Slide rule precursor?

[edit]

Is the Gunter scale any relation to a slide rule? -- Cimon Avaro; on a pogostick. 16:12, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Seems so - www.hpmuseum.org/sliderul.htm and www.powerhousemuseum.com/collection/database/?irn=53093 GraL (talk) 19:58, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it's a non-sliding logarithmic rule for computation, the immediate predecessor of, and for a long time competitor to, the slide rule. Dicklyon (talk) 20:06, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Do you think it appropriate to add a link towards my locomat (http://www.loria.fr/~roegel/locomat.html) collection of reconstructions of mathematical tables? It contains full analyses and reconstructions of Gunter's tables.Roegel (talk) 19:05, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Querying holy orders

[edit]

the text says: He took orders, became a preacher in 1614,. Is this just sloppy writing or a new usage of the word preacher- if he took orders he would be in the Church of England and have started his career as a curate. Should , became a preacher be deleted? -- Clem Rutter (talk) 21:20, 1 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Reference to Henry Briggs

[edit]

The text says: He was mentored in mathematics by Reverend Henry Briggs

I can find no reference that Henry Briggs was ordained or had any religious training at all.

Should 'Reverend' be removed?
