Rhyming slang

Naturally, this somewhat dubious hand motion and his rhyming name (See Cockney rhyming slang) earned his place in the hearts of 1980s schoolchildren, viz: "Don't be such a Gareth Hunt" (see also cunt).

Do you really need to use the rhyming slang bit? That really make this artcle degraded.

It is still in use, certainly amongst those of an age to remember the coffee advert. I often use the 'rhyming' phrase 'he's a bit of a Gareth.' I believe (though cannot reference this) that the name of the unpleasant character Gareth in Ricky Gervais's sitcom "The Office" is an oblique reference to this phrase. I believe the fact that his name has generated a phrase in popular slang culture does warrant a mention, even if only as a guide for future etymologists.Butcherscross (talk) 21:32, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

I disagree. I've found that the fact appears at relevant sources like Partridge - but it still doesn't merit being included in this article. Maybe it could warrant a mention at slang, but it has no place at this man's biography unless we have a reference on how this fact affected his life, work, critical commentary or perception from the public; the given references don't support that relevancy. Birthdate

I've confirmed he was born in 1942, not 1943. His real name as we know was Alan Leonard Hunt. The England & Wales Birth Index (accessible at Ancestry.co.uk) reveals no Alan L. Hunts born in the first half of 1943, but there was one born in Battersea in 1942. And the Avengers Forever website (amongst others) confirms his birthplace as Battersea. Military Prison?

Why was he put in a military prison in NZ, presumably for the offence of staying without a visa? Although the merchant marine is known as the "Merchant Navy" it is not part of the armed forces of the UK, so I doubt that is an explanation. Marchino61 (talk) 09:09, 15 April 2016 (UTC)
