Isn't it relevant that Petraeus was in the safety of West Point preparing to be an officer while draftees fought the biggest war of his lifetime? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.49.27.38 (talk) 19:08, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Lack of details related to classified information leak[edit]

Reading the section related to Petraeus' plea agreement, there is nothing related to what Petraeus actually did---just an ambiguous statement that he plead guilty to a misdemeanor and was fined. The seriousness of the charges---the facts that he released top secret information, improperly stored it at his home, and later lied about it to investigators, is not revealed. I added a sentence that summarized the main charges from the 15 page statement of facts that were part of Petraeus' plea agreement.69.250.107.160 (talk) 02:41, 29 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

“Petraeus admitted that he improperly removed and retained highly sensitive information in eight personal notebooks that he gave to Broadwell. The Justice Department said the information, if disclosed, could have caused “exceptionally grave damage.” Officials said the notebooks contained code words for secret intelligence programs, the identities of covert officers, and information about war strategy and deliberative discussions with the National Security Council. The plea agreement left some in the Justice Department angry, particularly at the FBI, and some agents have argued privately that it will hamper future efforts to secure prison terms in leak cases.“ “How David Petraeus avoided felony charges and possible prison time,” Adam Goldman, The Washington Post, January 25, 2016. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1702:26A0:4F10:B997:3B18:6E34:C99B (talk) 19:14, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

External links section redux[edit]

I just added an "External links" template for the External links section, for the first reason Revolutionaryluddite brought up in Talk:David Petraeus/Archive 1#External Links on 15 October 2007. The majority of the content, especially in the "News and magazine articles" "non-section", should be turned into references. —DocWatson42 (talk) 08:37, 20 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

AO MSC?[edit]

On 2021-08-27T11:30:58, User:2600:8806:6:7100:4e9:84d3:3ee9:f7b7 added to the Infobox, "note that the Constitution of the United States does not recognize foreign honorifics such as post-nominal letters" after "AO MSC".

In fact, the Foreign Emoluments Clause of the US Constitution says, "No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State."

The article says he is an "Honorary Officer of the Order of Australia, Military Division", which for Australians is signified by the letters "AO". It also says he has received the "Meritorious Service Cross, Military Division (Canada)", which for Canadians is signified by the letters MSC.

Has the US Congress given their consent for Patraeus to "accept" these honors? Without that consent, it's not even legal for Patraeus to "accept" those honors. There probably is some military regulation that specifies under what circumstances someone in the US military is allowed to wear a decoration like that awarded by a foreign power. However, that's different, I think, from authorizing the use of letters like that after the person's name.

I also think this is different from, e.g, MD, PhD, etc., which are professional designations, not "titles" granted by the US or "any King, Prince, or foreign State." This may be a silly point, but I'm removing those letters at the start of this article. If you can find where Congress gave their consent, they can be restored. Thanks, DavidMCEddy (talk) 13:56, 27 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@DavidMCEddy: There are regulations and procedures regarding: processing, requesting, and wearing foreign decorations and badges. The current standards are outlined on the U.S. Army's Human Resources Command website. Having said that, the regulations and procedures have changed since Petraeus has been discharged from the Army since 2011. Whether or not these awards are eligible for wear is unknown.
You can formally seek a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request through the National Personnel Records Center if you are so inclined in order to verify the eligibility of awards and decorations. Unless proven otherwise, I would not recommend removing this information unless verified. -Signaleer (talk) 15:51, 27 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Signaleer: Thanks for the references. I did NOT remove the documentation that he "received" the awards, but I DID remove the letters after his name. If you don't like that, let's discuss further.
If you want to pursue this further, I would support that. However, I'm not eager to spend more time on this. Thanks again for your contributions to Wikipedia. DavidMCEddy (talk) 16:03, 27 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@DavidMCEddy: I have no problem with those changes, I support your changes and understand your logic. Happy editing. -Signaleer (talk) 16:34, 27 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Undisclosed paid edits and conflict of interest[edit]

I have added an {{undisclosed paid}} tag to this article because of extensive editing by a UPE sockfarm, please see Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/TardyMarmot for evidence. Users relevant to this page include: TardyMarmot (talk · contribs), DataSloth (talk · contribs), Littlebitofinfo (talk · contribs), Fedora15 (talk · contribs), Kawaiighibli (talk · contribs), Nadin155 (talk · contribs) The article will need a thorough review ensuring notability, due weight, neutral language, and use of reliable sources before the tag is removed. Combined with conflict of interest edits by Sboylan (talk · contribs), a significant part of current content is written by UPE and COI editors. MarioGom (talk) 09:21, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have restored this tag, which was removed without explanation earlier this year: Special:Diff/1145756746. MarioGom (talk) 08:02, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Early life section is out of place[edit]

The “Early life” section should be immediately after the Intro. Not having it so is confusing— because 99% of Wikipedia biography articles follow this format.

Considering reader experience is important, as is paying attention to Wikipedia convention.

Incorrect statement about quote on retaking Crimea[edit]

In section "Views on the Russian invasion of Ukraine", the sentence below is presumably incorrect. Ukraine has not retaken Crimea, nor did Petraeus say anything to that effect in the cited interview.

Sentence in question:

In another interview, he said that Western support had improved counteroffensive strategies, resulting in retaking Crimea and Donbas territories from Russia. 2A00:23C7:532F:4301:414F:3917:540B:7E3D (talk) 20:13, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
