Bar closed since 2013, according to Michel Houellebecq

[edit]

In the 2015 novel "Submission" by Michel Houellebecq, the bar of the Hotel Métropole in Brussels is quoted to have been closed for ever on the evening of march 30th, 2013. The protagonist of the novel, François, deeply regrets this "loss of an Art-déco masterpiece", which makes him feel the decay of the whole European culture. Is there any true background for this statement? The hotel's internet page describes the bar having been "re-decorated in 2011", which arouses the question how substancial this refurbishment might have been.
