1971 Trade boomerang[edit]

Prior to the start of the 1971-72 season, Chicago traded Desjardins to California for Gary Smith. However, Desjardins failed a physical exam with the new team, as his broken arm was found to have insufficiently healed. The trade has to be rescinded, and the Black Hawks reclaimed Desjardins and sent Giles Meloche to the Seals as a replacement. When Desjardins' arm was deemed okay months later, the Hawks found themselves three goalies, and used all of them in their first round sweep of Pittsburgh in the playoffs. Desjardins would be lost in the expansion draft that followed. It seems a shame that they didn't hang on to Meloche instead of Smith, but realistically he wouldn't have seen much playing time behind Esposito. WHPratt (talk) 13:29, 27 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Charlie Gardiner (ice hockey)

The name "Desjardins" translates to "the gardener." One sportswriter thought that Gerry would have a great future in Chicago, as Hall-of-Fame goalie Charlie Gardiner was part of Black Hawk history. It didn't quite work out that way! WHPratt (talk) 13:29, 27 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
