birthdate
Websites seem to disagree about whether Swanson was born in 1897 or 1899. More have 1899 as the year of birth. Since her official website says 1899, I've fixed the birth date in the article. -- Minesweeper 00:46 4 Jun 2003 (UTC)
- She says 1899 in her autobiography, and it's the date on her tombstone [1]. People on here seem to believe the 1897 date simply because it says so on IMDB, but as a regular user of (and contributor to) that site for the past 4 years I can honestly say that it's far from perfect and certainly not as reliable as people seem to think. Crisso 14:57, 31 October 2005 (UTC)
- Could there be a mention of the problem with the dates on the article so there is no confusion as to why WP chose that (the right) date. Lincher 17:32, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
Both her death certificate and her gravestone have 1899. Shouldn't that be proof enough to change the date to 1899? Hotwine8 15:59, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
- I don't see why it shouldn't. I see no reliable source cited that confirms 1897. Crisso 16:42, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
- So it should say 1899, but it was changed somehow back to 1897. See death zertifikate and grave. Also inserted a remark to look first on this discussion page. 58.10.102.228 (talk) 07:52, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
- In citing the year of Gloria's birth date on her death certificate, it is almost certain the NY Dept. of Health just asked her widower, William Dufty,
when she was born, and he just told them what she had told him. But there is absolutely no question that she was born in 1897. It was a very, very common practice for women at that time, and even past that time, to shave off a little time. Jayne Mansfield, who actually never lived to be old, was able to pull a fast one when issued a passport, which, she told friends, made her feel younger. The best example is "Valley of the Dolls" author Jacqueline Susann, who cornered Secretary of State Henry Kissinger at a party and coaxed him to change her birthday on her passport; he said there was nothing he could do. Still, the urn containing her ashes bears her birth year as 1921, as her widower Irving Mansfield said in his book, "the year she chose for herself." She was born in 1918. Accommodating his wife, Mansfield knew that even dead, Jackie would feel younger! It sounds crazy, but it's a diva thing. Of course now, it would be impossible for high-profile women to fudge about their age. (Men are not under any such pressure, lucky us!) Professor Von Pie 09:01, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
She was NOT born in 1897. All the records on ancestry.com list her as being born in 1899. She was born in 1899, because I found her on a 1913 passenger list from Ancestry.com along with her mother Addie Swanson, and they did live in Puerto Rico which this records states. A 14 year old girl has no reason to lie about her age. All of her passports state 1899 as her birth year also.

- All the above are fair arguments. In all probability the year of birth was 1899, but just b/c that year appears on her gravestone is not a guarantee, it should be borne in mind. Gravestones are not always reliable (vis-a-vis Bing Crosby and Audrey Meadows both of whose gravestones bore inaccurate years of birth (Crosby was actually born in 1903 and Meadows in 1922). Also Swanson's death certificate cited above, although it gives 1899 as year of birth also states that "approximate age" at death was 85, which would mean a year of birth of 1898! Anyway just wanted to vent a little. Rms125a@hotmail.com (talk) 00:39, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
Gay Icon Project
In my effort to merge the now-deleted list from the article Gay icon to the Gay icons category, I have added this page to the category. I engaged in this effort as a "human script", adding everyone from the list to the category, bypassing the fact-checking stage. That is what I am relying on you to do. Please check the article Gay icon and make a judgment as to whether this person or group fits the category. By distributing this task from the regular editors of one article to the regular editors hey of several articles, I believe that the task of fact-checking this information can be expedited. Thank you very much. Philwelch 22:16, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Category: Scientologist?
Just how dedicated was she as a scientologist? I walked into a scientology center in 1971, bought one book, and have been on their mailing list for the past 34 years. I ammmuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuum most definitely not a scientologist, thought their standard procedure is to list people like me as believers. I'd like to see a little proof that she was truly dedicated to scientology. Please note that I have omitted my name stamp while discussing scientology; this is on purpose!hot stuff!!!!!!!!!!
This video alleged that Swanson was audited by LRH himself and healed from cancer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AaI-NHNLPU&feature=player_embedded. 79.219.152.94 (talk) 10:27, 16 December 2014 (UTC) Wolfgang
- I guess if it was in the article it's been removed. In that case, what does "long-time member of the Lutheran church" mean? Was it "life-long"? If not, did she leave the Lutheran church at some point? --Richardson mcphillips (talk) 18:41, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
Pioneer Vegetarian?
Gloria Swanson was very important in the history of vegetarianism and the organic food movement. This should be added to the article. I'll try to find some references... JesseW 20:11, 17 July 2005 (UTC)
Bitchy vs. unpleasant
I read she could be a bitch; why use "unpleasant", it is too vague an adjective. 216.194.0.8 04:49, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
Wasn't there a woman on Strictly Come Dancing called Gloria Swanson?
Dune?
Many online articles claim that an early attempt to bring Frank Herbert's Dune to film by Alejandro Jodorowsky involved Gloria Swanson. (I figure that she would have been cast as the Bene Gesserit Mother.) Can anyone confirm this?

