Article creation[edit]

This article was written as part of an assignment for a collegiate course, "Sports, Religion, and Society". Research and writing was performed by 4 college students. This was the first article created by any of the individuals participating. Feedback on the article and its subject matter is appreciated. Welcome to Wikipedia and thank you for your contribution. However, I have noticed various issues with this article that I have had to fix. First of all, the timeline looks like an almost entire copyright violation of this page. I also removed the quotes section because having an entire section dedicated to quotes is unencyclopedic. As for the section titled "Organizations Supporting Homosexuality in Sports", it seems to do only one thing, to promote the Atlanta Gay Sports Alliance. Lastly, I also removed or tagged various dubious and unreferenced statements.

Edits on Homosexuality in Modern Sports for Alexis[edit]

-The first sentence in the article is very confusing and only encompasses schools, keep it broad.

-Name some of the homosexual sporting organizations

-Check spelling and grammar

-The study by Osborne and Wagner, Wilkinson and Pearson, should be cited

-Explain why sports like tennis are more accepting

-If you are going to do the legal cases, you should have a wider variety

The very first sentence is a great opening, but remove the phrase "and arguable worse than some" because that shows your bias as the writer. In the next sentence, don't refer to the athletes as "several notable outspoken homosexual athletes" because again, you're showing bias as the author. It's not up to you to prove their notability or outspokenness. You're also missing commas throughout the page. For example the next sentence in your lead starts out with "Since then many homosexual..." but you need to inset a comma after "then" making it "Since then, many..." Now, lets's discuss the last two sentences of the lead, "While, overall the trend is towards open acceptance, different sports vary widely and homosexual athletes still face many challenges. International sports organisations have come under scrutiny for holding competitions in countries where LGBT equality is out of step with their own policies." First, "organizations" is spelled incorrectly, and second, these sentences sound argumentative, as if it's the start of an essay when there is nothing to argue on this page. It's not meant to show this type of bias. I think that the rest of the page is alright, but it still needs a few minor changes. You should check the grammar and spelling for the rest of the page and add more citations for the studies you mention. There are tons of citations on this article and checking them will only make this article more reliable. Everything else in this article looks good and the grammar is good. -James R. West[reply]

Some of the more recent cases of homosexual professional athletes are Michael Sam in the NFL and Jason Williams in the NBA. Both had controversial professional careers after coming out and Michael Sam flat out says that teams did not sign him because he was gay. Rename[edit]

The article is currently called "Homosexuality in modern sports." I don't feel strongly about the word "modern." However, the word "homosexuality" is weird here. People are not having sex while playing sports; rather, they are individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual and who also play sports. A title like "Lesbian, gay, and bisexual people in sports" would better reflect this. For comparison, there is already a separate article "Transgender people in sports" (to where "Transgender athletes" redirects). I don't mean to imply that "LGB" material always ought to be covered in separate articles from "T" material. These are, however, different identities/experiences, and if they are going to be covered together in the same article then it's important to meaningfully distinguish them. As I don't see that this LGB article yet covers any transgender content, and as there is already a separate transgender article, it may make sense to keep them separate. Currently it's confusing because the title is "Homosexuality in modern sports" and the first sentence of the lede refers to "LGBTQ+". - Tuckerlieberman (talk) 02:15, 22 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Additions to article[edit]

I plan on making some changes to the article in the next week or so. First, I plan to alter the lead so it clearly and concisely summarizes the article's content. I also plan on adding a section called "Notable LGBTQ+ Athletes," which will highlight some of the most notable LGBTQ+ athletes in sports history and provide information on their successes both as an athlete and a person. I feel this section will provide relevant information to the article while at the same time balancing the article, as currently "Homophobia in sports culture" seems to dominate the content provided. Additionally, currently, the article is missing a great deal of citations, so I plan on filling in around 15-20 citations to satisfy Wikipedia's mission of including verifiable and reliable sources. Content will also be added to the "Homophobia in sports culture" section in an attempt to continue to balance the article with relevant, current, and reliable information. Finally, a general copy editing for spelling and grammatical errors will be conducted. This link will take you to my annotated bibliography within my sandbox.
