== First motion convention ==

The first figure in this article is confusing. The usual convention is to label the quadrants P and T, depending on the first motion, whether inward or outward. The figure uses C and T, perhaps to indicate the local stress associated with the first motion of the outgoing wave (compression and tension). The usual convention, and the one used for other figures in this article, is to label the white quadrants P, and the black, T. Mark Brandon Yale.