Corrupted paragraph
The following paragraph seems to be a combination of two unrelated paragraph fragments. Can anyone fix? "Despite reports that "dirty" words can be read on the characters' lips, Swanson claims the censors went over everything with a fine-toothed comb.[30] However, Swanson admitted that one line she was shouting at Davidson went, "You'd rip the wings off of a butterfly, you son of a bitch!" when recounting a conversation with Walsh later in life.[31] If the word rain was used in a title, they asked that it be removed. They also wanted to change Davidson's name to something else, but Swanson and Walsh refused." 70.179.90.182 (talk) 14:15, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

Hays Code
(referring to the first paragraph of the article)
How could a 1928 film challenge the Hays Code if the code was (according to wikipedia) only introduced in 1930?
12:54GMT 2.3.2010 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Najonajo (talk • contribs) 11:55, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, but the Hays code, while compiled in 1930, was not in effect until 1934 so that's just twaddle. I keep changing this reference but some precious Swanson fan keeps putting it back.```` —Preceding unsigned comment added by 165.12.252.112 (talk) 04:29, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
Wikipedia and other sources says the code was written by Joseph Breen in 1930, but not pukt into full force ntil 1934. The reference to influence by the Hays Code on Swanson's decisions regarding Sadie Thompson, makes the article highly suspect to this viewer and reader. 98.16.180.112 (talk) 01:46, 18 March 2015 (UTC)SimonJack98.16.180.112 (talk) 01:46, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
1981 Television Appearance
Didn't Gloria Swanson star with Brooke Shields and other women of varying ages (including Joan Collins) in a 1981 or 1982 television special, "Beauty at Any Age"? I remember the show but have not been able to find any reference to it.
Insider presumptions, Needs context or deletion.
While each sentence is OK, this is gibberish, meaningless. I feel like an outsider listening to an inside joke. Needs context or deletion:
quote:
"Swanson set about getting the rights to the play by having Schenck pretend to buy it in the name of United Artists, never to be used.[15] [Huh?]
Thus they were able to obtain the story rights for $60,000 instead of the original $100,000. When news broke concerning just what was intended with the play, the three authors threatened to sue.[8][Why?] [12]
However, Swanson later contacted Maugham about rights to a sequel, and he offered to grant them for $25,000. [meaningless. Why? what purpose?]
Maugham claimed Fox had asked about a sequel at the same time Swanson had bought the original story's rights. The sequel was to follow the further exploits of Sadie in Australia, but was never made.[16] [useless, meaningless, distracting out of context factoids]
"Swanson and Walsh set about writing the script,[17] and discreetly placed an ad announcing the film, thinking no one noticed, as Charles Lindbergh had just completed his historic transatlantic flight. [Why would they attempt a non-ad failure?]
However, the press picked up on it and sensationalized the story.[12] [how? why?]
United Artists received a threatening two-page telegram from the MPAA [what threat?] signed by all its members, including Fox (Walsh's studio) and Hays himself. In addition, the rest of the signors owned several thousand movie houses, and if they refused...." [why would they do that?]
I presume the above has meaning to some? If so, I feel like an outsider at a Star Trek convention. Please fix.

Relilable sourcing available for actor biographies
"The American Film Institute was founded by a 1965 presidential mandate announced in the Rose Garden of the White House by Lyndon B. Johnson—to establish a national arts organization to preserve the legacy of American film heritage, educate the next generation of filmmakers, and honor the artists and their work. Two years later, in 1967, AFI was established, supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Motion Picture Association of America and the Ford Foundation."
"Operated by the Research Department of The Broadway League, a trade association for the North American commercial theatre community." IBDB "is an online database of Broadway theatre productions and their personnel, including lengths of runs, lists of casts and creators, awards and nominations, and past box office grosses. Its research department maintains historical data on individual playhouses and productions. In addition, many reference documents, including weekly box office grosses and season-by-season statistics, are available to the public, journalists, and scholars via the website."

Gloria Swanson upgrade/clean up
- Statistics - there had been 757 editors to this article prior to clean-up.
- May 5, 2020 - Article as it existed prior to beginning of upgrade/cleanup process
- Wikified, cleaned up and sourced similar to FA and GA actor bios of Swanson's era, such as:
- Katharine Hepburn - FA as of 2012 - this one is excellent
- Marilyn Monroe - FA as of 2015 pretty good
- James Cagney - GA Cagney's is the best structure
- Cecil B. DeMille - GA 2nd best structure
- Olivia de Havilland - GA 3rd best structure
- Per WP:PRIMARY removed all citations of her autobiography "Swanson on Swanson" as a source
- Removed GF fancruft that did not seem relevant to her career or life achievements
- Citation needed tags taken care of
- Updated sourcing overall
- Further reading section: Some of the titles were used as reference material, and moved into the Bibliography section. A lot of titles on yoga, Joseph Kennedy and non-specific books on show business and architecture were removed.
- See also - Sugar Blues, the book written by Swanson's last husband, removed from "Further reading" and is linked to its own Wikipedia page.
- Removed unsourced statement: "The second-largest collection of Swanson materials is held in the family archives of Timothy A. Rooks." Repeated verbatim (unsourced) on various websites, there is no definition of what "second-largest" would be, and no verification that it ever existed. Harry Ransom Center (HRC) at UT-Austin bought most of Swanson's "artwork, audio discs, bound volumes, film, galleys, microfilm, posters, and memorabilia" prior to her death. That which was not purchased before her death, was either privately gifted to the HRC or purchased by them by 1988. Rooks was the literary agent to Swanson's final husband William Dufty, who died in 2002. The statement is word for word from Duffy's obit, but whatever he held in 2002 could now be anywhere, or no longer even exist .
