The result of the debate was NO CONSENSUS to move article at this time. -GTBacchus(talk) 16:46, 21 December 2006 (UTC) Hyde, Greater ManchesterHyde — as will be seen from the links to Hyde most refer to the place in Gtr Manchester that is better known than all others[reply]
Copied from WP:RM. I'm not the originator of this request, Saga City submitted the request, but did not add templates to talk page. Bobblehead 23:42, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose - Too many Hydes and this one isn't so far ahead of the rest. Leave as is. -- Beardo 02:07, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - There are a large amount of Hydes on the disambiguation and Hyde can mean primarily one thing or another to too many people. Regan123 17:09, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per above: not a primary topic. - Evv 20:40, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - too many other Hydes to assume a searcher would be looking for this Hyde rather than one of the others. I have reverted the move of Hyde to return to the staus quo pending the resolution of this RM. BlueValour 23:25, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strongly oppose most moves of British cities with unambiguous titles to ambiguous titles. Voretustalk 15:19, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak oppose because I don't know if there are any more cities, and per Cork. With this many names, it should be a disambig (and is this the most common city by the name?) Patstuarttalk|edits 15:54, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - same argument as everyone else! Waggers 09:58, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Shipman Surgery citation[edit]

Feels a bit odd that someone felt that the reference to Harold Shipman's surgery being in Hyde, needed a citation. But there's now one there non-the-less. Bods (talk) 13:56, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Static image[edit]

I'm undecided as to whether to use the current Image:Hyde Town Hall.jpg or else swap it for Image:Hyde from Werneth Low.jpg in the infobox. Do we have any preference? --Jza84 |  Talk  16:32, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

For me, the trees obscure the town hall too much. While the view from Werneth Low doesn't leap out as saying "yes, that's obviously Hyde", I think it's preferable as to a half hidden building. Nev1 (talk) 16:38, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
My thoughts entirely, on reflection! OK, I'll make the swap. --Jza84 |  Talk  17:03, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notable People[edit]

There are a couple of anomalies in the Notable People section. Davy Jones (The Monkees) was not from Hyde. He was from Gorton. Also, is the list supposed to be people born in Hyde or people who have lived in Hyde? LS Lowry lived in Mottram (classed as Hyde) but wasn't born in Hyde, so if we include him shouldn't we also include the following former residents of the area - Pat Phoenix (Hollingworth), Kathy Staff (Mottram), Tommy Docherty (at one time Broadbottom) and all the other Corrie actors who live in Broadbottom today? Beanoboggs (talk) 12:59, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good point. I've added a refs tag to the section and an opening para. I'll try and find some refs next. --Oscarthecat (talk) 13:07, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I like the idea of adding refs. That'll help. Davy Jones was born in Manchester and lived in Gorton and all his biographical details refer to him being born in Manchester. I've never seen anything that says he was from Hyde. Unfortunately, if we add those who have lived in Hyde but not born in Hyde we'll also need to include the negatives (Hindley, Brady, Shipman). Obviously, none of us want to see them publicised as Hydonians but we do need to be consistent. Personally, I think we should just show Hyde born people, or at least those whose parents were living in the town when they were born (most births since 1969 would be at Tameside/Ashton Hospital, prior to that it'd be the Aspland). Beanoboggs (talk) 13:15, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. I've removed Davy, as no evidence suggests he was a Hyde lad. Whether just to include Hyde-born folk or also include those who lived for many years in Hyde or made a significant contribution to the town's history, I really don't know which way to go. By including the "quote" param in the ref, I'm managing to highlight whether they were born/lived etc for now, useful if we have a cull later on. --Oscarthecat (talk) 13:39, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
