Fair use rationale for Image:Compton-Burnett.jpg[edit]

Image:Compton-Burnett.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. IPA skewed towards rhotic?[edit]

It seems the IPA template is skewed towards rhotic. Trying to render 'Burnett' in ICB's non-rhotic British pronunciation, I'm finding it impossible to avoid an 'r' after the 'ɜ'. Compare |b|ɜ:|n|ɪ|t| with how it comes out: /ˌkʌmptənˈbɜːnɪt/. (This must be why 'Compton' was included alone in the first place.) I'll have to discard the template leaving just the IPA letters. Emphasis[edit]

The debate about her family’s class background seems to be excessively detailed for its limited notability. Meanwhile you say that she successfully managed the considerable family fortune after her mother's death. We don’t hear where this fortune came from. Valetude (talk) 19:33, 29 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The relevance of the family class background, it seems to me, lies primarily in the subject matter of Compton-Burnett's works and the manner in which she was pleased to present herself; as the article gives, it was assumed both by her acquaintances and the reading public that she was of a gentry background and thus held special insight into the lives of the people of whom she wrote, which was not in fact the case. The 'considerable family fortune' was the result of Dr James Compton-Burnett's medical work (he being author also of twenty-six medical books); the Rees family were also of the well-off (upper-)middle-class, Katherine Compton-Burnett's father Rowland Rees being a civil engineer and surveyor, architect (responsible for the construction of all the 'best houses' of Dover from 1850-1860 per Spurling), J.P. and alderman as well as Mayor of Dover. Details of this family money are given in Spurling (vol. 1, p. 207); it constituted both parents' estates and largely consisted of tenanted property which required management. Dame[edit]

Bmcln1. I'm afraid you don't give examples. To confirm my words, it is enough to follow the link to the Dames Commander of the Order of the British Empire category at the bottom of the article. In all articles about these Dames, the beginning goes exactly with " Dame...", except for those cases when the person has a higher title: for example, the Baroness; or this person received this award without being a citizen of the United Kingdom (for example, Angelina Jolie received DCMG, which gives the same title of a Dame, but she does not have British citizenship and does not use the title). We don't have a consensus, and I think it's like an edit warring right now.--Peter Philim (talk) 11:42, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
