Dumarsais Simeus[edit]

Candidate for president in upcoming hatian election

Yep. This is about Dumarsais Simeus, who was born in Haiti, but emigrated to the USA and became a naturalized citizen 44 years ago. He has returned to Haiti to run for the presidency. Arguments are ongoing whether he's eligible. He says he still has Haitian citizenship despite taking the US Oath of Allegiance. The Haitian Electoral Board disagreed. Cue much wrangling about the wording and implications of the Oath. I'm not sure where the situation stands at the moment. Tearlach 19:04, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe some of this can be salvaged. It seems to talk about nationality issues. Kgrr

Naturalization Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America Oath: "I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the armed forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God."< http://uscis.gov/graphics/aboutus/history/teacher/oath.htm> In some cases, INS allows the oath to be taken without the clauses: "… That I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by law; that I will perform non-combatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by law…"

The general requirements for administrative naturalization include: · A period of continuous residence and physical presence in the United States; · Residence in a particular USCIS District prior to filing; · An ability to read, write, and speak English; · A knowledge and understanding of U.S. history and government; · Good moral character; · Attachment to the principles of the U.S. Constitution; and, · Favorable disposition toward the United States. http://uscis.gov/graphics/services/natz/index.htm

What is Selective Service registration? Registration is a way our government keeps a list of names of men from which to draw in case of a national emergency requiring rapid expansion of our Armed Forces. By registering all young men, the Selective Service ensures that a future draft will be fair and equitable. <http://www.sss.gov/qa.htm#quest1> -===-

I have boiled all of this down into the section concerning his citizenship under his bid for election. Hopefully, I did not miss something important. Kgrr 16:16, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Clean Up[edit]

The article has been marked with a clean-up notice. Here is a list of what needs to be done: 1) Article needs his picture 2) Simeus's birth date 3) graduation date from Howard University 4) Also, it needs a section on his views on the issues. His platform appears to be like all the rest - solve the poverty problem.

I would add that the formatting still needs to be wikified further. It would be interesting to know more about how likely it is thought to be that he'll actually be elected and why these "angry men and women" were so angry as to throw rocks at him.--Carabinieri 16:33, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The NY Times piece says there were in a district of supporters of ex-president Aristide (who claims he was ejected from power by the USA). Tearlach 18:27, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. What seems to be going on is that the Bush administration threw out the democratically elected Populist Jean-Bertrand Aristide and in turn are trying to install their own "democratically elected" dictatorial government more suited to their business needs. And the country is heavily divided between a small pro-business elite minority and a large majority of poor, illiterate people that is not likely to vote. There appears to be a very large Aristide silent majority in Haiti.
The backlash against Simeus may be because of a general hate towards the US due to the coup in 2004, his US citizenship (had he only become resident this would have been easier to overcome), and specifically evidence that Simeus may be closely tied with the Bush clan. His membership in the Haitian advisory group and his recent Condolezza Rice contingent may be evidence of this. Additonally, none of his personal money is going into this campaign. He is being funded by several multi-nationals. Of course these folks want their quid-pro quo when he's in office. However, I am still afraid this is my POV instead of fact. I believe I can back this thesis with several references. Kgrr 12:13, 2 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
