Organizacoes Globo are failed verification of reference

[edit]

The reference added here [1] by user OceanBeach SD to sustain that Organizacoes Globo is "Latin America's largest media conglomerate and world's 4th largest only behing ABC, CBS and NBC" doesn't support those claims. In fact, it doesn't say anything about it.

It does mention Rede Globo as the world's 4th largest unrestricted television channel (literally says in Spanish "cuarto canal de televisión abierta del mundo"). But still it doesn't say anything about media giant Organizacoes Globo. I'm surprised by that addition given the fact that the reference says nothing about the added claims. Agreed, I don't see anything mentioning O Globo as being the 4th largest in the world, or that its behind the US Networks. Its possible that a comparison of circulation/coverage numbers from this and other sources could be done, that would be WP:OR since there is nothing explicitly saying such. I have a friend who works for O Globo, and I'll see if maybe she can provide me some WP:RS regarding the organization's numbers. -- nsaum75 !Dígame¡ 02:43, 23 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I did some investigating and it looks like this source was gathered from the ES Wiki article on O Globo; an honest mistake since I've often copied sources from ES wiki articles to EN wiki articles. But I guess it shows we need to always confirm that a source says what its claimed to say...especially when using them across different Wikis. ES wiki is not known for its "quality", so its not surprising this was snuck into the es wiki article and not reverted. Anyhow, I'll fix the ES wiki article. -- nsaum75 !Dígame¡ 02:49, 23 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As I said on my talk page - User talk:08OceanBeach SD#Organizacoes Globo and reference - I got the source from es:Organizações Globo and seeing as I'm not fluent in Spanish, was not able to thoroughly read the source. It was an honest mistake. I suggested he fix it at the Spanish wiki, but it seems you have already taken care of it. 08OceanBeachS.D. 03:52, 23 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
All is OK, no harm done. I figured it was an honest mistake. I've transwikied sources before and didn't realize there were shortcomings, so it happens to all of us. One of the primary reasons I don't edit much on ES or PT Wiki is because they seem to have a lower quality standard, and IPs are able to insert incorrect information without it being vetted by established users. Another big problem with the source: it was a 2001 article! So it was written a decade ago, that's outdated a lot! AlexCovarrubias ( Talk? ) 16:47, 23 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
