Cause of death: cancer or not?

The obituary in The Independent by Chris Salewicz from 28 July 2008, already used as a reference in the article, says that he fully recovered from cancer and died from crack. The obituary in The Guardian does not state the cause of death, but mentions bad health due to chemotherapy for throat cancer and bad health due to drug abuse. I could not access the New York Times obituary used as a reference for cancer as cause of death here, but caught a glimpse of a sentence quoting his partner who said that the cause was pending.
