Is Hass a biologist?

[edit]

Could somebody come up with a source for the claim that Hans Hass is a biologist? To my knowledge, he has never graduated from any academic institution in this subject.

He is a Doctor in Zoology (which is a branch of biology)Apostolos Margaritis 09:17, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No he is not! He did a PhD in Law as far as I know - he never graduated in biology.

Scientific title

[edit]

Prof. Dr. rer. nat.(rerum naturalium) Hans Hass is son of Dr. iur. (iuris) Hans Hass a lawyer, and Meta Hass, born Brausewetter.

read short CV at http://www.poseidon.co.at/hans_hass.htm (german)

=> 1944 graduation as Dr. rer. nat. (rerum naturalium) in Zoology Dr. rer. nat. (rerum naturalium) is a scientific title

=> 1977 Hans Hass receives the title professor from University of Vienna

Lottie Hass

[edit]

I know of Hans Hass through the TV programmes about and fronted by Hans and Lotte Hass - ie his wife was just as famous. She gets barely a mention here. What gives? 81.156.125.27 (talk) 14:54, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I wondered that too. Turns out this article started out as a translation of de:Hans Hass. The German Wikipedia has a separate article de:Lotte Hass, but here on en.wikipedia Lotte Hass redirects to Hans Hass at present. I'll turn the redirect into a stub and request help with translation. Wartime activity

[edit]

The English Wikipedia arcticle states that Hass was conscripted into the Wehrmacht during the Second World War. The German Wikipedia article de:Hans Hass states that Hass was unsuitable for drafting due to a medical condition (Raynaud's syndrome). These are obviously contradictory statements, and one at least must be factually inaccurate. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.187.150.195 (talk) 17:45, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This was discussion in length in the German Wikipedia. Hass was never a member of a military group.Gio von Gryneck (talk) 13:23, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bonaire

[edit]

It is nonsense to claim Hass would have had the time and the interest to “hunt the Atlantic goliath grouper to local extinction”. In his book “Unter Korallen und Haien” (1941) Hass mentioned that the harpooned a single Atlantic goliath grouper near Lac Bay on the east coast of Bonaire – that’s all.Gio von Gryneck (talk) 09:39, 27 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The reference to the Atlantic goliath grouper is to be found in the book, "The Unnatural History of the Sea", Island Press, 2007, p. 238, by Callum Roberts, the noted British marine biologist and academic. He quotes a Hass book, Diving to Adventure (trans. from Drei Jäger auf dem Meeresgrund) to illustrate that Hass was an enthusiastic underwater hunter at that time, selling the fish locally in part to fund his expedition. This was over 75 years ago when most reef species were still reassuringly abundant. The extinction claim is the reported opinion of one scuba operator in Bonaire but, in the next sentence, Roberts himself refutes the veracity of the 'single-handed' claim. To read online the text referred to, see : https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=kPUdwlxmda0C&pg=PA237&lpg=PA237&dq=callum+roberts+hans+hass&source=bl&ots=A9YBFkD0gz&sig=rzAuYrun8HVFG7Ey5T0riJSnTb0&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiG8tWQ1_3JAhVDVBQKHT1eA70Q6AEIKTAB#v=onepage&q=callum%20roberts%20hans%20hass&f=false . The quote in the wiki is not incorrect per se but because it is incomplete, it misrepresents the opinion of Callum Roberts. Therefore, I have amended the reference. For what reason is an untrue claim made by a single person reproduced publicly? A noted marine biologist and academic should not do such a thing. He exposes himself to the accusation of being unserious and unscientific. Gio von Gryneck (talk) 19:12, 22 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
