Initial conversation on the title and content of this article
[edit]There should be an article on this - not sure what its best title is or what its contents are yet.
This disaster will clearly have global scale effects on "how things work". Examples include:
- Effects on the oil industry
- Effects on the energy industry generally (reallocation of energy sources worldwide etc)
- Effects on the insurance market
- Effects on national economies (US, UK)
- Effect on the global economy
FT2 (Talk | email) 22:55, 17 June 2010 (UTC)
- Something a lot shorter: e.g. Economic effects of the Deepwater Horizon disaster.
- —WWoods (talk) 02:12, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
- Economic effects of Deepwater Horizon oil spill works for me. "Disaster" is ambiguous: the explosion or the spill? The rig explosion itself is relatively inconsequential to all but BP, Transocean, their insurers, stockholders, and regulators; the effects of the oil spill proper are of wide-ranging economic impact Paulscrawl (talk) 19:18, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
- "Economic" could be smaller scale, I'm wondering what to call the article that is focused on the global/national scale. Structural consequences of the Deepwater Horizon disaster? FT2 (Talk | email) 07:17, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
Seems rather premature: socio-political structures are remarkably resilient to systemic change. Give it a few years to play out in legislation. WP:NOTCRYSTAL Paulscrawl (talk) 19:18, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
- It's true we don't know the long term effects. But 1/ there will be long term effects and these will be seen as "worthy of notice" seems almost unquestionable (even if we don't yet know the details), 2/ there are events ongoing even this soon which allow an article to develop related to long term large scale impact, and 3/ there is current discussion of long term effects - all these are verifiable. But point agreed, this could be a "current event" article for a long time as its scope is one measured by years. Then again the entire Deepwater Horizon topic area is in that boat (no pun intended). Second Paragraph of the UK Economy section
[edit]Seems like not only original research and conjecture, but completely unrelated to the section. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.10.49.124 (talk) 19:11, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
Takeover speculations
[edit]There was a following paragraph added by an editor:
There were speculations in the press, guided by the commentary of Fred Lucas, Energy Analyst at J.P. Morgan Cazenove, that there would be a takeover of the company, focusing on possible bids from Exxon or Shell at a presumed price of £88 billion.[1] In addition, BP executives held talks with a number of sovereign wealth funds including funds from Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Qatar and Singapore, for creation of a strategic partnership to avoid takeover by other major oil companies.[2]
I removed this as no takeover happened or even takeover bid was made. Speculations that time ExxonMobil or Royal Dutch Shell may make a bid were not confirmed as these companies did not make any bid for BP. As for talks with sovereign wealth fund, probably executives of most of publicly listed multinationals have that kind of talks all the time. Probably there was more that kind of contacts that time but it would be worth to be included if that kind of strategic partnership was formed or any of these funds became a major shareholder in the company. However, that did not happened. Beagel (talk) 20:44, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
