Federal court nomination

[edit]

Why was the mention of criticism by Whelan at National Review Online removed? 192.12.184.2 (talk) 16:29, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Pointing out that National Review criticizes an Obama nomination is about as useful and surprising as pointing out Huffington Post criticizing a Bush nomination. Maybe you can add something to the National Review wiki page about it but to mention it in the Liu article is undue weight. 128.2.51.144 (talk) 19:44, 21 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

How come no reference to his support for "reparations" for slavery? Is this not a controversial view for someone supposedly being groomed by the Democrats to be the first Asian on the SCOTUS?

Here is a link of Liu discussing reparations. Sounds supportie to me.

Given the rational that the National Review criticizing an Obama nominee is not "useful" or "surprising", I've removed the following paragraph because it is not useful or surprising to see that a lot of high profile Democrats, the partisan American Bar Association, and Liu's friends would support the nomination.

Liu's nomination earned support from former Independent Counsel and Whitewater prosecutor Kenneth Starr,[1] former Associate White House Counsel to President George W. Bush Richard Painter,[2] former Acting Solicitor General to President Bill Clinton, Walter Dellinger[3] and both of California's Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer,[4] as well as gaining a "unanimous well-qualified" rating from an American Bar Association committee that screens prospective judicial candidates on their competence, integrity and judicial temperament.[5] His nomination was also supported and lauded by his colleagues at UC Berkeley, including Christopher Edley, Jr. and John Yoo,[6] and the director of the conservative[7] Goldwater Institute, Clint Bolick, who praised his approachability and calm temperament.[8]

I think it is ok to put the paragraph back in so long as, for the sake of NPOV, we do include some of the substantive criticisms of Liu that caused his nomination to be opposed. Readin (talk) 17:10, 24 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Judicial Service

[edit]

The last sentence of "career" says: "Liu has never served as a Judge in his entire legal career."

This language is suspicious. I think it should either be removed or changed to something more like "Prior to his appointment to the Ninth Circuit, Liu had not served as a judge."

Opinions?

Cranialsodomy (talk) 00:17, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think its important to tell the reader that he hadn't previously been a judge. As to how it should be worded I think your suggestion is fine so long as you change appointment to nomination since he hasn't yet been appointed.Chhe (talk) 04:22, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Stalling tactics"

[edit]

This description of the reasons for the second delay is clearly not neutral as written. If you can find a quote where a figure of public significance has described them as "stalling tactics", it would be appropriate to include that. 97.123.117.18 (talk) 15:48, 9 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that it could be worded more neutrally, but I wasn't able to find yet what specific legislative action was used so that I could substitute it for the words "stalling tactics". I think its important though to inform the reader that the precedings were postponed twice followed by a third attempt to get them postponed that Leahy decided to reject. P.S. as far as the "figure of public significance" goes the ref seems to suggest that it was Senator Leahy who said that.Chhe (talk) 17:13, 9 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Easy enough to put quote marks around it then. 192.12.184.2 (talk) 14:06, 12 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Supreme Court Nomination

Nominee status

[edit]

Somebody please remember to remove the "Nominee infobox" on Dec 31, when his nomination expires. In accordance with WP:CRYSTAL, I don't want to do this right now when Senate is still in session, but as his nomination expires, it's time to do that and make changes in the article accordingly. Chinese v. Taiwanese Descent

[edit]

In this edit user Megartasm changed the early life section to say that Liu is of Taiwanese descent. This was undone in this edit by IP address 71.1.246.127. From what I've been able to tell through my investigation, Liu's parents are referred to in publications as Taiwanese, not Chinese. I have made this change and added a citation. That said, it is important to maintain WP:NPOV, so I'm interested in additional comments and references on this issue if anyone has them.
