestions at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Climate_change/Small_to_medium_tasks. Sadads (talk) 18:54, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Intended Changes to Article[edit]

Hello, I will be editing four sections of this Wiki page for my Migrations in World History course at Chapman University. For my edits, I will be using Robert A. McLeman’s book Climate and Human Migration: Past Experiences, Future Challenges. McLeman is a former Canadian diplomat who has worked with many country’s governments on issues of Climate Change, Migration, and Security. He is currently a professor of Geography and Environmental Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University. I plan on editing four sections of this article, specifically: Reversing Development, Infrastructural Impacts, Security Impacts, and Proposed Policy Solutions. In Reversing Development, I would like to add information to Rising Sea Levels and Exposure to Natural Disasters. McLeman points out that the removal of natural buffers, such as mangroves and wetlands, along with climate change and an increasing population puts more people at risk of environmental migration. This removal of buffers particularly affects impoverished people due to insecure housing and less access to resources following natural disasters. In the Infrastructural impacts section, I will include problems posed by insecure house locations, inadequate safety regulations, and outdated facilities, such as a lack of air conditioning in areas that are seeing an increase in extreme heat events. Many of these problems affect people in poverty more severely than those of higher socioeconomic standing and act as push factors for those populations. Lastly, in the Proposed Policy Solution section, I will include the importance of improving advanced warning systems and global response networks. McLeman shows how the aftermath of two similar Tropical Cyclones, one in the US and the other in Bangladesh, can illustrate the importance of advanced warning and save lives. He also adds that improved response networks between governments, institutions, and individuals can reduce the lasting impacts of extreme weather events and decrease the likelihood of impoverished populations leaving. If anyone has advice or issues with these changes, please let me know. JoelRode (talk) 19:45, 1 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Something's missing in the wordings[edit]

"With a population ranging between 198 to 210 million people in Nigeria, existing sanitation and water infrastructural facilities remain inadequate with 2.2billion people lacking access to safe water and 4.2 billion lacking safe sanitations both in the rural and urban areas." I couldn't understand them, and I could not find related info from the cited references, either. Can anybody help? Thanks. ThomasYehYeh (talk) 12:27, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Education Foundation Assignment[edit]

While this article does go over a great deal of climate change statistics and information, it is lacking on the context of poverty and how climate change can affect poverty. Lsramos (talk) 12:54, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Evaluation[edit]

Is the article's content relevant to the topic? Yes, The article provides a detailed overview of the interconnections between climate change and poverty, highlighting how climate change disproportionately affects low-income communities and developing countries. It discusses the various impacts of climate change on health, economy and human rights, particularly emphasizing the greater vulnerability of low-income individuals and communities.
