Neighborhood v. Community Area

[edit]

Chicago's community areas were largely defined in the 1920s and remain important because a variety of census and other information continues to be reported on the basis of this division of the city.

Unlike some of the city's community areas, Hyde Park continues to be a neighborhood and is (in my opinion) primarily notable because it is a neighborhood, not a community area. (Look at virtually any newspaper article concerning Hyde Park to confirm.)

For this reason, it strikes me as peculiar to highlight the fact that hyde park is a community area in the introduction. Rather than do away with the reference altogether, I've modified the intro so that HP is described as both neighborhood and community area.

Hyde Park Art Center

[edit]

The first paragraph states that Hyde Park is home to the UofC, the Hyde Park Art Center, the Museum of Science and Industry, the Oriental Institute and the Renaissance Society. First, The Art Center is in Kenwood, not Hyde Park; this should be corrected. Second, the paragraph ignores the other institutions of higher learning that also reside in Hyde Park; they should be included. --Pbh444 (talk) 02:19, 3 June 2010 (UTC) pbh444[reply]

Notable Residents

[edit]

strikes me as an odd collection. Because the University of Chicago is located in Hyde Park, numerous Nobel Lauriets live(d) in the neighborhood. Why list some but not others. And why list other prominent academics (like Eugene Fama) at all? Unless someone objects, I'm going to cull the list. --Sjsilverman (talk) 18:45, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Space after comma

[edit]

A space after the comma is needed in the article title. I tried to do it myself, but the proposed move wasn't recognized. SMP0328. (talk) 20:05, 6 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Motto

[edit]

Do they still say "No place to hide, no place to park" about the neighborhood? 68.164.149.64 (talk) 05:46, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

UofC Central Campus boundaries

[edit]

@78-Yellowcat, that boundary definition (University vs. Kimbark) for central campus is a bit dicey - if we restrict it to University, then that would exclude the Booth school (which is mentioned in the paragraph). Seems to me that 59th-57th and Ellis-University are unquestionably part of the core, but after that it gets less clear. BubbaJoe123456 (talk) 15:33, 5 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like the University of Chicago itself defines the boundary of Central Campus to exclude the Booth school, see: https://safety-security.uchicago.edu/news-alerts/2022-12-20-downtown-campus-connector Editchecker123 (talk) 18:13, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
